    George, 2 years ago I bumped into you at Magfest and we had a really good chat about games we played throughout the year and projects and work stress etc. It was short but meant a lot to me and we parted ways because a crowd was forming. Later that night, I opened the door to Rosa's Mexicana with a big group of friends and you were right on the other side, leaving, and with the most annoyed look on your face that my friends and I were blocking your way. We made eye contact for a second and I knew you recognized me, briefly, but it was too late and we were again on opposite sides of the door. I just want to say that I cherish that moment, I'm sorry for getting in your way, and everything has been worse since that moment. Maybe 2022 will break that curse on both of us. Here's to a new year 💕

Situation seems pretty grim right now, despite must of us getting vaccinated, this shit just refuses to go away, and we have a new strain every few months putting us back where we began...I'm trying to be positive, trying to think 2022 will be the year when this is finally over, but...it aint easy. As somone who's finally got into fighting games this year thanks to the new push for rollback I am very suprised to see it mentioned here but pleasingly so. One of the things that made fighting games inaccessible for so many people is simply not being able to attend local scenes, be it for difficulties getting there or simply a total lack of them and while most games have large communities that play the game online, fighting games are usually their own small circles so unless you've got a group of friends into the same games as you and that live close to you, good luck playing it online with high ping and delayed inputs in a genre where consistency can define matches.

    another thing i've noticed watching my hardcore fighting game fans is that these games sell for 30-60€ and to be "on top of things" you'll end up owning 5-10 titles at least within 2 years, while also being expected to purchase future releases. of course this isn't a necessity and you can focus on just one game, but i've seen it alot and considering the prices of all these games it seems a bit silly.

    @@genesises that’s literally any genre though, all throughout the gaming industry… unless you want to be “on top of” indie games instead. Fighting games aren’t inherently worth less than triple A games imo, but I do agree that the necessity to charge $60-$70 plus dlc just to recoup development cost is a problem with the current game industry. That tune’s been sung for more than a decade now though.

    just wanna clarify that while SFV does have rollback, it has a really shoddy implementation of it that leads to a ton of one-sided rollbacks (one player sees the match perfectly fine, the other one is stuck in a nightmare of constant teleporting and jerking around the screen nonstop) so it shouldn't really be mentioned alongside the other titles in that segment Guilty Gear Strive should replace it in your memory as the big japanese fighting game that finally adopted good netplay.

    I am hoping ArcSys tries to add rollback to their Xrd game, since they added to +R and Centralfiction. Hopefully Namco Bandai with give them the OK to add it to FighterZ too.

    Rollback?

  • @KreuzDrache

    @KreuzDrache

    @@michimatsch5862 From my understanding: When you do an input, it travels across the net. This can take much longer than intended for a variety of reasons, such as distance, weak internet infrastructure, using a wireless connect, spikes, ect ect. What rollback does it tries to predict a player's input during that travel time. If its correct, everything goes as intended. Otherwise the game "rollsback" to the correct input. This ideally makes a more smoother experience for both players, but its not a perfect solution and it can be messed up too. I'll be real, you probably want to do your own research or find someone who can better explain it. Infil has an article about it, Core-A Gaming has done video on rollback on it. I would strongly recommend starting with the Core-A's video.

    People stuck at home are playing video games? Video games don't have to be about grand presentations, conventions, and big budget marketing? Video games are about having fun rather than exposure? This is uplifting news! Also, thank you Adam & Eve for sponsoring George.
