This exact piece is my daily wear. Super versatile, super good on so many straps, and durable and reliable. I love it.
I can’t believe people are still bashing the 5KX because it’s not dive capable. It was my first “real” watch. Excelent quality, reliable movement and very nice finishing (I used to stare at the dial constantly). Are there some watches at the same price range with 200 meter of water resistance and screw down crown? Yes. But they probably just copy Seiko’s design. The 5KX is the real deal, at least for me. Feel free to enjoy your Steeldive, buy what makes you happy. The thing is, my heart says “Seiko”.👍🏼

Reason people are bashing 5KX is because the price went up, water resistance went down.
This actually was my first automatic watch. Bought it in January 2023. I don’t mind the push/pull crown since I’m not a scuba diver. It’s been a fantastic first watch!

I'm pretty sure 99% of people that daily dive watches don't ever go anywhere near 200m underwater, much less 100m.
@Chevsilverado
29 күн бұрын
@@aaronf.186It is useful to have a 200m depth rating even if you don’t go remotely close to that. Watches can sometimes ingest water from jumping into water just from the impact even if it’s rated for much deeper. I’ve heard of 100m watches getting water inside from cliff jumping and stuff. 100m is fine for swimming but I like the extra security of 200m for cliff jumping.
Excellent video! I've become a defender of the 5KX. In fact, I've owned quite a few "high end" divers (to include some Seiko SLA models), yet I find that the 5KX delivers a lot of value for what you can find them for. The case design is SO appealing, the build quality is solid, the classic SKX dial design is gorgeous and as you demonstrated, they look great on a variety of straps (to include natos which I exclusively wear). I bought the "gunmetal" reference for $159 all in and the enjoyment I get out of it is FAR more than the price would suggest. Oh, and I've taken my DressKX snorkeling and the 100m push/pull crown held up just fine. 😁
I’ve purchased 5 SRPD models and modding them to higher specs is fun and satisfying. The dials and case are what make this watch great. Great video. Nice t-shirt, I have a few.
Great video. I own an SRPD 55 for almost 2 years. I wanted a seiko 5 for a long time, but they all have weird specs. 37mm cases, 17 or 19mm lug width. Also poor water resistance of only 30m. I own an Skx 009 for 5 years now, and a lot of 22mm straps. So a black dial ‘5kx’ was the way to go. Case specs are the same. 100m WR is great for everyday carry. The only ‘bad’ thing are the spring bars. They are so thin, and you can’t swap them out with the fat spring bars, like on the Skx. It was my most worn watch in 2022. Sorry for the long post, but videos like this just make me realise how much I love this watch.
I own the 5KX Hulk and actually wore it out today. It’s a great watch I picked up for $200. I also own 3 Seiko Samurai’s , 1 Sumo and a Presage Cocktail Time. My Samurai’s have all been in the ocean for snorkeling/ diving as I live in Florida and are great fun with zero issues.
Affordable automatic watch = *Invicta Pro Diver* I'm a watch newb and bought an automatic Invicta Pro Diver 8928OB for $40 on Amazon (U.S.) last year. It was a rare sale but even regular pricing for the Pro Diver is around $70. Way cheaper than the others and the quality is amazing. The only downside is the weak lume: it doesn't last long but, to me, that doesn't matter much. I EDC multiple ways to light up the night (flashlights) and also I wear a digital watch at the same time, so no problem for me. ☺️
Great video Dave! I picked up a 5KX for a mod project. I went with the SRPD57 (black dial/gilt hands & i indices) because it was the least expensive. I was pleasantly surprised by how nice it was in person. At $175 it was a steal. Was almost a shame to pull it apart for me project
Dave, I think you give compelling reasons for putting the 5KX as a possible first automatic new watch. It tackles some of the old Seiko 5 shortcomings. I think there are more Orient models that could give the 5KX a run for the money, but not everyone likes Orient (I do, but acknowledge that I’m in the minority). Great video, thanks!!
Seiko is sadly a bit overpriced at the moment. For about 200€ you could get a real diver with history to the italian Navy and a sapphire crystal. Yes it's the well known Citizen Promaster ☺️ but everyone can wear whatever pleases them. Even on the Samurai they do not offer you a sapphire crystal, and in that price range it is simply a punch in the face.

