This is nice but largely useless…if you know HOW to draw you how to draw everything men, women or elephant. There is NO magically solution. You need to draw every day. It can takes years. Anybody can draw and if you are gifted it will be faster.

This is obviously true. You need to practice a lot and will get better that way. Duh. But I wouldn't say these models are useless at all. The head is a very(!) complex thing and these simplified models can help you grasp the forms faster. Have you tried them? Also, it isn't really like "I know how to draw" and now I can draw anything. To an extent, yes, if you can draw basic forms. But you still need to practice individual proportions and anatomy of specific objects/beings. For example, I wouldn't be able to draw a car convincingly right now.

The problem the Reilly method is that it lacks volume. I woild say its better for letting you see the flow between shapes so you can inform your volumes. To me the best teachers for anatomy have been michael hampton, marc brunet, will westen, and marshall vandruff. They focus on volume more than anything which is key.

I think all 3 would blend well in a work flow. Loomis for beginners, riley seems nice to advance to for flow, but using the asaro head for light and shadows

@4:10 I use the same method for this when I model a base head before i start sculpting the head. however I'm not really sure if this system should be credited for either loomis or bridgman because as far as i know it was bridgman who developed it or at least the first one who acquired this method from his mentor artist (forgot his name) who was a sculptor himself. personally i'd rather prefer to refer it as "bridgman head" because the term "loomis head" is already being used for the other method. *edit: i just confirmed that loomis studied under bridgman's teachings. so yeah. i think it should be rightfully called "bridgman head". and bridgman's mentor's name by the way is jean-leon gerome, famous painter and sculptor. cheers!

Interesting! I wasn't trying to make it seem like Loomis invented this - my bad. I didn't dig into the history that much. So it's interesting to know that Loomis studied under Bridgman, for sure. It seems like Loomis developed the planes a bit further though; in his books he seems to draw a lot more small shapes than Bridgman seemed to use. At least from what I could find with a quick Google search. 🤔

@@BueskenArt no worries. 👍 was just curious. made me look into it and do my own researches. planes of the human body was actually bridgman's specialty and what he is very well-known for. in his lectures as well as the books he has written (got a copy of it myself) he simplifies the minute details of the human anatomy into planes is why his technique is very useful for both figure drawing and sculpting alike.

This is great. Some questions I have. Loomis and Reily method are mainly for drawing heads/faces to construct from imagination and not drawing from life or a photo? I've seen artists draw a loomis head to draw/paint from a reference. Usually this turns out in a way that doesn't represent the likeness of the original. Seems like there are better ways to measure instead of trying to morph a loomis head into something that looks like the reference person.

Yes, you're right. I think people are doing this as an exercise. When you're just drawing from imagination with the Loomis method, your drawings will probably look alright. At least better than wirhout any method. But if you lack a fundamental understanding of the anatomy of a head, your drawings might not be as good as they could. Drawing from reference photos with the Loomis method kindof translates this more realistic look to your Loomis drawings, making them better in the end. You can also draw the Loomis construction OVER a photo (the Reilly abstraction as well). It' a good exercise as well - and harder than one might think!

@@BueskenArt oh good. Yeah when I see people do it over a photograph, a lot of the time they get the initial circle misplaced. So I was thinking what's the point of doing that if you have to do tons of corrections just to get the initial loomis thing going.

Yep, it ain't easy. But I guess when you're able to put the circle (and the rest) over a photo believably, your understanding of the head shape should be on a pretty high level then! :D

Very clear explanation. Do most portrait artists actually use one of these methods or do they play with it for awhile but really just try to draw what they see on their own? Starting with geometric shapes when of course the face is curved seems so backwards to me. Why for example do people draw nostrils with straight lines when you already know the position and could just as easily draw the normal curve ditto with the chin. For learning proportions fine but for drawing the shape of the features starting with straight lines almost seems an affectation.

When drawing from life, I think most portrait artists use special measuring techniques with their pencil and finger. That makes it way more likely to capture a likeness. I think these methods are especially useful when drawing from imagination when you're constructing something from nothing. I guess the more advanced you become, the more you make it your own - take bits and pieces from every method and do what works for you. As for the straight lines... I like them. It's not like you couldn't draw the curved lines from the start. But straight lines simplify things. When starting a drawing, it's so important to not lose yourself in the minutiae. With straight lines you can focus on proportions and angles 100% - and not worry about getting the curve of the nostril (for example) right... yet. That would be the next step.

Whatever works for you. The head is no box though. So I think the Loomis method is a sensible approach. A box can help to get the general perspective and most basic planes right though. Methods like the Bridgman method use that.

Just add shadow over the eyes, under the nose and on the upper lip of the mouth. Work with shadows.

It works for women as well. The proportions are pretty much the same. The differences are for example that women have bigger eyes and lips and generally softer/rounder shapes.

This is a great video - I liked and subscribed! But this comment made me laugh. Women do NOT have bigger eyes or fuller lips, although they are often drawn to be stylized that way. The biggest difference in reality has to do with bone structure. Because men usually tend to have bigger bones, they tend to have stronger/sharper jawlines and cheekbones, which are places in the face where bones are more prominent. If you want to stylize your drawings to emphasize typical beauty standards (no judgment), sure, draw bigger eyes and fuller lips. It makes them prettier. 💅 😊

Thank you for explaning al the mehods for human head anatomy, which is the one of the most difficult one to draw, along with hands and feets as well, I would say here, if you learn how to control the prportions and draw bigger shapes first and break it dwn in the smaller shapes, that would help to simplify the process of drawing anything.

I normally draw head and figures using Valerie Winslow's book method and Vladimir London Russian school method, he said taught by old masters. Are those 2 entirely different from ur 3 methods of drawing heads?

I don't know enough about those methods to give an appropiate answer, I'm sorry! But from what I could find out with a quick Google search, these methods don't look that different. After all a head is a head, so there will always be the same proportions and similar abstractions of the planes of the head. 🙂 It's interesting how many similar methods there are though...

@@BueskenArtAh thanks for reply. Hope u can maybe try the Vladimir's method. His videos on KZread are plenty. Maybe make video about Vladimir London methods? Simply explained he uses lines and markings all the correct ratios and locations. Means strait lines like drawing a building, but its for the head. And the real drawing starts at the pit of neck and jawline, chin areas. Not a circle like Loomis and others. Actually very practical useful for me. Can create very detailed features. Like I can draw 2 females, and i said one is a detailed Japanese, other is detailed Russian. And really one doesn't look similar to the other yeah. Can really create very detailed chars. One of my latest drawing I draw a full figure drawing of a Japanese-ish 13 years old girl. And tat art really looks very distinct. Edit for a few hours using gimp and I got a nice 13 yr old "girl" yeah... Lets just say Vladimir's methods really works man... Loomis I tried few years back, just managed to do some anime-ish looking "multi-racial(?)" chars. I dropped it long time ago. Maybe Loomis method is more of a proportions and ratios rather than making detailed chars. I'm man from Singapore, and my latest arts, I draw 13yr old Japanese girl, 13yr old Singapore girl and 17yr old Russian girl. And edit all of em using Gimp and wow I have 3 nice detailed "girls" yeah!! Try the Vladimir's method it really works.

Exactly. That's what I recommend later in this video....

I found Riley's method too much time consuming, i'm still at beginner level because I took longer break. However using some parts of his method helps me to rate the proportions of the face and each muscle a lot better than loomi's method, which doesn't focus on proportions despite being a lot simpler.

The three parts are supposed to be equal. The top part ends at the hair line though (not the top of the head). A small (but important) detail I left out in this quick rundown of the method for brevity's sake. 🙃
