Loreena McKennitt - Greensleeves

Музыка

Video that goes with the song "Greensleeeves" sung by Loreena McKennitt. Enjoy and please subscribe! :)
Alas my love you do me wrong
To cast me off discourteously;
And I have loved you oh so long
Delighting in your company.
Greensleeves was my delight,
Greensleeves my heart of gold
Greensleeves was my heart of joy
And who but my Lady Greensleeves.
I have been ready at your hand
To grant whatever thou would'st crave;
I have waged both life and land
Your love and goodwill for to have.
Greensleeves was my delight,
Greensleeves was my heart of gold
Greensleeves was my heart of joy
And who but my Lady Greensleeves.
Thy petticoat of sendle white
With gold embroidered gorgeously;
Thy petticoat of silk and white
And these I bought thee gladly.
Greensleeves was my delight,
Greensleeves my heart of gold
Greensleeves was my heart of joy
And who but my Lady Greensleeves.

    My mother passed away suddenly this past August four days before her 56th wedding anniversary. She had such a beautiful singing voice and used to sing this as a lullaby to myself and my younger brother and sister. I remember her with a smile to this song and recently played it for my father, who immediately teared up. I went to stop the music and he asked me not to. He said it was like a message from Mum and a great comfort to him. God bless the mourners 💔

    I fell in love with this song and Loreena McKennit in 1997 when I randomly heard her in a shop for musical instruments. And I never fell out of this love. Meanwhile, I have listened to many versions of this song, but hers and the duet of Tim Foust and Peter Holland are my favorite ones.

Greensleeves was my delight, Greensleeves was my heart of gold Greensleeves was my heart of joy And who but my Lady Greensleeves. Original: Alas, my love, you do me wrong, To cast me off discourteously. For I have loved you well and long, Delighting in your company. Chorus: Greensleeves was all my joy Greensleeves was my delight, Greensleeves was my heart of gold, And who but my lady greensleeves. Your vows you’ve broken, like my heart, Oh, why did you so enrapture me? Now I remain in a world apart But my heart remains in captivity. Chorus I have been ready at your hand, To grant whatever you would crave, I have both wagered life and land, Your love and good-will for to have. Chorus If you intend thus to disdain, It does the more enrapture me, And even so, I still remain A lover in captivity. Chorus My men were clothed all in green, And they did ever wait on thee; All this was gallant to be seen, And yet thou wouldst not love me. Chorus Thou couldst desire no earthly thing, but still thou hadst it readily. Thy music still to play and sing; And yet thou wouldst not love me. Chorus Well, I will pray to God on high, that thou my constancy mayst see, And that yet once before I die, Thou wilt vouchsafe to love me. Chorus Ah, Greensleeves, now farewell, adieu, To God I pray to prosper thee, For I am still thy lover true, Come once again and love me.

    I think the album cover says that they were playing around during a break on a recording session and took turns to sing various songs how Leonard Cohen(?) might sing them. Loreena McKennitt sang Greensleeves as he might sing it. It was so good that they put it on the album.

    JMB JMB It‘s like Tom Waits would do it, not like Leonard Cohen. If you know this you can hear what they mean.

Perhaps Greensleeves was written by King Henry VIII, (for there is mention this immortal song has Irish origins), but there is no doubt he certainly sang it and meant it in his madness for the Lady Anne Boleyn. To hear such a deeply sensitive rendition by our ethereal muse Loreena, is to hear the unbearable and haunting pain of unrequited love. King Henry's sexual prowess was legendary as was his charm, striking looks (before he acquired syphilis), and towering passion whether in love or rage. To have such a powerful king on his knees for a lady-in- waiting to his queen in a glittering court of silks, gold, and intrigue is beyond the mere humiliation of thwarted desire. It is drama and passion played out to the highest degree. And Loreena captured the hallowed breath of it.

    Why don't you do some research and find out if you're so genuinely interested? It's not Irish and it has nothing whatsoever to do with Henry ... who was butt ugly by the way. You could research that as well. Tudorian photoshop.

    I did do some research (as I should have done in the first place, and not rely on unsubstantiated websites) So, according to Wikipedia, Greensleeves seems to have had Spanish (Andulasian origins), and I definitely stand corrected. It says Greensleeves probably didn't reach the English court until after Henry's death in the Elizabethan age. Even as I have read on some sites this song had Irish origins, and for all the romance of Henry singing this haunting tune to his ladylove, these historical venues seem quite false, and I appreciate you making dig deeper for the truth.I can now believe this idea of Henry and Greensleeves was created out of the legends of his court and, of course, one of the passionate, most visible love affairs of all time. And as we know, our human desire for love's ardor will have us believe almost anything, and have great literature and song come of it.Henry was not butt ugly in his youth, but quite dashing and extremely charismatic as the records prove-written, painted, and otherwise. The highly honored historian Simon Schama, (who spent much of his life obsessing over this infamous king), referred to Henry in his BBC Biography on the King and his eight wives-(check it out on KZread here), "the 18 year old...was a slim, beautiful, elegant, musical, poetical, reasonable, charming, sweet-tempered young man who married for love. How does he turn into the Henry who is the horror, the Henry who is the tyrant, who, in short, was Henry." Time, intrigue, power, corruption, and 15th C. medicine did their work on Henry, and most definitely turned Henry into a mentally and physically wounded butt ugly megalomaniac. But they was a time-as with all of us-when he was beautiful in face and spirit.

    A little late with my reply but this was actually the first take of the tune in which she wasn't really trying to complete the words but only to pace through the song on her first go. The producer thought it seemed more genuine after she tried other versions. That could add to the pauses because there was no intent to really sing it out. You'll notice in her abrupt 'heart of joy' versions where she basically just says the words at the end of the line.
