this is the first time i’ve seen hyunjin this high on a vocal ranking. thank you for actually listening to and analyzing all the girls vocals thoroughly. hyunjin gets the rep of being one of the weaker vocals in loona (talking about in the bottom w vivi and gowon) despite debuting with a BALLAD.

@@matthewbird1067 This is kind of my opinion too, but I can understand why Yeojin is higher here. Lately I'm really impressed with her vocals (altough I don't find her voice as diverse as Olivia's, unlike the video maker, Olivia's voice can be diverse too it's just that lower areas only really fit her so she gets mostly low lines in a song because no one else is there really)

To be honest, as much as I *liked* listening to the So What era because... it's pop and I enjoy a good belt, that era was extremely unhealthy vocal-wise for all of the girls in general. But especially JinSoul. Imagine having to do so many formations and then doing not one, not two, but three of the song's highest notes live so many times. Not even head voice notes either, but belted ones. But I have lots of hope for her. She's already improving a lot. The foundation is there. The immense talent and power are there.

@@alexblack4048 HaSeul did not *formally* study opera, actually. Joining LOONA prevented her from pursuing formal opera training. However, she's really good for a hobbyist. Many idols, especially ones as young as HaSeul, are talented but struggle even with notes that should very well be in their range because of improper technique. HaSeul being able to reach C6 with ease shows that whatever informal study she's had has helped her develop a very healthy head voice. C6 *should* very much be within the soprano range. She was also in choir, which isn't "study" but does often come with some training. (I was in choir too and we were taught stuff like finding and engaging the diaphragm.) JinSoul also studied in a vocal academy, same one as Solar from Mamamoo and Karina from Aespa. This is also undoubtedly (to me) why JinSoul (much like Karina) is a more technically proficient singer than some people like to claim she is. She seems to have a good grasp of how to apply singing techniques well, but sometimes (due to anxiety or circumstance) she's not able to apply them or apply them as efficiently as she could. Chuu and Yves also went to vocal academies.

There are solid reason for these placements. *Haseul’s classical training explains why her voice isn’t as generally versatile in pop but works VERY well for specific parts. #control *Chuu is exactly what you want for pop with range and control.

I'm a classical singer! One thing that classical training often does is improve one's endurance. I've noticed that Chuu gets kind of exhausted and it shows in her voice. There was one live performance of So What where it was clear that she was having a hard time, and it's understandable because that song is very demanding. She's definitely gotten better, though. I haven't gotten that kind of exhaustion from Haseul when she was actively promoting, though because of her hiatus there aren't a lot of examples of situations where she would have gotten tired. From my own experience, training in a classical setting has helped my more commercial-like singing. My belting is more stable because I can support and control my breath better.

  • @Crocoroar

That's easily explainable. Chuu is a master of her voice but not a master of her heart. When she gets too excited she loses the ability to regulate her breathing. She has a big heart and gets excited when people show up to see her. I don't think anyone that went to see her would think less of her for her being excited to perform for them.

loved the video. Notes from an orbit #12 vivi - agree. She was sooo airy in the beginning and now shes getting a bit better, like you see in Love Battery. Let's hope she keeps improving #11 go won - even tho she didnt get that much better like vivi, i think shes ok. For the ones who don't know, she has zero confidence singing. She believes she was picked to loona due to her dancing, which is pretty good #10 olivia - they are now starting to know how to use her voice in this last comeback. Because like go won she was picked due to dancing and rapping, which she has the biggest potential in loona #9 yeojin - she got so much better from debut. And unfortunately we couldnt see much of the improvement because loona usually sing more in fansights and all. I like hee lower range tho #8 hyunjin - enormous improvment since debut. Like yeojin too bad she couldnt show a lot in 2020 but producers said she got A LOT better since 2019. From 2016-2019 she used to sing airy so her voice wouldnt crack cause she has 0 confidence. Now the belts are coming and she singed in KOMS... #7 choerry - agree 100% with you #6 jinsoul - agree 100% #5 kim lip - agree. I just wish you talked about how she is comfortable with head voice, even big notes such as that fucking Bb5 #4 heejin - another HUGE improvment. The KOMS doesnt do her justice anymore. In the end of 2020 and 2021 shes been showing how her belts got better. Actually theres one in why not that it was soooooo clear i was shook. Shes the one to watch out. #3 yves - agree. Her lower voice is almost as good as heejin, her belting are good as jinsoul and head is good as kim lip. There are some hidden clips where she disputes head voice with chuu and omgggg #2 haseul - agree. Shes my ultt she has my favorite voice in kpop. As a JinSoul vocal fan who studies all of her strengths and weaknesses, I am really glad to hear your assessment. I personally rank her higher than Kim Lip, Yves, and HeeJin, but though you ranked her sixth of the unofficial vocal line, you were very fair. You weren't dogmatic about it and acknowledged that 1) singers do tend to improve over time and 2) some of the criteria are ultimately rather subjective; as well as recognizing her strengths and immense potential too (and that the vocal line from 3rd to 6th aren't that far apart in terms of skill). A lot of people usually act as if singing ability is a fixed thing. There are lots of incredibly talented people who need more polish and skill. Singing is a mixture of talent and skill. Skill is extrinsic; it can be and often is improved. I'm always really happy to see you acknowledge whenever idols have lots of potential and inborn talent. Even when I don't have particularly strong opinions about a group's vocals (like with ITZY), it's so tiring to see people act as if singing ability is static, doesn't change. That's simply untrue.

