Long tree short ladder? Tips using an Alaskan

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Tips and tricks when using the Granberg Alaskan Chain saw mill.
What do you do when the tree you want to mill is longer than your set of guide rails? Well you could spend $400 on another set of proprietary guide rails or you could just use an old aluminium ladder and a bit of builders string.
This method will give you a perfectly level cut even when your rails are much shorter than the tree you want to mill.

The saw drifting down under its own weight after he's moved the ladder is an illustration of why it's so convenient to drop a tree on a slope. Set up the cut as the trunk lays, and let gravity help do the work.

Ya the slope really helps reduce the effort required! Thanks for sharing

Good video, thanks. Question: when you have to move, wouldn't it be easier to unhitch the ladder from the supports you spent so much time fine-tuning? Leave them in place and then just slide the ladder down to the end? Maybe there was something about the way it's all connected up that I'm missing.

The log gets significantly fatter at the base compared to the crown so I had to readjust the nuts anyway. I am going to change the adjustable screws for bolts in tee nuts. That means I can use the electric drill to adjust the height quickly. Thanks for the comment.

Is there a reason the first cut has to be level, if the guide (ladder in your case) is straight? As long is the first cut is straight, aren’t the rest of the cuts straight? Or, is there something about level that just makes it easier?

The ladder will warp mid way through from the weight of the mill and saw, especially if you are using EZ rails because they are quite wobbly. So I make sure each point along the ladder is level before screwing it down (the adjuster screws are all contacting the log) When using a string line as in this video then it is absolutely essential as you will have to move the ladder part way through the cut. NB. you don't necessarily have to have each end of the ladder the same distance from the centre of the tree but you will end up with a wedge shaped remnant at the end and waste more wood. Thanks for the thought provoking question.
