I'm possibly the only Londoner who always gets lost when trying to use the tube T.T so I end up taking a very long bus journey back home 🙈😂

Top tip: If you have a railcard (student/under 25, disabled, armed forces or senior), or an annual gold card, you can ask at a tube ticket office (or the customer service adviser at a station without a manned office) for them to link it to your oyster card to get a 1/3 reduction on the costs of all off peak pay-as-you-go fares and all off peak caps! When I'm in London now I save so much more money on tube fares.

Very cool video ... great for those he need to know HOW to travel of the tube... It is a great way to travel in London and I love making videos showing WHAT IT IS LIKE to travel on the London Underground. Although some people might see it as "the tube" or "the underground", it is in fact a network of very distinctive lines, all with their own history and character and this is what I attempt to appreciate in my videos.

One reason that tourists buy the paper travel cards is that there are 2 for 1 offers that are available if you buy a 7 day card from an overground rail station. It's a big money saver in the long run and allows you to see many popular sites for half price for two people. Having done that, I agree it would be so much easier and quicker to have an Oyster and just tap in and out.

I love Zone 9. It's my spiritual home. I love my Amersham, it's that one emo who is furthest away from everyone.

Hehe, I'm from Dallas and I've been to London so many times that I could move to London, and *not* be confused about anything. I have an Oyster card, and I've had it since 2007. Whenever I go to London, I check my balance on my Oyster card just to make sure I have enough. I usually do, because as soon as I arrive at Heathrow to catch my flight back home to Dallas, I top up my card with enough to raise my balance up to roughly 20 pounds for my next visit.

My tip is when leaving an underground train look immediately for the little signs with arrows that show whether you turn left or right to get to the exit or to specific other line (colour coded) - lots of signs to follow so know which line you need next. Expect about 2 minutes per stop on average if you want to estimate journey time, pretty good rule of thumb.

I think I'd add that if you can, travel with a friend who actually knows the underground (I realise that for most tourists this won't be possible) and listen to them. I'd also point people to the things not to do on the underground video you did and keep repeating the bits about not stopping by the barriers, before or after, until it sinks in. There is a saying, apparently, amongst pilots that you shouldn't let the plane take you somewhere your brain didn't reach a few minutes ago. That's also true of the tube. Before you even get within 10 metres of the entrance to the tube station you need to have your ticket, pass or card in your hand and know where you want to go. By the time you're in the station it's too late, the crowds will carry you forward and if you stop you risk being trampled.

I totally agree with this. As I am now an almost daily tube user I can assure you that some tourists suddenly stop in the most annoying places, as if they are entirely thoughtless to everyone else around them. Planning ahead is essential. This is especially true during the peak travel periods approx 7-9.30a.m. and 5-7p.m. And if you haven't planned ahead please stand to the side so that everyone else can get passed until you've worked out what you're doing. If you're lucky someone may even offer to help. Get the card / travel pass or whatever you're using to go through ticket barriers out and in your hand before you get to the barrier!!! PLEASE!!!!!

and you know what is even more interesting... I have recently travelled with my girlfriend to Barcelona and I "caught" her staying couple of times in front of the barriers looking for her ticket. the funny thing is that she is not doing it in London. I suppose she just got it as a habit here and does not even recognize it. But I said "CAUGHT" as I do videos on these subjects, try to help people with their travels and these things I see very easy. But yes, the 3 big things are *Do not block the barriers *Wait for the people to go out of the train before you board and *STAND ON THE RIGHT SIDE of the escalators especially if you have a suitcase with you

Big Ben is the name of the main bell in the clock tower, but it is a common misconception to refer to the entire clock tower as "Big Ben". The actual tower was recently renamed "The Queen Elizabeth II Clock Tower" in honour of Queen Elizabeth's diamond jubilee.

There's a subtle distinction in the Underground between the deep level Tube lines accessed by escalator eg Piccadilly, and lines just below street level eg District, usually with stairs to get to them. You're right, Tube is used in everyday speech to cover both. The Northern line sounds different from when I commuted on it - going N beyond Camden town you just have to know which branch your train is headed for, and which route it will take going S. But then it's easy for me as I grew up on Northern line territory. And congrats again on your excellent command of English - just the odd preposition not quite right (like the Americans!).

Love the tube i used the this week to the roundhouse to see Gary Numan loved the show got the tube home.