@@kiathaolee5040 yeah it is not very light, depends what you prefer. Also I have not seen the sapphire crystal under the 44mm version but which wears like a 42mm in my eyes. Awesome review. thanks man.
The Islander from the Long Island Watch Company is arguably the true spiritual successor to the SKX. An exact clone of its shape and dimensions, fully compatible with all SKX bands and mod parts, but with higher quality materials (sapphire glass, etc) and a variety of striking dials, including the legendary 'Pogue' colourway.

Nice video Dave. Despite having quite a few Seiko's including an SKX007 I went ahead and bought SRPD51K, the blue version on a nice Nato strap and I must admit despite the lower wr rating, it's a nicer looking watch than my SKXin terms of finishing and dial. I do dive myself but of course don't use the SRPD as a dive computer back up, but I don't use my SKX anymore either. My backups are Prospex watches, an Orient Mako XL, and maybe surprising for some a Steeldive Tuna homage and Heimdallr Monster, both of which can do what they say on the dial and are good enough for scuba diving with strong lume and good build quality. I definitely recommend the 5KX for people who want a comfortable reliable stylish watch with a modern movement that's a real strap monster and a huge variety of styles to suit many people.
I think it's all good about the 5kxs. How many people are actual professional scuba divers and want to wear a mechanical watch down there?
I purchased a Ratio II diver right at $100. Excellent lume, domed sapphire, NH36A. Good quality and everything aligns. Hard to beat that value.
Nice review Dave👍
Thanks Dave! For me the SRP777/SPRE93 comes close to being the spiritual successor to the SKX. I appreciate that the two watches co-existed for a few years, but the new Turtles seem to have really captured that same SKX spirit.

And you can find those Turtles for great prices too (under $300 used). I agree. That's a great option if you want a certified diver "successor" to the SKX.
Funny in the suggested videos, there's a previous video about how the Orient Kamasu is the best beginner automatic. There are differences and advantages of each, but really they're both great options and one can't go wrong either way.

I absolutely loveeee my SRPD53 it's the blue dial pepsi bezel and it was my first automatic watch. No complaints whatsoever however a screw down crown would've been nice. I will say the skx jubilee bracelet looked amazing and I'm glad it's back with the seiko 5 gmts
Got steeldive on 11.11 sale, what a gem, one the best things for the buck i'v ever bought.
I don't dive, and I imagine the majority of 5KX detractors don't, either. I get that the reduction in performance compared to the SKX rankles, but from a practical performance standpoint, the difference would be invisible to most users. I have my own small quibbles with the watch, mostly on aesthetic lines, but I still think it's a terrific timepiece that delivers style, quality, performance, and value. I've obtained two for right around $200 each (one was a present for a friend), so the price was right, and I've seen some go for less, depending on the model. My SRPD59 (5KX orange dial) and SRPG59 (Save Antarctica Baby Tuna) are the pinnacles of my budget-conscious collection, and I'm very happy with them.
Spot on assessment. I'd go for the GMT over the three hander. That at least explains the water rating.
Thank you. This video helped me a lot. 🇹🇷
I've recently had the opportunity to buy a brand new, old stock / unused in the box with papers a Seiko V158-OASO day date Solar. Beautiful watch, love it. $100

