Yes and no. It was a huge thing, and became so ubiquitous in Wellington that some people git jaded & fed up.

It really feels like the entire filmmaking industry had been building up to The Lord of the Rings trilogy. The last films ever made in which EVERYONE involved gave everything they had with all the love in their hearts.

"Into the West" makes me tear up every single time.

I love how Ian McKellen came down before the premiere to say hello to fans

late 90's and early 2000 were the golden age of movie, we have Titanic, Saving Private Ryan, Band of Brother series, The LOTR trilogy, The Matrix

I was a fan of the Star Wars trilogy then too! Disney was making great animated films back then too 😢

I don't think we'll ever get a film series quite like LOTR ever again. A worldwide phenomenon that revived an entire dying genre of film, made completely outside of the Hollywood system, that was clearly a labour of love for all involved (seriously, just read about some of the unnecessary details the props and set departments put in just because they wanted everything to feel authentic and cool, and the work all the actors put into perfecting their roles), that got this kind of fanfare and pageantry for its premiere, and which is still talked about and praised almost 20 years after its release. I mean, has there ever been a film premiere that ever topped this?

I was there! One of those crazy people camped out all night. Thank you for this video it brought a tear to my eye

I don't know if its just me, but when I hear the music the soundtrack from TLOTR especially, the themes of Frodo & Sam, I cry. Howard Shore has created a masterpiece of a music with his soundtrack. That flute note is just so beautiful: there's so much hope and goodness in it.

@@Redditaurus Do you mean the "T" that I've put in front of "LOTR"? Frankly, I get confused sometimes, because the full name is The Lord of The Rings, but it's mostly spelled as LOTR. So, go figure which is more appropriate.

2:35 Much respect for Sir Ian. Nothing feels more magical than Lord of the Rings to me. Something about the spirit of the universe Tolkien created including the execution of these films will just always be special.

I was there, just a couple of feet away from the parade.. a day i’ll never forget.

LoTRs saved me from constant sadness and despair because of that one tragedy. It was a gift, brought to us when we needed it the most! 😭🙏🤴

Back when movies was exciting and fun to watch.

I was there, we'd never experienced that kind of celebrity before then and haven't since. Was an amazing time to be living in Wellington

i dont think any film in hollywood could ever be as grand or as celebrated as this trilogy... the sculptures and props alone are enough to make ur jaw drop! it's the best cast and crew ever assembled! no wonder they made a clean sweep of the oscar's! a first for a fantasy film!

That's the thing with the older films, the older films are better than many of the new ones, you don't get films like The Lord Of The Rings, Titanic, Chronicles of Narnia, you don't get stuff like that anymore, films are nowhere near the same now

Most former commenwealth nations are pretty interesting to visit I think. India has really unique culture and food, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand all have spectacular nature

And to think I was 5 years old living in Australia when Two Towers came out, and didn't even know the books or movies existed, until friends of mine gifted me the books two years later.. Man I would give so much to go back and relive this part of history.

My dad and my brother went to see Return Of The King in theaters 3 different times

What I'd give to go back to these days when everything seemed hopeful and movies such as this gave you the excitement you don't feel today.

Man if time travels ever invented I gotta go back and witness this premiere or see all three films when they were first released in theaters because it has to be unbelievable.

0:54 That old ringtone. Havent heard it in so long. So cool to see this. I remember I was in class doing CAD at the time this happened and was watching on the classroom tv how Return of the King was wrapping up and preparing for the premiere.

This must have been so emotional

I was just in Wellington. What a wonderful place New Zealand is and the films were all so good.

Back in the days when it was safe to camp out for tickets……….😢 No one will see its like again: ten years, 9 hours, a truly epic undertaking that will never be equalled.

I worked at Les Mills at the time (car Taranaki St & Manners st/Courtenay Place). We watched from the rooftop throughout the day. Incredible weather, electric atmosphere, the ringwraiths horses were spooked by the crowds, so they stopped to calm down and have a drink in our carpark. A day I'll never forget, as a fan of the films and more so, a lover of Wellington NZ❤❤❤

I am crying from the moment the soundtrack starts playing until the end. There is something majestic and mystic about the LOTR that other movies haven't. This trilogy is still my number-one movie of all time and up until now, no other film has surpassed or even matched the grandeur of Lord of The Rings.

After 23 , 22 to 21 years. Peter Jackson’s lord of the rings changed cinema history. I didn’t watch lord of the rings until I was 9 years old in 2004 . They’re so amazing and incredibly well done. The books by Tolkien are still the best

So heartwarming

I would do anything to go back to my home country and visit all the locations of Middle-Earth

This is truly amazing. All of the effort put into this is astonishing. Wow.

Every little and big thing in this is EPIC. THIS PREMIER looks As it should! Phenomenal

Whenever I hear someone say they are going to make the greatest movie ever made, I’m unaffected, simply because it’s already been done!!!

The day of the premiere they flew the LOTR cast all over New Zealand I remember playing tennis outside that day and seeing their plane above they were flying around my city for a good few minutes before moving onto the next city.

i remember recording this on vhs. recording all the news coverage on tv1 and holmes. i wasn't allowed to go to the premiere that day as i didn't have anyone to go with. oh man the memories.

I should've been there 😪, it gets me in the feels every time I watch these movies. I was 14 when the first one came out and it has been a major part of my life, not just the movies but all of the books and everything.

Stupid choice to watch this right before bed. Way too exciting to be able to sleep, while simultaneously sad because nothing will ever be that incredible again.

It would be amazing to have these kind of events back in New Zealand

Wow, seeing this almost feels like it comes from a completely different era even though it happened only a little less than twenty years ago. You don't really see movie premieres that feel like this anymore because the audience has nearly lost all interest. Nowadays fantasy movies and franchises have become less about the audience and building up a fantastical world for people to lose themselves in and more about money and fulfilling agenda quotas. The Lord of the Rings really is one of the most beloved fantasies to ever exist and I am glad to be one of the people who hold it near and dear to my heart forever. I am also glad that these movies were made when they were because if it had been made under todays standards, it would have suffered a great deal. Edit: I would also like to say that these movies really show the absolute beauty that is New Zealand. The landscape and fields of green, the mountains and valleys, the rivers and streams, all of it really feels and looks like something straight out of a fairytale book. I only hope that one day in my life I can visit New Zealand and see its beauty for myself.

Hysterical. Literally built the most modern and powerful country out of nothing but nomadic Hunter gatherer lands in less than 500 years. And before u say muh slavery. Slavery only counted for 6% of the total output of the southern United States. The culture of the USA is hard work and innovation unseen since the times of the Roman Empire. But it’s easier to pour on the self hating woe is me routine. I’m proud to be an American and proud of my culture and more people should be too..
