    I thought Lords of the Sith was interesting, despite the fact that we know the Emperor and Vader will survive. I never thought I would find the Twi'leks interesting, but Paul Kemp wrote a compelling story of their struggle against the Empire.

    The problem with the Legends EU was it had become a bloated mess with no consistent continuity. That said there are still lots of great stories within it that our current story tellers at the helm are pulling from. Just (so far) in a more organized manner. I enjoyed Lords of the Sith because it helped give Vader a much needed retcon and revamp, and shows why he's second only to Palpatine, and why these two are the culmination of millennia of Sith knowledge and power.

    I guess a shorter way to put it would be, this book is a little gift to those of us who always wanted to see Vader wreck some shit like we always thought he could. If you read it with that mindset, you'll have a good time.

    its really hard to actually match the quality of the Thrawn Trilogy considering that had huge hurdles to jump but also a complete absence of SW out there on the marketplace for fans to purchase. Now we're spoiled with the amount of SW material to digest in animation, books, comics, games, and its hard to match that.

    Amazing novel! I loved it from the beginning to the end. I loved the flashbacks from the past that Darth Vader had! Also I loved the new characters Paul S Kemp intruduced to us. Isval became one of my favourite characters, because of her ambition to fight and kill Darth Vader and Sidious. All the things she'd been through in the past, how she escaped as a slave and later how she rescues slaves and kills imperial officers. They ending was very sad and tough for me, especially the moment when Isval sacrificed herself so Cham, Goll and the others can escape. Her last words to Cham are so heartbreaking and finally confessing the love, because she knows everything comes to its end. Cham said to her: "What are you doing? Get down, Isval!" And she says: "I'm thinking through an exit. I love you, Cham. Now get out of here!". So sad!!! How Cham didnt want to leave her even though she told him to go and then Goll forced him to go. How she was brave and fearless to the end, and tried to fight Vader to the end. Her execution is heartbreaking for me. I like that one quote: Isval: '"I hate you and everything you stand for. But when I murdered, I murdered out of love." , Vader: "I know precisely what you mean." then he kills her brutally after Sidious's order. I remember, I teared up at that scene. And then when Sidious told him to murder all the innocent villigars, who had sheltered them before that, and he did it, I think this is the most heartbreaking moment. I loved this novel very much, and I will give it 5/5!

    You have to remember we're only 4 books into the new extended universe, they need to establish these characters and the tone in the universe. I know we all know them but as Legends didn't happen it would be weird to just jump into crazy galaxy altering things so soon.

    Rob Walker It's very likely I'm being too harsh on the new books. On one hand I'm totally fine with the new stories picking up steam. On the other hand, Heir to the Empire was like the beginning of the original EU and it was incredible. I think the new canon is just trying something different. They are writing novels with the knowledge that new movies are coming out, so it seems that the books are just smaller, and that's okay, especially if we're going to have a new movie every year. I'm wishing for stories like the Thrawn Trilogy, but I think the movies will fill that void as they come out.

    I'm surprised you gave it a 3/5, I would have understood a 4/5 but 3/5 means it's 100% average and to me it was def one of the better books. It is true that we know vader and Palpatine will survive from the start, but the basic premise is still pretty exciting and the writing quality is pretty good. Personally this and Star Wars ep 3 by Matthew Stover were my fav books.

    I can't really disagree with your assertions, but I guess my expectations differ from yours. I want novels (and comics) that flesh out the universe and further develop the characters and their relationships, while also telling an interesting story. I thought "Lords of the Sith" definitely did that. I do disagree with you that this is a book primarily for fans of the Sith, especially since Vader and the Emperor are only a part of the story (a major part, though).

    Matthew Leahy Yeah, I think my expectations are somewhat high, to be honest haha. I really want like the next Heir to the Empire out of each of these books. I want to follow multiple characters through multiple plotlines. I want a trilogy, and Aftermath may very well fit that hole. I've definitely enjoyed all the new books so far. I just haven't enjoyed any of them as much as some of the Legends books I loved. And that just might be too much to ask right at the start of the new canon.

    I've never read expanded universe books and only recently decided to read any star wars books because i had to go on a cross country trip to take my sister to college. While gone I read Tarkin, Lords of the Sith, and a legends book about darth maul. I personally liked Tarkin better than Lords of the Sith because in Tarkin we got to learn about Tarkin as I had expected but, Lords of the Sith I felt focused too much on the rebels than on Vader and Sidious. I read both Tarkin and Sith to learn about Tarkin, Vader, and the dark side in a canon sense. Tarkin did it better as far as having multiple perspectives while keeping the book Tarkin central where as Sith seemed to be more about the rebels without adding anything to either Vader or Sidious. Also, I couldn't like the rebels, I don't even remember the female twi'leks name and Cham didn't seem like the Cham from the Clone Wars, despite it being 8 years later I still expected him to be more recognizable. I like rooting for rebels but they were EXTREMELY unlikable just with the whole mantra of "freedom fighters, not terrorists" get's very old very quick and is used to justify everything they are doing. What ultimately made me not like the rebels is when the female twi'lek said something along the lines of "they're imperials so they deserve to die since they're furthering the cause." Then she proceeds to murder random imperials (not to mention there is a whole chapter on her literally stalking and hunting imperials at clubs) which to me made them seem just as awful as the empire while the rebels we know from the original trilogy never came off like that. Ultimately, I would read Lords of the Sith again but skip all the boring rebel twi'lek parts, it was advertised as a book about the sith and ended up more like a book on a bunch of rebels with a side focus on a middle aged twi'lek being in love with a younger twi'lek and comparing her to his daughter. Just be prepared, this book isn't as Sith or Empire as you may expect or hope for it and if thats what you want from the book, save your money.

