Hi Coach, please advise me whether I should put my dominant or non-dominant foot on the last foot before jumping.

I'm not a coach, but this is what my coach has told me. For example, if you were to kick a ball you are most likely going to do it with whichever one feels comfortable. So what ever leg you would kick a ball with is not the one you should put down. This is because your dominant leg helps drive. So for me I kick a ball with my right foot so I put my food down with my left foot and drive with my right leg. Hopefully this helps.

I agree with almost everything, but I do have a few comments. I have not seen a jumper using the hitch kick that is able to get their legs straight out so they could see the bottom of their shoes prior to landing. 2. I have only seen feet marks in sand after a landing because the athlete dropped his legs down to soon, he had over rotated in the air or he had no technique. The video makes it seem that right after jump, you pull your legs up and extend them vertical so your bottom of your feet are visible (this will cause over-rotation) I think you mean to do this after apex as you are nearing the pit. Athletes have to do something In flight prior to preparing for landing (raising, extending legs). Types of Long Jumps: Hang, Glide or Sail, Hitch Kick, Half Hitch Kick I have watched a number of video’s and have witnessed as a collegiate long jumper that although your feet is the landing point, what you do with rest of your body does matter. I even watched the girl land and slide on her back a good foot or more behind her feet were it would be marked. I have witnessed some of the best in world lose inches and feet because of a portion of their body landed behind their feet. You should land compressed to your knees and be able to stand up. If you shoot forward your feet came down to soon or you over rotated. If a athlete lands flat on their butt, they failed to bring their feet down but more likely they have a technique problem. I have been a serious long jumper since 7th grade. I was only 5’4”, and the fastest 100 was 10.8, 40 yard dash time was 4.4.. I always had a uphill battle to be the best. The personal accomplishments in 1983. Yes, I am old! I jumped 23’10” which was the best Jump in Indiana until I was beat with a Indiana State Record. I went to Ball University on a full scholarship for LJ . I long jumped 25’2”. I lettered 3 years.hurt my Senior year. I eventually became a decathlete and placed 5th in MAC, in my first decathlon. I gained points in other events during dual meets which led to my focus on decathlon. HJ 6’10 ( pretty high being 5’4”), 4X100 school record, 1600-4:45, javelin 185, Triple Jump 48’10”. I received a 17 year old under study, who graduated early from HS but had jumped 23’ in high school. He worked out and trained with me. His body matured and he was able to run a 10.3 100m, and LJ 26’11 1/2” which won him the under 18 Gold medal for the United States during the Pan American Games. I had to be a technician and student of biomechanics, because of my real lack of ability and to counter my stature. It helped that I had a prior Olympic coach in Joe Rogers, and Steve Cooksey the coach at Navy and the 1st person to clear 7’ in HJ

@@22bunnies34 You did not read it right. I had the longest jump in the State, but I was beat by a Kelvin Walker that jumped 24’ 6 1/4” which was a new State record. Now, I think the Indiana State best is at 24’7 3/4”.

I made a box 8-10” high, and used that box to jump into the high jump pit work through each part of the hitch-kick. You do it until you feel confident enough to do it in the pit. If you do it before in the LJ pit before your ready, you might get hurt. Oh, use the box to train in the LJ pit when ready. I hope this helps. I have some great pics of me jumping, hit kicking, and landing. I did not have great talent so I became good by being a technical jumper.

Why do all pros twist to the side upon landing? Whats the advantage of this? And how should it be practiced? Thank you

Pros twist upon landing in the long jump to maximize their jump length by moving to the side vs falling back and maximizing the jump length. Remember the jump is measured from the closest mark in the sand to the board. Practicing involves drills for body control and plyometric exercises, focusing on core strength and flexibility.
