That's what I loved most about ADB's word bearer's books. They aren't all raving lunatics, some of them know the pantheon for what they are but it's far too late for them to turn back. Little by little their humanity and compassion is chipped away leaving them the servants of malevolent gods believing that only worship of them will save humanity. They could have been of the Imperium's most zealous legions had the Emperor not shamed them and glassed their perfect city in from of them. Their purpose had been shattered right in front of them and in their desperation they turned to beings that seek to damn the Imperium they once fought so hard to protect.

This is what I love about the Word Bearers. They don't inflict torment just to get a sadistic kick out of it, though I'm sure they get that too. There's an actual purpose behind it. And that makes it so much more horrific. There's something almost paradoxically scientific in how inflicting pain causes a reaction in the Warp which can then be coaxed into achieving a desired result in the material realm. There are rituals, true names, amulets and tomes of forbidden knowledge. It's primitive superstition made reality. Which is so much more fascinating than the sterile Imperial dogma of "Psykers act as conduits to channel the energies of the Warp".

Lorgar meanwhile is one of the most human things to ever live, a Demi-God, he scratches the surface of divinity but he doesn’t quite reach it, that space in between being human and being divine is filled by Chaos, and Lorgar’s was like an abyss.

Meh. Lots of Primarchs weren't good fighters or had other passions besides war. Perturabo wanted to be more of an engineer and architect than a general. Guilliman explicitly planned for his Legion to retire to civil service. And it can be argued that Guilliman wasn't a good melee fighter either, but he's arguably the most influential in the modern Imperium, just because he was _really really_ good at logistics and governing. His sons have the advantage of having the least dramatic and ordinary "childhood" that any son could ask for. In a way, it's proper that Guilliman was Lorgar's archrival, they're both men of words, it's just that Guilliman was far more concerned with the material universe and more practical forms of scholarship. And of the two, I'd argue Guilliman left the more worthwhile legacy. That's kind of the point. The Primarchs are just more than operators or soldiers. They're leaders of men and brilliantly creative. The best melee fighter of the bunch got a lobotomy that made the other Primarchs look upon him with a mixture of pity and contempt. Angron's greatest gift was never his ability to fight, since his novel implies he had empathic powers and the ability to take away other people's pain. That was robbed from him. In an alternate timeline Angron would've probably be as well-loved as Vulkan or Sanguinius.

Absolutely beautifully done Johnathan Keeble! Lorgar is a perfect character for artists with real potential.
Gotta be honest, I always felt bad for Lorgar before his fall..and even after. Maybe, it's a because I am a spiritual person, but his story and downfall was always a tragic as Magnus. Plus, I think he was right about the Emperor. The Emperor is a god. Maybe not on the same level as the ruinous powers, but a god nonetheless. The Emperor claims not to be a god, that there was no such thing as the supernatural, or gods, etc. But all that? It was lie. The Emperor is a very powerful manifestation of the supernatural, from his physique, to his intellect, to his charisma. For crying out loud, he could change his shape and when he would reveal him form it was often a titan of a man in golden, gleaming, and ornate armor. There's also hints that he may have in fact influenced the religions of Earth before it was Terra. Perhaps he tried to unite the world under a religion and it didn't work so he tried to drastically over-correct. Heck, he is still trying to steer Humanity like a god, but even more directly. He wanted to be the example that all humans could strive and look too. Couple that with his reality-bending powers, he is a living god of humanity. But the Imperial Truth was always a blatant lie, because the Warp/The Realm Of Souls had already existed eons before him. His existence and powers came directly from it. There already existed another layer of reality full of both wonder and danger. Instead of properly trying to warn humanity about it, it's danger, and how it could harness, changed, and made into a better place...he tried to cover up it's existence entirely. Often violently. He thought he could starve out the Chaos Gods via denying and abolishing faith. This was incredibly foolish because it is not faith that powers the Chaos Gods, but the extreme (often negative emotions) that came with sapient existence. He could've used the faith and hope people had in him, and channeled it even further. Yes, there is always the dangers to fanatical faith and zealous dogmatism, no doubt. There are things to criticize about how and when religion and faith is rampantly abused. But to deny that the supernatural and gods exist when it's often demonstrably (atleast in 40k) very real? Did the Emperor think he could cover that up forever? Did he think he would one day reveal that the Imperial Truth was a farce and people would still have faith in him or his system? That many wouldn't feel betrayed by this? Lorgar saw what was blatantly obvious about the Emperor, he was/is a god. What humanity should aspire to be. He thought his father was the pinnacle of benevolence, wisdom, and brilliance. Something that was innate in all of mankind despite their follies and flaws. Instead he was spurned by the one he considered to be his creator and lord. Not only was he spurned, it was done so with needless cruelty and loss of innocents who did nothing wrong but worship the Emperor, love him, and find meaning in their lives thanks to him. It's no wonder Lorgar turned to Chaos. It doesn't excuse the Primarch's own atrocities, true. Yet it's completely understandable how and why he fell. It's tragic.

