Longplay: Duke Nukem - Episode 2: "Mission: Moonbase" (1991) [MS-DOS]

Ойындар

When we last saw Duke he had just barely survived an encounter with Dr. Proton. Somehow, Duke managed to penetrate Proton's captured city, beat his Techbot guards, and forced Proton to flee to his moonbade. Using Dr. Proton's time transport machine, Duke has decided to chase him to th moon, and stop him cold... (Well, at least that's the plan!)
The main objective of the game is to get to the exit of each level, while destroying enemies and collecting points. Many objects onscreen can be shot including boxes, obstacles and blocks. Besides points, some collectibles include health powerups, gun powerups, and some inventory items with special abilities. The final level of each episode has no exit, and is instead completed by finding and defeating Dr. Proton.
At the end of every level (with the exception of the last level in each episode), the player can receive up to seven 10,000 point bonuses, earned by making certain achievements in the level, such as destroying all cameras.
Duke Nukem (sometimes referred to as Duke Nukum) is a 2D platform game developed and published by Apogee Software (now 3D Realms), featuring the adventures of the fictional character Duke Nukem.
Duke Nukem was followed by Duke Nukem II in 1993, featuring the same hero still without the dark sunglasses, and later Duke Nukem 3D in 1996. A third sequel, Duke Nukem Forever, was announced in 1997. Plagued by various developmental problems and delays, the game would later be picked up by Gearbox Software and released in 2011, fourteen years after the game was announced and twenty years after the first game was released. In a downloadable content (DLC) for that game, titled "The Doctor Who Cloned Me", Dr. Proton made his return.

    Back to 90's, Duke Nukem was not popular as Doom in China, but it did has its fanbase.

    When I saw that neat reflecting pool effect in episode 1 I wondered why it wasn't used in Cosmo Cosmic Adventure, and now I see that it glitches out near the top of the screen, trying to reflect things beyond the view area border (which it also reflects) so I can imagine that seeming like a particularly bad idea in a game with more jumping and less shooting.

    I know exactly what you mean. Though, besides that out of bounds reflection glitch the effect works quite good. I talked about this in my DN1 review too!

    @@Dosgamert yes! I do like the effect, but it seems like the sort of thing that "quality assurance" would want gone if it didn't work in 100% of observable circumstances. Admittedly I rarely look at reviews! I already know about the game, I just never finished it and doubted I ever would, but watching other people finish old games helps me stay focused on busy-work illustrating tasks. I also watched a bunch of your blake stone videos a few years back.

    @@Dosgamert Heyo, quick question if you don't mind! Do you recommend I should go through the PC version of Duke Nukem II or the Game Boy Color version? Is there a canon version or is it anybody's guess? Wouldn't mind going through both of them if it's worth it, so yeah, I was curious, what do you think?

  • @Dosgamert

    @Dosgamert

    Жыл бұрын

    @@KOTSOSMC2002 I played both and they're both on my channel. Though, I do prefer the MS-Dos version since that's way more solid, easier to navigate and simply the one I grew up with. If you want to go for a more modern experience I can advise you to play Duke 2 on Rigel Engine, which supports higher resolutions and uncapped framerates (smooth instead of choppy 12fps).
