What amazed me most watching this, was how quickly she was 'present', nothing static about this lively laughing girl. I found myself smiling just looking at her. Your confidence with brush and colour was a joy to watch.
Merci pour ce beau partage 🙏 c est magnifique 🫶bon Dimanche 🎼🎶🍀
Wow , the artist dares to push the value. Love it!
Great to see how layers built. Five or six times I said, "Oh, no. Now you ruined it." But of course it was brilliant start to finish. Thanks so much for this video.

Magnifique ! Merci !
You must have watercolours going through your veins. It's like watching you predict the future. There're just so many layers before the end result it's nothing short of amazing.

So beautiful...
Wow.. Thank you for this beautiful painting! I study aquarell painting techniques - it's quite a unic technique! I love watercoloring too! 😊💚🌿
The strongest quality of your art is the quality of life you engender into the painting. They are alive and no-less than perfect

Fantastic painting
Definitely, Christine, it is marvelous to watch your talent develop into a finish piece. I was wondering if you ever use watercolor pencils and if so, perhaps you could do a tutorial on a portrait with watercolor pencils. Thank you for sharing your art with us. It is great.
Again, I'm amazed at the how dark the colors are to begin with. You are really a fabulous artist. At about 6:30-7 minutes, if it was my painting, I would have crumpled it up thinking I had made a horrible mistake. But your finished painting is beautiful. Thanks for demonstrating.

Christine, I love this one in particular, because I can see that the line drawing isn't over-complicated--and I know that's part of the point of a line drawing is to be a guide & let the paint do the work for you, but I can tell that the individual line shapes you used were simple and not particularly fussy, and it makes me confident that I can do line portrait drawings and improve with time...portraits are just one of those things that scare me because of the high degree of accuracy needed, but this proves that accuracy doesn't require a headache.

Absolutely! I do a lot of portraits where I don't care about the likeliness - just using a photo for inspiration and make a good painting for fun :) You can even go and try to sketch with watercolor directly, without a pencil sketch. Here is a video where I tried it kzread.info/dash/bejne/hIyIrJacgL3OhrA.html

I've only got a small Winsor & Newton pocket set at the moment,just for small details and touch ups on my pencil drawings. Clearly you use something a little more substantial, but what would you recommend? Do you use pans or tubes?
@chkarron
7 жыл бұрын
Small sets are great for on the way and outside sketching! My older watercolors are in pans and I love them as well, but now I use tube paints on a tray palette. I paint a lot with watercolor and tubes are great for refilling!

I assume you have dampened the complete paper before you start? Your washes seem to take ages to dry.Just as it look like you've trashed the painting, everything has blended in nicely in a couple of minutes!Really astounding results.I would have gotten in panic so often in this painting and started to mop off colour with a tissue or something, then the painting really would have been trashed!Great work.

Thank you, Gary, I appreciate that! Yes, I wetted the paper before starting and I kept some places wet through layering. Usually paint looks much darker when wet and panic can come easily, I have just learned to ignore it and wait until it dries :)
this is great speedpaint. i love how you're not afraid of puttig intense color. im always petrified of using too much because well at first in looks horrible too much contrast so in the end, i use so much water all over the paper (i dont know if it's just the quality of my watercolor paper) and they look more dull. anyways subscribed already :)

Thank you! Yes there is always an ugly stage somewhere in the middle, but usually after watercolor dries it'll be much lighter. Happy painting :)

A great tutorial. I am new to the game, but was intrigued by the build up of layers, and the delicate subtlety of the finish compared to what initially seemed the sometimes gross boldness of some paint applications. What would be of even greater assistance is some description of the colours you were using - which seems so difficult to a beginner, especially in relation to skin tones. Thanks for your contribution

Thanks so much for your kind words and feedback, Hugh! I guess I will get better with every video I make :) Thanks for the suggestion, will keep that in mind next time!
Christine, I am mostly a 3-D artist but I love watercolor! I am attempting to explore more instruction and came across your awesome videos! Thank you for sharing and I would love to hear more of what you are doing - how you choose to "dance" around the paintings! What watercolors do you recommend? Thank you!

Welcome here, Sue, and thank you! Because I am mostly illustrator I use all kind of different media. My watercolor pieces seem to be popular, although I am not a watercolor guru :) I have painted so far with Russian and German watercolor paints, which are very good quality and Winsor&Newton, and Grumbacher paints - I like them all. I wouldn't recommend the cheap ones, they don't have enough pigments to work with.
1 hour in total to paint this!? Man I need to become this fast!
Nice art, new friend here, let’s stay connected ✅
Why is your paper not warping?do you stretch it beforehand? or do you use any other methods to let it stay flat? Btw lovely work!!
@chkarron
7 жыл бұрын
Yes, it warps a little, but you can't see it very well in the video. I just tape it down, no stretching before painting. Thank you!
Super
Thanks for beautiful demo! Which brand of watercolor paper do you use, is it 140lb, CP?

Thank you! Yes, it is.
Excellent ! George Wu, AIA, ARCHITECT, NCARB 2017-7-15
What kind of tape do you use to secure the paper?
Hey - I'm a fellow aspiring watercolor enthusiast. You seem unafraid to use black in your portraits - is that a true black or warm/cool grays? And if so, how are you getting your grays that dark?! Also super impressed by how you control the values. I mean you're going for some bold colors and you seem to do so with confidence... is that just something that comes with experience?
@chkarron
7 жыл бұрын
Hi Peter, no black, but Payne's Gray, Prussian Blue, Burnt Umber and Winsor Violet (Winsor&Newton) make a nice dark color. Two or three layers make the darkest value - usually I decide up front which parts I want to have the darkest, but sometimes it develops while painting by balancing the values. I have been painting and drawing all my life and I guess the experience takes away the fear of putting down the colors, but believe me, sometimes in the middle of the painting I am not sure how it'll turn out :D Thanks so much!

are you using wood pulp paper? it looks like your water isnt absorbing well, not like on cotton paper. curious if you are using cheaper paper and if you just do that for your videos but not for more important projects?
excellent

I learned a lot about layering of colors through your video. Whats the best paper to use? Mine gets rotten and disintegrates when I apply water and more color to the surface

Strathmore watercolor paper, cold press, 140lb, 400 series.
did u just used black color???
@chkarron

I like to use a mix of dark colors - this way I am flexible to mix warm or cold darks. So no black there, it just looks darker when wet :)
I would kill to be able to draw like that!!! I love drawing but it's not near this good.
