Longplayer Is a Symphony That Will Play for a Thousand Years
Can you imagine what the world will be like in 1,000 years? Yeah, neither can we. But one man has created a piece of music that will still be playing by the end of the next millennium. Composer Jem Finer was always intrigued by the concept of time. So in the year 2000, he decided to commemorate the new millennium by writing “Longplayer”-an everlasting piece of music that repeats every 1,000 years (longplayer.org/). While Finer won't be around in 2999 when the symphony resets, his hope is that it will unite a community of listeners across generations-all connected by the soothing sounds of singing bowls.

To all those in 2999 looking this up, I hope we found peace and love because 2020 seemed like the downfall.

I think I figured it out. It's six pre-recorded tracks of about 20 minutes each of Tibetan singing bowls ringing out. Each track is playing simultaneously but in a different position. Every two minutes, per an algorithm, each track changes position slightly in it's track/duration but designed in a way that there's no interruption in the whole song. This means, the composition will sound different up until the 1000 year mark where it will repeat from the beginning where it started on the 31 Dec 12pm Noon GMT, if that makes any sense. It's not live singing bowls. And it's not even really an art piece about music. It's an art piece about time.

Maybe I missed something. Do the bowls play themselves by being in that space or something?
@Go3tt3rbot3

For the Moment its just a livestream. They are researching a way to play it but for them moment, what you see is just a storage for the bowls. >>At present, the mechanical model being pursued is based on the “record player” analogy for Longplayer. Research is ongoing into the design of a Longplayer device consisting of six two-armed turntables, each of a sufficient size to incorporate controlling mechanisms capable of raising, lowering and advancing the arms with adequate precision. This will probably mean building turntables much bigger than the conventional 12 inch - maybe 6 to 12 feet in diameter. This then begs the question as to how records of that size are to be cut, and from what material.

Who's playing it? Does someone have to be there for a thousand years? Does it actually make any sound? What's the computer for? Why didn't he explain any of this?
@RealMadTime

The computer is used to Synthesise it, so it automatic, noone needs to be there
this video left me with more questions than answers. how are they being played? is it automatic? whats up with the computer? why didn't we get to hear a sample of it in the video?
Things you may not know: Jem Finer was in The Pogues. He played on all their records, and co-wrote "Fairytale of New York" with Shane MacGowan.

Someone made a plan to make a project that will play one song that lasts one thousand years. This video makes it sound like it's currently happening, but they're still planning it. I was confused too.

Do we ever actually hear the "long player" in this video? What does it sound like? And what's driving it that wont' run out before 1000 years?
I can tell that, this man has a really hard time with letting things go. i'm the same way, he's just more extreme.
I saw this on tv and this installation is misleading. It was implied that the installation was autonomous and that the bowls were being played by a computer program via some mechanical means. however the bowls are just on display and what we are actually hearing is a short looped recording.
Woah
You may be just playing a tune for an another species in our universe that has a wider time dilatation then our own. ;O)-
what if the power goes out?
at what minute is the symphony played ?
is it on spotify
There is no end for music
So is this song stored on a computer or is it actually player by some mechanical machine for 1000 years?
I'll be long gone before this will be made available to be downloaded from the Internet
I can’t decide whether this is inspired genius or simplistic pretentiousness. It’s the same conundrum about that 4’33” - John Cage thing that’s just four minutes and thirty-three seconds of silence.
He and John Cage's organ would make a good orchestra.
iTunes?
yeah
So what IS the actual piece? How many parts? How many bowls? How long's each part? How long before the next part comes in out of phase with the first? How long before the part after that comes in? Why is it a thousand years? Why not twelve hundred years? I know as much about the piece at the end as I did at the start of the clip.
