    So loop hero takes the concept of a gameplay loop, manifests it in the most literal sense and endeavours to determine how far you can stretch such a creation. You can stretch it quite far as it turns out.

    To be fair to Everhood, they kind of pull a plot twist on the genocide route by showing you it was the answer. To avoid too many spoilers, everyone in Everhood is immortal and have lived so long that life has become dull and meaningless. So your not so much killing them as you are helping them commit suicide, some of them just appreciate it more than others. In fact, the plot is a more hopeful version of the game 'off', which is a pretty obscure game so I don't blame people for comparing it to the more popular Undertale.

    And to be unfair to Everhood, the way the story is laid out comes off as some sort of false flag psyop to convince people that Buddhists are advocates for mass murder and genocide. I know that's definitely not intended, but that just makes it all the more irresponsible and quite frankly psychotic. One of the last things you do in the game is SPOILERS get cheered on to commit suicide. How the fuck do you not step back and think "Huh, maybe we should reframe our reincarnation sequence to not be the direct result of slaughter and self-harm." The gameplay and soundtrack are dope, tho. 8/10 Would kill everyone and then myself again. Seriously, though, if they don't have some kind of mental health warning, someone is going to kill themselves after playing this game. If I were a Buddhist I'd be seriously offended.

  • @Chromeberd

    @Chromeberd

    @@PrismPoint That's like arguing any piece of media showcasing suicide or criminal acts are dangerous to those who choose to engage with it. The fact is that the game delivers its messages pretty well through the gameplay. If you're a Buddhist and you're offended that's a fault of you being incapable of seeing alternative religions and beliefs that may believe otherwise. God knows there hasn't been enough offensively theologically based films through the years that have done worse yet were still appreciated.

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@Mernom I did, in fact, play it. I just checked Steam, and I was only able to play for not quite an hour before I found myself not wishing to push on. Normally I give games closer to 2 hours if I can, so I must have really not clicked with it. Given I played this back in 2017, I can't say the critique is fresh in my mind. But I didn't find the gameplay itself engaging. People are really complimentary of the battle system, but it felt...simplistic? And I didn't really feel anything for the characters either, so I was not really engaged with dialogue choices. Given a large portion of the love for this game seems to stem from the characters and the interactions with them, the fact the characters fell flat for me must undermine almost everything else. The gameplay would likely be fine as a way to break up the pace if the story and its characters were enough to drive you along. Though Yahtzee seems to think the game was excellent in every way, save for graphics. Sounds as if he thinks each mechanic in this game could have carried an entire game on its own, but it felt more like everything was passable and worked to serve the core, assuming you enjoyed the core - the core, from what I can tell from others, being the story. Again, it's a bit tough to go into specific criticism of the game given it was nearly 4 years ago at this point. I'd love to have more concrete examples, but I guess there just seems to be a lot of love & emotion surrounding this game, and I just didn't feel any of it while playing. I'm sure the sky-high hype didn't help, given how long it took for me to play it. Perhaps I'll go back and try it again - always feels strange to have your opinion so far off from others, and struggle to see what they see - but with an overstuffed Steam library, not sure when that might be. Again, I don't fault anyone for loving this game. I don't think I'm any kind of arbiter of taste or something lol. Just one of those times where, for whatever reason, things just don't click, and I chalk it up to the fact nothing can be 100% loved by everyone. It'd be boring if we all loved the same stuff.

    While I was surprised you didn't get the choice in Everhood too (well aside from like a secret ending), Everhood's route is different. (Spoiler ahead obviously) You learn that everyone in the world are immortal and, if you look deeper, most of their lives are worse because of it. You then learn that you're the only person that could do something and, in fact, before you start the game you learn that your character tried before but never could go through with it... because you're the only one who could kill them. And killing them meant that they could finally be reincarnated into a better life. I definitely felt bad for most of the characters, but Everhood is the scenario where the genocide route is the right choice. There's even some, who ended up getting the worse hand outta this situation, that end up thanking you when you kill them and they all eventually are grateful once you meet up with them again after they realize that it was for the best.

The ending confirms, essentially, you were doing the right thing by "killing" all of these people-- they were immortal, trapped in a small world losing all of their memories. When you destroyed their corporeal forms they were allowed to move on to better things. You're supposed to feel conflicted at first, but at the end content.

