    So I bought this last week based on your run through and we love it! Most importantly of all my main gaming partner (wife) really likes it. 33 AMAZON moms liked this game also and they were not wrong. My wife Jenny is not a gamer but when I give time to the things she likes then she spends time with the things I like. In her own words LOWd is fun! Lots of options with out being overwhelming. No over analysing every move. Very balanced even for 2 players. Provides different ways to score a win. Easy to learn and jump right in.

    Great video!! The best and simplest explanation of the rules and gameplay I've found :) Played this game for the first time tonight and I really really like it! And I agree I would make more sense if the half moon coins were worth four gold. (Btw, sorry for my bad English :)

    Hi Richard, You state at 34:07 that you get 2 points for very dollar leftover. The rules state that it is 1 point for every 2 dollars remaining (rounded down). -Mike

    Another great runthrough, we usually take out the manditory quests cause they do suck a lot. No one likes them and the game is basically the same without them.

    Blast from the past this video! A couple of years ago I was convinced to play this by work friends. I was winning slightly, but a massive take that card going into the last round completely destroyed me. It was really upsetting.

    I have had chance to give this a couple of plays with 4 now. I am struggling a little because I get a dreadful "Am I just playing Bingo" feeling creeping up on me. I feel as a game that it is missing one dimension, perhaps just an extra mechanic to give the control of buildings or placement take on another angle. Perhaps if you had to place the resource tokens for soldiers etc, back into income generating locations over the long term, so not just a case of placing your three agents each turn. I wanted to like it more because of the theme and potential intrigue but we ended up not really caring too much what other players were after. A shame really.. Must give it one last try with the expansion to see if I can shake that Bingo hall cry of "House" whenever I filled a quest card.

    Hello Rahdo and Paulo... I realise this has been a long time and it's a bit of a persnickety thing but anyway, here goes... 14:10 - "you do get something out of [a mandatory quest] anyway" - well... not quite, because in this instance you gave up 3 points worth of cubes to score 2 points, so all in all you lost a point when you completed it! When you recorded this video, did you envisage people would still be enjoying it 6 years later? :)

    at about 8:15-ish, Jen gets 4 coins but you give her a crescent, which is 5 coins, not 4; not a major mishap but needs to be pointed out.

  • @rahdo

    @rahdo

    +void_Presence we've always thought it was dumb that the crescents are 5, so we treat them as 4 because it makes more sense. the expansion meant we had to stop doing that though :(

    I'm curious how you feel the game has held up over the years, Richard. I initially had a very high opinion of it as well, but found over the eyars that I don't feel as strongly about it. It just seems like, skill relatively equal, whoever gets luckiest drawing the quests that match his lord wins the game. I've yet to see someone lose who didn't have the most matching quests unless it was the building lord. The expansions have helped with this a little. Just curious if your opinion has changed at all.

    TheGreatHamEl well we haven't played it for probably over a year now, but you have to understand, that's in large part because we're *constantly* playing new games, and we rarely get to go back and revist ones we love. i've never even gotten to try the skullport expansion, even though I've had that since it came out! would like to revisit it though, because we really loved it. i got a lot of use out of it playing with co-workers at lunch, and it's been great for novice gamers too, as it is a great gateway (one of the greatest gateways actually)

  • @EclecticCamel

    @EclecticCamel

    I definitely agree with it being a great gateway, though I found you had to sorta emphasize the theme a bit so it wasn't just passing around colored cubes. I really should get the meeples that look like adventurers. Thanks for the response. :)

    I think the game is just alright. I don't feel it stands out in any aspect whatsoever, but playing it has just enough of a "fun factor" to not completely stink. I am not a fan of Compounded and I wonder if Lords of Waterdeep is its spiritual inspiration. I find LoW to have a bit of a runaway leader issue just as Compounded does. Also, rather than gathering elements to place on compounds, we're gathering adventurers to allocate to quests. The game scores in spurts and I find that if someone gets ahead far enough, it's terribly difficult to catch up. You can focus on Intrigue cards, hoping to get the annoying mandatory quests, but that can take away your agents who could be helping with finishing quests. A nice game, if not a bit underwhelming.

  • @RottenMechGaming

    Totally agree with you on this. I sort of feel the game is a bit like Bingo, filling up quest cards and wanted more from it.

    Yep. Perhaps if I were new to Euro games or the worker placement mechanism, I'd find it to be a very compelling game, but as it stands, it's a bit on the bland side for me. What I do like is going to the harbor. Having a second chance to use your agents for a last placement is neat and makes using Intrigue cards more... intriguing? :)

    Random Question: Since you are a game designer, why on earth would the expansion for this game contain a grey faction? It has to be the least fun colour ever, and the game board is basically grey so they dont stand out at all. I would even recommend a pink faction since a lot of females play board games more and its even becoming a unisex colour because of fashion. I just cant figure out the psychology behind their decision, unless grey paint is cheaper than any other colour, thus saving them money.

    Can't see the attraction of this game really. You go around repetitively collecting cubes & then fulfil 'quests' simply by paying the right cubes? Def not one for me.

    Is it possible to limit players to playing one mandatory quest only? Also what are your thoughts on this game being like bingo. In a way any worker placement is like bingo: place worker - hope for good return.