I’ve seen a trend in k-pop vocalists. Usually companies will train half or 1/4 of the vocalists properly. Usually the ones with more “natural talent”. The others are given the light, airy, squeaky k-pop voice which is easy to produce but if not done well sounds well... They sort of put all their eggs in one basket instead of bringing up all the members to a good level. Then fans get angry when one member sings half the song and the others do ad-libs when the company invested in that member to be “the singer” in the first place. It’s annoying but it means they only have to pay for a few vocal coaches ~

I really do agree with your ranking. I think something that is tricky with LOONA is unlike some kpop groups where the main vocal is the only member capable of singing the "hard parts", the majority of them have the vocal ability to sing most parts of their songs. So instead of their lines being assigned based on their vocal ability or lack thereof, their lines are mostly assigned by popularity, and people sometimes assume that the most popular members must have the most vocal ability rather than realizing their voices are just the most showcased.

I was so excited for this you have no idea lol. It's always so interesting to see loona vocal rankings because I don't think I've ever seen two that are the same. Loona reminds me of Gidle in the sense that what makes them a great group vocally is their vocal tones and the variety they have. There's no group where I adore their vocal tones as much as I do with Loona. I know some people get annoyed that they don't have any positions, but I think it fits them very well, one of the main reasons being that trying to fit them in positions would be a nightmare. I really appreciate the amount of research you did into each girl, it really shows that you did your best to get a complete look at each of their voices. Great video!

Great Ranking!! As a classically trained singer I can confirm that changing to a pop (contemporary) sound is really hard, you kind of need to "unlearn" a vocal placement strategy that has been ingrained into you until it becomes default mode in order to access a sound you probably had naturally before the classical training started. The beneficial aspects of a classical training, such as range (access to high notes), agility and control are imo worth the work you've put into it so I really look forward to seeing Haseul's development in the coming years.

I just wanna speak about some points about you mentioned: - Choerry (you're correct its pronounced as Cherry) is for me one of the most improved member in the group in terms of vocals and yes she has so much potential and consistency that the other members voted her as their "best vocalist". - I agree with Chuu being in the No.1 ( she isnt called Chuuriah Carey for no reason) - Ranking #3-#6 is really really hard because it comes down to preference of what do you think has better "technique" overall. I personally rank Kim Lip higher than Heejin but that's just me. -I feel like Yeojin's potential is being hindered because shes the "maknae" or the youngest in the group. I think her voice can become really good if they give her some lines within her range. -I am very excited about Haseul if shes gonna appear in their next comeback on how she improved overall because we know that her head voice is really good but I wanna see more belting from her like with Chuu. depending on criteria, haseul and chuu are interchangeable for me. haseul is classically trained in opera, stylistically she doesn’t adapt the best to pop (I loved her in butterfly though), but damn that girls got a great head voice, it’s consistently connected and supported up to F5/F#5. in terms of belting, between haseul and chuu, i would say haseul is more relaxed due to her light and heady configuration while chuu does well with a more balanced-chesty mix but suffer from fatigue earlier. however chuu has more impact on climax notes, like haseul covering hi high chuu’s part, she hits it with extreme ease but it’s pretty anticlimactic when you expect a full on belt. haseul is a healthier vocalist so in terms of technique id rank haseul first but i prefer chuu as main vocal more than haseul as she’s more of a popstar to me

  • @a.t.6610

    @a.t.6610

    2 жыл бұрын

This is sort of accurate, but also...not? The thing is... Chuu can actually have a very relaxed singing, with a very heady and light configuration, just like Haseul. This is a dynamic that Chuu can 100% reproduce (and has, in the past). So both Haseul and Chuu can access that dynamic. But the thing is Haseul clearly can't access a more balanced mix - while Chuu can. This is especially true when you consider the fact that Chuu doesn't actually belt all that much outside of LOONA songs. It's really not the kind of vocalist that she aspires to be (see her V-Lives covers too). She's being made to sing like this because she's simply the most fitted member of LOONA for that role (of a powerhouse vocalist), but otherwise her and Haseul have very similar habits (which is to sing in headvoice or mix very lightly). Chuu also have a connected headvoice, and there's somehow of a support up to D5. Haseul does support higher than her there. So she gets the upper hand there. But Chuu definitely has a more open and connected voice within the F4-B4 range. I feel like they're quite similar, honestly. One is a little stronger higher up (very high headvoice) and the other one a little stronger below (4th octave mixed register).

@@jasminewadsworth1983 in my opinion, kind of. their voices kind of sound the same to me, but that doesn't mean it's a bad thing. no one in loona sound the same tbh. but if those four were to sing one after the other, i would be so confused lol

@@zchanique9338 Tbh when all of Loona sings in a deeper range it’s easier for me to distinguish them. Lately their songs are really high-pitched, I would love a lower-pitched song that showcases their tones more.

Can we just praise Yves for a moment? Gurl, the emotion put in her voice truly amazes me, even being the main dancer, her range is so wide and technique-wise she can even surpass Chuu (maybe I'm exaggerating, I think Chuu deserves her place).

a very interesting watch, out of the loona vocal rankings i've seen i definitely agree most with this. regarding chuu though, although i agree she has the most well-controlled and extensive mix i don't really hear much openness or resonance from her in that area. in terms of sound i actually find her mix kind of similar to kimlip's - quite nasal and with a tendency to get increasingly tight and tense when she adds more volume or goes higher. luckily (unlike kimlip whelp) she can push through and give a pretty consistent belt, but it still sounds very tight and tense to me nonetheless.

I literally cried the first time I listened to Haseul's voice lmao. It's really beautiful and unique, but I'm not a professional so I dont know how to describe it hehe. This video is really interesting and gives a good and complete explanation on the placements. ALSO Haseul needs more lines 😭 but I'm sure that when she comebacks we will see a lot of improvement from her!!!
