Duke Nukem 1+2 Remastered 30 Years Later! Evercade Collection Review
Ойындар
It's December! And while that usually means Christmas LGR things, these two Duke Nukem Evercade Collection cartridges were just released and there was no way I was gonna miss out on covering remasters of some of my favorite games. Especially since I got to be involved in their creation, just a little bit at least!

A correction to 07:15 - Mr. Paddock composed _the MIDI soundtrack_ for Prodeus that can be selected in-game as an alternative to Andrew Hulshult's OST www.jamespaddockmusic.com/2021/04/15/new-album-30in30-5-released-2/ Apologies to Andrew for the mix-up and I give him full permission to give me crap about it next time we hang out 😄

Can Duke Nukem II on Evercade have both Soundblaster and Adlib effects selected? The DOS version is the only game I've ever seen that can do that. It makes the sound effects "fatter and richer" than either AdLib or Soundblaster alone.

Really good stuff LGR. That large screen experience seem nifty. Glad you enjoyed these epic remasters. Chrismaas..
Thanks again for your invaluable feedback during development Clint, and for reviewing the games on your channel! It was a really fun project, and I hope some of the passion we put into Duke 1&2 shines through. It's still a bit surreal for me sometimes how my little hobby project has lead to working on an actual official Duke Nukem release!

Sincerely my pleasure, Niko! The passion was clear from day one, both with Rigel Engine and with all the little nitty gritty details and thought that went into these ports. I'm still happy that you were on the same page as me with how picky I was about PC speaker characteristics, haha. I hope you can continue to do similar work in the future! Perhaps even with some other shareware classics, the back catalog of Apogee and Epic is perfectly ripe, IMO.

@@scottplank1012 that's ultimately up to the RetroPie maintainers. People in the community have already created the necessary scripts and opened a PR on GitHub, but it hasn't been merged yet.

Cheers for the review, Clint! This was a really fun and exciting musical project to be a part of, especially with Lee Jackson's blessing to reimagine his DN3D music using AdLib synthesis. Here's hoping that Bobby Prince's iconic music gets saved from licensing hell eventually. Keep kickin' ass and chewing bubblegum!

Props for the excellent work here, James! I sure miss Prince's OG tracks but yours slot in quite perfectly with the early Duke vibe, I love finally having a DN1 soundtrack. It's funny, when I began talking to Blaze about the project I actually had written in my notes to recommend you as a composer since your Secret Agent HD work was so spot-on. Then when Ryan was like "we have James on-board already!" I knew this project was legit 🤘

Love your music! Is the DN1 soundtrack for sale on your site? I couldn't find it at the link Clint provided or on your bandcamp.
Gosh, those remakes of DN1 and DN2 are _gorgeous!_ I can't get over the super-smooth framerate, the helpful widescreen and the faithfulness to the originals! Those were two of MY faves back in the day as well, and I still replay them from time to time. What an honor it must have been to be a big part of it!

When I was 8, my Uncle gave me a CD with a slee of games on it (Duke 1&2 among many others). My Uncle passed away in 2006 (my mom passed away July 2023). I wish both couldve been here to see this (my mom was the first to witness me gaming as a kid). Thanks for covering these gems.
I will never not love the fact that LGR Christmas has become a full on nostalgic tradition for me.

Depending on how you look at it, it can be considered as either a glorified Rock64 or an under-powered Switch. Although i admit that with ports like these and all the legal effort put into licensing everything, at least the devs have demonstrated a lot of spirit for the thing.