    @@trequor The funny thing is that this game doesn't try to be Undertale. It's a common mistake thinking this way. A game can be inspired, but Everhood doesn't ASPIRE to be a Undertale-like game. No one said that and that's a shame that people for this reason couldn't enjoy the simplicity and the FIRST game of Chris Nordgren e Jordi Roca. It's not like people that make indie games, from the moment and foward to Toby Fox releasing Undertale, have to make a godly game, and most people assume that just for the inspiration and minor similarities. And the thing that sadden me the most are this reviews that influences radically people. I played this game by not knowing even of what was about or even checked the steam page. I just blast trought and at least I'm happy for that. I prefered it from Undertale for this exact reason.

    @@trequor the only "complaints" I would give to this game is the rushed characters, that were a bit enjoyable, more than others, and the lack of variety of battles after you got the arm. There are some that changed but yes, of course they would have done better, but I can understand why is like this. It's the first game of these developers, and I can see through this game all their passion that they put into it nonetheless! As for the story, well, the game, for what it is, as a nice story, that could have been further explored in some places and concepts but I think it's fine. Again , this is just an indie game, almost a passion project, not a Triple A game or "the next undertale". Just a fun, but memorable game, for me at least

    Glad I internalized Yahtzee's advice ~5 years ago that Undertale is best experienced by knowing as little as possible about it. Downloaded and played it for the first time 2 months ago, and when I searched KZread, I was just SHOCKED by how much content is out there I was previously unaware. That first complete Undertale playthrough patched some emotional holes in my soul, and I found myself chasing and trying to recapture that same high. To those who've never tried drugs and don't understand why people become addicted to something that can become so ruinous, Undertale (for many) is a good analog for feeling complete, which eventually lapses and fades and can never be experienced that first way again.

    Loop Hero has some stuff going for it. I played it for 66 hours and beat it and the optional content. That sounds like a lot but much of that time was due to one of Loop Hero's flaws; it takes too much time to get to the engaging part of the loop. If you don't get the cards you need from the initial slimes for a couple loops then you're stuck basically staring at your screen bored out of your mind. Oh, and if you beat a boss and have an over powered run going, you can leave it on for a while to grind out resources. That's also where a bunch of that play time came from. Despite all that time played, I feel it needs a bit more to be great as well as finishing some of the unfinished stuff(there's part of the equipment UI that has gloves and belts greyed out, it's likely that these equipment slots are for an unfinished character class(*)). I feel like there needs to be more interaction of tiles laid down and something to balance out forests(specifically thickets). (*)All characters use the same equipment UI but are limited to certain types of equipment with some overlap between the classes. This is why I feel the unused equipment slots indicate a new class.

    Ah, finally, a ZP review I disagree with, thought I'd gone into NPC mode in terms of game reviewers I like. Everhood had a genuinely interesting spin on the whole "Undertale's Genocide run", in that (SPOILERS) it was painted as a liberating thing, a necessary evil, as the inhabitants were trapped in Everhood for a million fuckin whatever years, to the point of allegedly losing the very concept of gender (which is why everyone in that game goes by they/them), and the world had fallen apart into a small number of distinct, extant areas. I also feel the whole "it's just trying to be Undertale" thing does the game a disservice, sure, the game wears its inspiration on its sleeve, but it has its own ideas, its own story, its own themes generally.

The whole "genocide" route isn't an option on purpose; because you learn a lot of the background information on the actual protagonist as you go through the second act. There's also a *lot* of buddhism going on in the story... particularly regarding the dharmachakra/wheel of dharma. In Undertale, the genocide is this unspeakable horror, where you're barging in on folks trying to get by and ending them without any explanation. In Everhood, your character is not some stranger, they are a famous/infamous individual, and the folks with recognizable power know what's going on; even if the player doesn't yet. Is Everhood *heavily* inspired by undertale? Yep. And the devs don't try to hide that fact. But they do a really good job of making it look like disco-tale, when they actually have a very different game.

    That Shadow of the Beast reference really got me. That's the game that pushed me on a 15+ years career as a gaming art developer, a game that in 1989 on the amiga would blow your mind to pieces because no other game was better looking and more hauntingly moody/nostalgic/depressing.

    “Super Mario RPG, but that was more than 10 years ago...” Is anybody going to tell him that Super Mario RPG came out more than a quarter century ago? There are people with graduate degrees who were born after Super Mario RPG came out.

    I'd say for the better, because it, along with the remake of Thousand-Year-Door, indicates that Nintendo has a renewed interest in making Mario RPGs.