    So far the short stories have had the biggest freedom right now. I am curious how these novels might be viewed moving forward as future works integrate them. For example, the canon novel to have the biggest integration has been A New Dawn. In the prologue, you get introduced to Kanan's former self, before his master chooses him. It is a great little story that is super short. The rest of the book is an interesting character piece, but doesn't have too much of an impact overall to the grand story. However, comparing the novel information to the TV show, you start to see more layers to Kanan's character that doesn't get outright stated. Lastly, you take the information from the novel and the TV show and you apply it to the Kanan comic (with nods to Shatterpoint and The Clone Wars tv show), and then you start to get more of an impact to the comic. On top of that looking at everything it starts to become a very interesting story. However, right now there is not that full integration, with the other novels. I am excited to see the new short stories coming out in the paperback to A New Dawn/Tarkin combo deal. They are said to tie the two stories together, and I really want to read them. It will be interesting when we do get the powerhouse novels again that knock it out the park. So far, it might be comics/tv shows/movies that do that for now...

    Franklin Taylor I totally agree that Rebels/A New Dawn/Kanan: The Last Padawan are the most integrated right now. I hope the rest of the universe begins to feel that way.

    The problem for me really is that I don't like the 'unstoppable force' Darth Vader a lot, at least not the way they handle him the comics. In the book, the situations are not done to a ridiculous degree, and I like it that way, I can see Vader surviving this thing and believe it. In the comics, Vader should have died 50+ times now, I don't how much of a sith he is. When 300 rebels have him surrounded and at gunpoint, Vader is dead, no arguing. Same thing if 3 squadrons of superiur rebel fighters attack him at once. Funny enough, Rebels handles Vader the best I feel, with him just being a calm, calculating, mythodical villain who can kick a realistic amount of ass (realistic within the bounderies of space-wizardry that is).

    I understand your point but don't know how one fixes said problem. I enjoyed Lords of the Sith and am struggling through Heir to the Jedi. To your point, there are small tidbits in each book that point to the larger picture (i.e. Belkor mentioning he would hate to Inquisitors after him), but one could probably go without the book and get the gist of it. Having said that, I thought Lords of the Sith especially showed how Vader and Sidious' relationship was developing early on after RotS. Tarkin then builds on how Vader and Tarkin built the bond which obviously developed into ANH. Those stories I feel are important in understanding the larger picture of the SWU. I can see though, and Lords of the Sith shows this, how difficult it would have been to challenge the Emperor throughout his 25+ year reign before RotJ. Only a sneak attack by Vader, right at the end of it all, to include sacrificing himself, could have changed the galaxy. That should be the real lesson after reading Lords of the Sith.

    Brent Vogt I totally agree we're getting a lot of cool tidbits. I just miss the larger, galaxy-spanning stories like Heir to the Empire. Stories that feel like Star Wars movies. But I understand they can't do that every time. I'm hoping Aftermath will be a little larger in scope.

  • @brentvogt7312

    @brentvogt7312

    I completely agreed with the Aftermath comment and also understand your point of view as I felt the same way during LotS. I feel the Aftermath Trilogy will encompass around 5-10 years of time starting with the Battle of Jakku. After that there will be a galactic stalemate of sorts, people will get disgruntled over who(m)ever is in control over 10-15 years, then the First Order will find footing a few years before we get to TFA. Basically, just like the WWI/WWI inter-years but with a slightly larger timeframe. That shot in Teaser 2 of the stormtroopers really gives me a Nuremberg Nazi rally vibe.

Maybe if it had a different title I'd be more satisfied with it. Like it was stated in the video.. it's hard become invested in the rebel characters because you know they're going to fail. 2.5/3. I’m rather late on the scene, but going to comment anyway. I got Lords of the Sith as an audiobook from my library, so free. It was enjoyable but nothing extraordinary. I didn’t mind knowing from the outset that Vader and Sidious survive. Mors and Bellcor were interesting enough, and I didn’t know their fates ahead of time. I did object to the animals in the equatorial jungle of Ryloth. I don’t care how productive an ecosystem you have, I just can’t believe it can support such a concentration of large predators. And the lyleks even have their cave base. Maybe if they moved around like a swarm of locusts, but they don’t.