Personally, I agree with the Dress-KX sentiment. Essentially the same watch as the 5KX but much more versatility for everyday wear. Good observation.
Personally I think the best options from Seiko for a first auto are the 40mm SRPH or SRPG Seiko 5 field watches. I’m very interested to get my hands on the new 36mm field watch release from Seiko also!!
Dave, loved the video. I have a 5kx and I like it. Don’t like the push pull crown and 100m WR.
I’d recommend someone get the Orient Kamasu or baby triton. Their sapphire glass hurls them above the 5KX. And their indices have both a unique look or a more standard diver look; whichever you prefer.
I'm wearing the smaller 38mm SRPK31 as we speak. I was apprehensive at first about getting it because of the lack of ISO 6425 rating (I also own the SRPE93 Turtle), but now that I have it, it's really a best value for an everyday wear desk diver, and the cream dial looks fantastic.
With all honesty, for $200 or slightly less i would rather take the superior Orient Kamasu I or II. The 5KX is a good watch, but Orient offers more for the money and it's hard to shake that perception off. If the 5KX stayed properly at the $150 mark i would say nothing, but i rarely see options below $190 - and in the $160 mark Orient keeps competition with the Ray II and Mako II (which will receive a III generation this year). Considering only Seiko, i believe that saving more to get a Turtle is a better decision.
A solid option, I think the best part of these 5kx's is the 4r35 movement, solid and will run for a good time
I went with this watch as my first automatic and don't regret my decision. I wanted a recognizable name brand and was ok with sacrificing features to even the orient because of that.
Great review Dave. Very fair. BTW - Uncle Seiko Straps is now know as "Uncle Straps." Not sure if that was a copyright issue or....
All 3 are nice looking watches for sure. Seiko can sell the limited edition for whatever price they want but the other two watches seem a little expensive to me.
I own a Seiko 5 Sports Suits with a black dial and a Milanese strap and wear it a lot in spring and summer 😎
I love my 5KX. I purchased it little after the Moonswatch came out. No offense to the Swatch lovers, but I was so unimpressed by what I think is an Omega-endorsed plastic piece for $260 that I decided to use that money to buy the 5KX and the Pagani Design's Speedmaster homage. One of the best purchases I've done.
Very nice! ⌚
My first seiko was a happy feet monster. I was contemplating about the second. I decided to pay more and get the king samurai black series. It is the king of kings.. 🙂

I’m curious if Orient will come out with something cool 😎 this year ?
I think all these watches are good. Just get the one you personally prefer the look of. I have the Kamasu and it's great, but I think I'd be happy with a Seiko just as well. I've gone off the Aliexpress watches. I have begun to value some recognisable brand in my watch choices.
Got a SRPD57K1 for $200 flat. Not really complaining about the 10bar rating. Other than that, I think it’s great.
I agree an Orient including sapphire would be a better option.
I always wonder if I do daily winding will it compromise the water resistant capability given it is push-pull crown.
Hi, I've been looking for a first automatic watch for a little bit now, a few weeks or so. I'm wondering why you changed from the Orient Kamasu as your recommended starter automatic? I get that you can upgrade the crystal and things like that later on the 5kx, but the Kamasu has that sapphire crystal already and it seems such a good option and has been recommended by pretty much every watch channel I've checked out at some point, so I don't think there will be an issue of aftermarket support in the future. The Kamasu just seems like a much better starting point as long as you find the style to your liking. So if you see this, I would really appreciate if you can expand on this area a little bit more than you did in the video. Thanks!
The gunmetal gray is the only one that interests me. 😂
the ”5KX" would be more a replacement for the" sea urchin" SNZF17,and various other similar divers style Seiko 5 sports models which had 100M WR and push/pull crowns.the SKX wasn't part the Seiko 5 sports line up as far as I know.
Am confused over the comparison 🤪..! But the name Seiko 5kx.carries the day.. Status symbol really nice ❤️ 🤙🔥

Are seiko turtle mini watches fit n are comfortable Usually 41mm size fits perfect on my wrist
Great video! I wanted a beater watch a few years back, and I was considering a SKX. I watched enough videos about the SKX, I ended up with a Orient Ray 2, thinking I could always get an SKX on sale, which they always seemed to go for but I always missed. Well flash forward to recent years, SKX is gone, and all watch prices have went up in the budget range. It also doesn't help that I live in Canada, and we have very few distributors, if any, in the country. I've been looking at Timex and Swatches more recently, as they do distribute in Canada, so not having import duties is nice. Either this or I've been looking at brands that ship directly. It's very difficult to get any automatic watch for under 150/200 USD in Canada, after shipping, taxes and import duties. However it's prodded me to look into high end luxury brands, as the AD pricing hasn't actually gone up for many brands, like Tudor. When entry level watches start to all look like 350--700 USD in my country, I have to really look at my alternatives.

At least in photos and videos the 5KX doesn't capture the beauty of the SKX. The SKX is without a doubt a tool watch first, and a well considered tool watch at that. This consideration carries into a great functional design language that has always impressed me. The small touches such as silver surrounds on the indices of the 5KX are "better" but I think it ruins the perfect balance of design they nailed so well in the SKX. Maybe in person the new ones would grow on me, but I have always been more drawn to the utilitarianist rugged charm of the SKX.