Just call the Big E Xerxes, but don't call him a God. in all seriousness though I think his main thoughts behind there are no gods are as follows: a. if he can spread the imperial truth of science over gods then people would not feed the ruinous powers with their devotion, b. he didn't want to be worshipped as a god, for this reason, it would in turn feed his power and his ego and push him to become more like chaos which he didn't want. He wanted mankind united under a signal banner in the goal to make mankind thrive. He hated Xenos because the eldar could "see the future" and saw mankind feeding chaos, and wanted to wipe mankind out. the eldar looked down on everyone in the galaxy as well, as beneath them, in turn making them no better than chaos to the emperor, birthing slannesh probably didn't help either. He felt that ignorance could be used as a shield against chaos, but in turn, helped chaos subvert people to their cause.

Lorgar was one of the brothers that Magnus was fairly close with, so I can picture it in my mind that Magnus is listening to Lorgar speak and is questioning that madness and pain which has taken hold of his brother. How he has fallen so completely into the hands of the ruinous powers, there is nothing he can do, even if he tried. The man before him truly isn’t his brother anymore, but a zealot gone mad because of the rejection of his faith, faith to a being that he saw not only as his father, but as a true god.

If you’ve ever seen a family member get inducted in a cult you can probably relate. But maybe a little different because Magnus knew about Chaos and used it on a few occasions even before the Heresy.
Magnus: Bro, I just sat down! Who the fuck starts a conversation like that?
I love the smell of Ruinstorm in the morning.
Is it weird that out of all the Primarchs that Lorgar probably scares me the most? Most of the Primarch are scary simply because their massive guys in power armor who can turn me into a literal stain with barely a thought. Kurze is higher on the scary list than most because he'll make you suffer unimaginable pain via torture before you die. The Daemon Primarch's are *even higher* because they could grab your immortal soul and "play" with it. But Lorgar would probably send the entire galaxy into the warp, have Daemons eating the souls of literally *every* living being and as the everything becomes a swirling mass of pure chaotic madness he'd give a satisfied smile thinking he's done something good.

The ADB Chaos material is so good, I wish they’d focus on that over anything else. If more people heard it I believe the game itself would grow much faster than it has. I’ve always thought the Ultra Marines, Imperial Fists, even the Space Wolves were the most boring of all the material. Horus and his legion as well. I prefer characters who are in control and their chosen direction sets the pace and tone of the rest. You have a character as titular as Horus who was initially his fathers first son and showed all the childish jealousy when finding his brothers due to the focus they’d steal from him. So, as what amounts to a minor chaos god doggedly pursues recognition from the emperor like a lap dog… Up until he is warp juiced by a weak delusional legion like the Wordbearers and those idiotic pseudo-gods who with all that power can’t accomplish shit. Then you have his masterful decision (retcon I guess) to basically invite the emperor aboard for a chat as he’s about to win…. Meanwhile the “god emperor” can see the future so well yet the Haunter and the Angel both knew about the future outcomes but he didn’t. They claim the emperor only discovered his plan over a game of regicide but again other characters had known for a century plus what would unfold. What was his grand plan?! Being invited aboard by Horus lololol. This is sort of what I mean and don’t get me started on the plot armor of a select few or basically the entirety of anything with “wolf” in the name. They have an amazing universe with incredible potential but they waste it by focusing on the most boring aspects of it.

