🔺 Our Mission 🔺
Founded in 1997 in Cedar City Utah, we are a 501c3 non-profit organization dedicated to wildlife rescue, rehabilitation and education.
Rescue, Rehabilitate and Release
The Southwest Wildlife Foundation of Utah (SWF) cares for more than 100 sick, injured and orphaned native wildlife annually. Restoring them to health and returning them to the wild is our primary goal.
Informing, Educating and Inspiring
The SWF provides over 100 educational programs reaching over 30,000 people annually. We believe providing educational outreach programs to schools, scout groups and community events, with focus on children and families, will make the greatest impact in preserving our wildlife, the environment, our public lands and our resources for future generations to enjoy.
Martin Tyner
Since age twelve, with a bird on his arm, Martin has captivated audiences sharing his knowledge and experience of his wildlife friends.
At age nineteen, Martin was hired as curator of birds of prey at Busch Gardens, CA. He also worked in the movie and television industry training big cats, elephants, primates, sea mammals and raptors.
“One of my greatest childhood fantasies was the desire to create a personal friendship with a wild eagle. I found myself with a love and fascination for these powerful creatures.”
Martin Tyner is a federally licensed falconer, eagle falconer, wildlife rehabilitator, wildlife propagator, and wildlife and environmental educator.
He has been providing wildlife and environmental programs throughout the western United States, to schools, scouts and community groups for over fifty years.
“Grandpa believed in a very simple philosophy; that a person should get up every morning and do good. Doing good means that you do well for others and doing well means that you do good for yourself. There is nothing wrong with doing well, but Grandpa always believed in doing good.”
Martin's book, Healer of Angels, reflects back on his life: from a young boy terrified of birds to becoming the first man in North America licensed to train a wild golden eagle in the ancient art of falconry.
Through a heartwarming collection of true stories he describes his challenging transformation from a shy dyslexic teenager, to the founder and CEO of the Southwest Wildlife Foundation.

I've always watched birds, but I pay special attention to birds of prey now. We don't have a lot, but some small hawks, a few buzzards, owls and some small falcons. Thank you Martin and Susan (and everyone else working behind the scenes) for educating me and for educating everyone about birds. A bit late but all the best wishes for the new year. May you hearts be happy and your bellies full. May your pillow always be cool at night. Love from The Netherlands

I love how Scout was happy to see Martin. I think many people don't know how to identify immature eagles. Especially bald eagles. I had to take a class before I could help with the state eagle count every year. I really learned a lot about identifying birds of prey in the class. We had to pass a test before we were allowed to go count.

Mr. and Mrs. Tyner, I really like this film! You gave us a little bit of everything. I love raptors, and the education is so beneficial as well as your advocacy. I enjoyed your info about the red tailed hawk. Both of you are such ideal role models, and one can see that you love what you do everyday. Scout and Belle and so beautiful and socialized. The little hummer had a life saver! I do look up and always look for birds! It's fun to identify them. I know that you are terribly busy, and this edited film is so well done. I admire, respect and value you both and all the team members that help and sponsor. It's like a gift to view this. I do know that you have educated many people about raptors about their value, etc. The history about the ranch is especially interesting. I love knowing historical details, places to visit, etc. I do feel sad that the water was diverted by humans, and the wetlands dried up. Humans and progress don't always foster wildlife. I do believe that we should have native habitats for all species. This has been my philosophy all my life, but I am not popular with land developers. I do appreciate the work that you two do everyday, 24/7 for all animals. Thank goodness and blessing always for you both. Words really cannot describe how much I thank you. Warmest Regards!

Thank you Carol Ann, we are so glad you enjoyed this film. We feel sad too that so much habitat is lost to development. We all need to be mindful of the choices we make and choose good and pay it forward whenever the opportunity presents itself. We all need to give dg a big thanks as she is the one who takes the time to review everything we video, the good and the boring, and selects the best to provide education in a fun and entertaining way. Thank you Critter Webgeek for all the time and passion you put into helping educating others with your creative editing skills and social media talents.

I used to work at a little department store (Dollar General) and we had a humming bird that got in the store one day. It flew around the store so long that day and was so exhausted that a customer was able to go up to it and catch it. I know they took it outside and released it. It probably needed more than just a release but don't know any particulars that happened with it. Just thought that was so odd.

We are so glad to hear the little hummingbird was finally caught and taken outside and released. It if was still able to fly, its best chance to survive was getting back out where it could find food and water and a safe place to rest. Thank you, Mary, for watching and sharing your story.

I have a q&a question if that's ok. Bald eagles were an endangered species, they are seemingly thriving now. Why should they still be protected? It's not so much a question from me, but more that I don't know how to answer if people ask about it

  • @susantyner4525

    @susantyner4525

    Жыл бұрын

Most people understand that the bald eagle was protected because it was an endangered species. Thats only partly true. Both the bald eagle and the golden eagle are protected under the federal eagle act which is protection above and beyond the endangered species act. Once the bald eagle population was sufficiently recovered to be able to be remove them from the endangered species act, it does nothing to remove its protection from the federal eagle act. All birds of prey, including bald eagles and golden eagles are protected under the migratory bird treaty act, signed by the USA, Mexico and Canada to give all raptors protection as they migrate from Canada, through the United States and down through Mexico. Most countries from around the world recognize that birds of prey are an extremely important indicator species. They are able to help us identify threats to our environment. All birds of prey are at the top of the food chain and we as humans are at the top of the food chain. Whatever in the environment that affects them badly will eventually affect us badly. This is why we monitor all migratory wildlife, especially birds of prey.

@@susantyner4525 Oh wow thank you for explaining that to such extent. I figured all sorts of reasons in my head, but didn't know why, really. I have no idea if we (in The Netherlands) have such laws but I'm going to look into that in the next couple of weeks. I didn't know about the migratory bird act either. Now that I do I'm glad it exists. I'll be doing some more research on that too, it's very interesting. Thank you again for replying and also thank you for giving me something to work with when other people ask me why bald eagles (and other species) should still be protected

@@susantyner4525 I've been reading into this a bit, we have the zeearend /loosely translated sea eagle, Haliaeetus albicilla/ and it's a protected native species. All native birds are protected species in The Netherlands. I think several migratory birds are as well, but I need to do a bit more reading to be entirely sure. Your channel got me into paying more attention, but your last reply had me reading and learning more about birds, native species, migratory birds and how important they are. Thank you Susan (and Martin and everyone behind the scenes) Edited my comment because there was a line through the sentence that now put between backslashes