I have both Caleb! I commented elsewhere here. I can understand your sentiment but hand on heart and in reality, the looks, dial, hands of the 5KX is far more attractive and refined than my well used and well loved SKX007. If a person new to watches saw both of them together and doesn't care about scuba diving, in my opinion they would gravitate to the SRPD range.
Check out the new Sugess Air command homage
As an owner of many older prospex watches that were purchased for a similar price, I find the lack of screw down crown to be a big negative. I find these watches to not be diving watches, but rather diving-style watches.
Nice video. How long before folks start referring to Orient as "the Tudor of Japan."
San Martin is the best starting point.
Hey can you review casio ft 500w pls
All of my Seiko turtles are misaligned but i still like the turtle more than any other watch. I don't like the samurai because of the crown digging into my wrist. the turtle is much more comfortable for all day hard work.
Do yourself a favor and get the Dress-KX for slightly less money as well as an Orient Kamasu down the line, maybe 1 to 2 paychecks later if you wanna keep a clean conscience moneywise.
I have one sitting in the box never used 😅
I don't dive but swim at the beach every weekend in the summer and use the rotating bezel to time various activities. My summer beach beater is the Casio Duro. For $50 bucks you can't beat it. Forgive the pun. Seiko generally makes reliable watches but they have become overpriced IMO.
One of my friends mentioned she was looking at a few different TIMEX watches and I immediately suggested Seiko and Citizen as better value for the money. I see the move to 4R35/36 movements in their entry level lineup as a 'great leap forward' for Seiko. The 7S26 has a lot of good points- long term reliability and durability being at the front. I'm as sure of anything that the '4R' movements will be as good as the old ones, with all the additional benefit of being able to accurately synch time. I still get them going with a shake though!
Whenever I buy a seiko online, I always order bracelet or a strap with it.
Good review, BUT: that bracelet is definitely of "hollow-link" construction, and a bit below-average for Seiko, since the seams are rather obvious; I'd toss it in a heartbeat.
At very beginning, I thought the decision of replacing SKX by 5KX was stupid. But since then they provided such a wide range of selection on dials, hands, it becomes a great thing.
Love ❤️ my Coke 5KX.

i own the SSK005 and it wears really well on my 5.5 inch wrist. I do wonder if it doesn't just make more sense to pick up one of the GMT SSK models given they're only a bit more (or in my case, i picked it up for just £25 more than the average RRP for a non GMT 5). Factor in that the SSKs get a jubilee style bracelet with solid end links and solid bracelet links without that seam, it feels like the more value for money proposition. The up/downside might be the fricton fit bezel, but I say up/downside because given Seiko's alignment issues it's one less thing to be misaligned.

I have the Seiko SRPD and Orient Kamasu. Both are great watches!
Not a fan I don't like the crown guards hard to wind.
I really don't like where Seiko is now. I loved the affordable tool watches, but they don't have this anymore. This is not a dive watch and there are many options at this price with 100m. And their divers are so expensive now. For 300 euro you can get phoibos with the gmt movement(which seiko produces) sapphire and ceramic bezel... Same as the price in eu for the 5kx.
👍🏻
I really like the design but can't stand the crown at 4 o'clock.
Before they said it's overpriced. Last time I checked, everything gone up in price. Now the Seiko 5 line up is now considered affordable? How ironic.
I don’t like Seiko recommendation for budding watch collectors… In my opinion, they turned the best entry level dive watch into a ‘dive style’ fashion watch… The Kamasu Is my number one recommendation. I have 2. SKX’s. 1 5KX, and 2 Kamasu’s….
I'm willing to bet that most people who wear dive watches, don't actually go diving
Amazon has an Orient Kamasu for $206…a much better watch for less money IMO.
I think you slightly misunderstand water resistance. That certification relates to scuba diving and that's not a big test for water resistance. You're more likely to exceed 10 atms at the surface with a high impact activity than at depth, esp if diving with air tanks. That said however I bet the 100m rating is extremely modest and the big difference in this regard is they're no longer certified, which we all know no watch really needs anyway. To suggest proper divers would ever rely on a watch has been fiction for over a generation and I can promise anyone that any newish Seiko dive style watch will be watertight if they take it scuba diving.
The bracelet is folded metal
I agree Seiko being overpriced. As a matter of fact, every watchmaker that used to be reasonably priced, unfortunately is over priced. Citizen, Bulova, etc.
The watch doesnt say 'made in japan'. Are these made in Malasyia or China?