I think that bit about being in the credits is the only actually humble "humble brag" I've seen all year! Way to go Clint, you deserve it!!
Duke is definitely your spirit character. I have always adored your Duke voice. This video brought to light some really cool things I never knew about. Congrats on getting to work with these guys!!
I don’t need it. I don’t need it. I don’t need it. I don’t need it…I NEEDEEEED IT NOW!!! Hail to the King baby! I can’t tell you how much this represents Duke. The passion behind the project, wanting to share it with others. These are not only some of the best Duke games, but the ones most fondly remembered and it shows. 1&2 still live rent free in my heart and are why I love 16-32 bit games to this day.
Very cool to hear you were involved! Fun video
Evercade exclusive or not, it's really awesome that these exist, and even cooler that they reached out to you to help ensure that they were the best they could possibly be. That's a nice level of dedication to see from a project like this. Also I assume you've put "Resident Duke Expert" on your business cards.
Man, that first Duke game takes me back. I used to play that on my grandfather's PC that ran on an OS called GEOS. I have to say, Watching this brings back so many memories playing these games. They did an amazing job with the remaster, and adding on the options to turn filters off like for the SFX makes it that much better. Thanks for vouching for that LGR!
Ah btw, the Duke 1 story summary is also in the DOS original - it's just buried in the help menu there. So we put it before the Duke/Proton dialog
Now let's see a Commander Keen 1 and 2 collection, awww man I love Evercade stuff :)
It's pretty rad seeing older games on physical carts in the modern day. The platform restriction is a bummer, cause I'll never have an Evercade, but I'll hold out hope for other platforms in the future.

Love the LGR/Duke sprite they made for you!
Thanks so much for this, Clint, it really means a lot to see that you've enjoyed both your involvement in the project and the final result of it all. A lot of blood, sweat and tears went into these carts from all angles: development, emulation optimisation, art and design for the inlay and manual and my own part in it all -- the editorial content of both the manual and the on-cart descriptions. We're all thrilled to finally get these into people's hands, and that folks seem to be enjoying them a lot.

This is really cool! I can't imagine how awesome it must have been for you to be able to contribute to an official Duke Nukem release!
I don't know about you, but hearing LGR do the Duke voice gives me all the holiday cheer I could want!! I still haven't played Duke 3D but at least now I have it in my library. Going to play it after I finish Blood fresh supply and Slayers X.
So many happy memories playing Duke Nukem over the years. I first played it on shareware from the demo disc included with _Computer Shopper_ magazine in 1996 then got the full game later. Duke Nukem 1 & 2 were included along with several Apogee/3D Realms demos and I played them almost as extensively as the full game. I'm glad to see the original platformers get a proper remake and it's really good that you have a contributor credit.
This is awesome Clint! As a 90s kid you totally hit me in the nostalgia feels with this video.......I never really was a fan of playing DOS games on a TV (I guess my brain is wired to have that keyboard + mouse combo with DOS Games), but seeing you play classic Duke 1 and 2 on your TV seems like a fun idea. Maybe I should look into some old school Gravis Gamepads to use. Here's hoping there is a PC release for these awesome games in the future!

Good to see Duke coming back, I've never heard of the Evercade though.
2:32 Clint's credit is before and more senior to Jon St. John, the voice of Duke. The padawan has surpassed the master.
I was gonna buy the collections anyway since I’m planning to collect every cart released for Evercade, but seeing a massive fan being so happy about how it turned out - that makes me more hyped to play them once I get them
This made me go on Amazon and look for an evercade on the first couple of minutes of the video. Good one. 👍
I am glad they have an exclusive like this, I have I love my evercades.
Immediate tidal waves of nostalgia upon seeing the Duke Nukem gameplay. Duke Nukem 1 may have been the first game I actually fully completed as a child, and I played that thing into the ground. Countless hours spent with my eyes glued to the screen and my fingers on the keyboard. Definitely a formative game in my childhood, alongside Cosmo's Cosmic Adventure, Castle of the Winds, Raptor, and Crystal Caves.
Bought an evercade just for this, and it's so worth it. Though we need a third collection with Duke GBC, Zero Hour and Manhattan Project.
@LGR
6 ай бұрын
Manhattan Project would be phenomenal to have but I've a feeling we'll need an Evercade 2.0 for such a port, considering it was a Windows XP PC game and Xbox 360 title. Quite a bit beefier than DOS and PS1 stuff.
Wow and d**n! Merry Xmas!! I'm glad you got to work on one of your passion!