Always liked his son Argel Tal more, but hot dang if Lorgar wasn't technically right...he just never thought to impact the warp in a different way. In the backwoods theology of 40k where the created create the Divine, he really could have focused in on that and turned the warp into a tool and mirrored deathworld to house the souls of living beings, rather than falling to temptations and peer pressure Faith is a necessary component of humanity. In the end everyone devotes themselves unto something finding their fulfillment in it. Those who don't see it are true slaves to it. Keeble is so unbelievably good. Betrayer should have won awards for the performance.
I think Lorgar is the scariest Primarch because of his insane need for faith that he would serve objectively evil gods as long they were "gods" In his own mind faith cant be evil. Its like if you wanted to be an architect and your dad forced you to be a business man and then a satanist said hey Lorgar you can be my architect but the only mortar you can use is the blood of tortured children. To me Lorgar represents the danger of repression and someone coming along and offering you a taste of something you dont even understand like a child being introduced to videogames or candy. I think to Lorgar the idea of building a faith and serving higher powers is like a drug.
@giacomoromano8842
2 жыл бұрын
This is a good point of view, but i don't think that Lorgar just "need" a religion to be happy, and that he could discern between religions and see which one was right and wrong. On the world where he grew, he had visions of the emperor and understood for himself how the watered chaos worship of the planet was inflicting damage and suffering on the people, so he created a better, forgiving and embracing religion through his vision of the Emperor. What brought him towards the chaos gods was the terrifying realisation that his life, belief and all he cared more in the world was a delusion, a trauma caused by the emperor itself. At that point, he was just desperate and in need of something to cling on. So yes, when he became a chaos worshipper, he needed any religion that "existed" at all, but he wasn't always like this.

The irony is that Lorgar was happy enough to commit genocide on the Emperor's orders, because he believed the Emperor to be a god. By going out of his way to declare this not to be the case, the Emperor didn't just put Lorgar in a place where he was looking for genuine divine inspiration, he also, in Lorgar's eyes, declared himself to have no just authority over him. The zealotry of the Word Bearers was a problem which needed to be handled, but the Emperor handled it in about the worst possible way he could have done, with neither nuance nor foresight.
@johnisaacfelipe6357

@@stephenwood6663 I do agree with you but a slight cavaet is that Lorgar was unique amongst the primarchs in that he didn't want to be a general prosecuting a war against other humans. He talked about this with Kor Phaeron where he shows that he detested warfare and bloodshed in equal measure and lamented how the universe had no place for a good philosopher or scholar. He hated bloodshed and cruelty and he had managed to convert one of the most heartless legions (imperial heralds) into one that favors diplomacy, kindness, and peace. (imagine an entire legion of lamenters) Then the censure happened, and Lorgar revived the bloody fatalistic nature of his legion and millions suffered.

It boggles my mind how terribly mismanaged their IP has been. I agree, the potential is beyond staggering. Just look at how AWFUL they've done licensing their content for game development. Out of the hundreds of GW based games, theres like 4 or 5 games that are actually worth playing or paying for. They need to join the 21st century and get their heads of of their asses, as you say. I think a large part of it has to do with them being based in the UK. If they had developed some stronger relationships with more high-talent US-based media companies, perhaps they would be able to put out some licensed content that's worth a damn. As for now, I stick to the Audiobooks and the tabletop itself. It's quite telling when fan-based or community-driven content does a better job at capturing the essence of the lore than their own stuff
