Don't forget the government leaflet advised the decision would affect people for _"decades to come"_ so people voted thinking it would take a few years to get sorted and establish a new relationship with the EU and the rest of the world. It's just a matter of putting division behind us and working with the will of the people. As Remainers would have asked for had the result been 51% to Remain.

Brexit will be great for this Country.

We are where we are because of a lack of compromise. The European institutions had been allowed to become too bloated, they were not (and are still not) being adequately held to account for their budgets or their actions, and they were running towards Federalism despite several countries saying they were not in any hurry to become the United States of Europe. The UK was one of a number of countries calling for reform in the European institutions. The reality is that Brexit was the last resort, and reform (with a halt to federalism, at least for now) was the direction the European Commission should have been taking. The Commission has referred to the UK's "divorce bill", to extend the metaphor I think the marriage had become an abusive controlling relationship where Britain was being told to shut up, keep handing over money and be quiet.

Federalism is written into the EU aims and is inevitable. There is no firm date, natural progression or not. The U.K. governments were never under any illusion but failed to educate the populace in the many advantages that full membership did and would bring. We have allowed our treacherous politicians to throw away our children’s birthright.

I have great respect for Lord Heseltine, ok perhaps unfairly because I know nothing about his past. He was the first voice I heard when I regretted I had voted Leave, this was very soon after the referendum but in all honesty I still voted Leave after having heard a very interesting opinion on LBC, great reason to remain in the EU, the man who spoke was a member of the HoLs, I didn’t note his name, I’ve regretted it every day since, I’ve never doubted my huge mistake.

@@Jack-fs2im There are differing economic performance, but where is the constitutional 'split'?? Its not there, it will 'split' if the EU ceases to exist. Not good for Europe and us if that were to happen. As it is not good for the UK is Scotland breaks away. Though in geopolitical terms that would be minutiae!! If Europe were to split north-south, that would be catastrophic for both!

As far as Tories go I'd always thought of Heseltine as being almost alright. More of a Liberal Tory. Or has he done the sensible thing now and become a conservative Liberal?

It's actually down to the government which convinced people that brexit was the way to go to answer a lot of these questions. It is now too late and it's going to be a bitter pill for the country. I would also like to know why the government blocked an investigation into russian interference in the brexit elections. Foreign interference should be a partisan issue.

The essence of Boris Johnson is that he is all about the sensational headline, the instant glory. He is not about the long haul that follows, that boring stuff isn’t his thing, it’s someone else’s problem while he focuses only on chasing the next big hurrah. Nowhere is this more evident than in his handling of the pandemic, he seems totally incapable of managing a protracted ongoing crisis. On Brexit, we had the triumphant “Get Brexit Done” and the “Oven Ready Deal” and are now becoming mired in such realities as spiralling costs due to border restrictions, labour shortages in key sectors, and the impasse of the Irish border issue, I.e. the tedious long term implications and consequences that do not excite him and in which he shows little interest.

Remember the wishes of the electorate !this is the only important point here and anyone preventing these wishes is not good for the UK or the negotiations .