Yes, Toronto has the same problem with the overnight service. Here the lines stop around 1-1:30 and open up again around 6. (On Sundays they would open up at 9, but only recently has the TTC realized that people actually *work* on Sundays, and don't just go to church and then home again, so they now open at 8 on Sundays.) In fact, we've only had limited all-night service once in the past year, and that was for Nuit Blanche last October. Every other night, we have to use the Blue Night Network, a series of buses and streetcar routes that continue on overnight, but with a different number - my local streetcar has the route number of 5-6, but becomes 306 overnight. They usually start around 1:30-2 AM, just as the bars are about to let out...trust me, there is a reason why the 301, which runs up and down Yonge Street replacing the Yonge portion of the Yonge-University-Spadina line is known as "The vomit comet".

Hi Dave Greenlaw Greetings from London We are Blessed with a fantastic transport system in London The tubes run on most lines Friday and Saturday nights the rest of the week is needed to do repairs well when you move over four million people per day things get a bit worn but the other nights there are thousands of busses running twenty four hours you don't have to wait long and it costs £1.50 per trip so you can go one bus stop or one hundred bus stops about twelve miles for your £1.50 when you have ab Oyster Cars their is a capping so when you use £6 that is the cap for the day and you pay no more

Im from Mexico, and here the underground its much easier to use, I couldn't imagine how difficult is in other parts in Europe, anyways, I love your videos

hmmm, depends how the prices are! i think i'd just use PAYG for a month and then see how much you spent and then compare if an annual card works out cheaper or not. but if you don't use the tube daily it probably isn't worth it!

You can in fact take any National Rail train inside London with Oyster Card, so not only First Capital Connect but also Abellio or Southern or South West Trains or whatever. The only exception are afair the Heathrow Connect and Heathrow Express services.

One more tip XD Never buy 6 oyster cards on a minor tube station XD My family visited London and were staying near Tuffnell park station and we had to buy 6 oyster cards to travel. The machine broke down and apparently it can only do 5 oyster cards at a time (Machine states 10). So the personnel at Tuffnell park gave us a letter telling Leicester Square (Our destination) to give the 6th card to us when we arrive since Tuffnell park ran out. Then they let us through the large gates. The next day taking the same trip, one of the cards already ran out of money despite all of us going to the same places. We found only 4 out of 5 cards were tapped in by the personnel who helped us the previous day but we didn't know about it. My dad complained and the Leicester Square personnel were just not helpful. We tried to explain what happened on Tuffnell Park but the person replied that 'Tuffnell Park shouldn't be the one tapping in your cards for you' in a smug way :( Like thanks a lot for helping! We nearly had to pay £7 to an offense we didn't mean to do :( Good thing the head personnel still kept that piece of paper we gave them the previous day and was able to help us.

Great video. I was just being curious cos I actually live in London. As of now night tube is available on some lines at weekends only. Also the confusion with getting 1-6 travelcard May be if they’ve came to Heathrow (in zone 6). From what I’ve heard contactless payments are actually cheaper than getting an Oyster card as it works out the cheapest journey. Only only worth it if your bank doesn’t charge fees for foreign use. I’m sure you used to be able to get paper tickets for other than 1-6 but it had to include zone 1. Ex 1-2 or 1-5 etc at varying prices. Excellent tips for tourists albeit a little out of date. Maybe time to make another one 👍

Heya Jen I'm not a Londoner I'm a manc but iv a lot of family in London. The tube is the oldest underground and ine of the busiest... unfortunately it needs shit loads of maintenance. Even hair is a problem, a bad hair day for the tube... they have to de fluff the tube of hair that's just flown in the there from commuters waiting for trains. It's kinda crazy but it's very easy to use. Berlin is soooo difficult but London is easy. Iv only used the tube like 10 times or so in my life and it's so easy that I even have my favourite station... Aldwych! 😍

The only time the northern line isn't complicated is if your local station is on it like me but no matter how well you know the underground, you will never be able to change at Euston without getting confused.

Another question I have is, when Oyster was first introduced, how often were gates out of service because they were broken. Here in Toronto our tap-and-go card is called Presto, slowly being rolled out across all subway stations and on all buses and streetcars. The benefit being touted for it is that it can be used on not just the TTC, but other local transit bus systems, as well as GO Transit, our regional bus and rail system. The problem is that not a week goes by where I don't see at least one or two of the gates at my local station out of service, and it usually because people have rushed the gate as soon as they've tapped their card - or swiped their Metropass at the two lone gates that still take the card - and not wait for it to open. (Or the other way, not waiting for the sensor to register that there is someone at the gate wanting to exit, and swing the gate out.) It's gotten to the point where the TTC has had to put stickers on the gate partitions - that for some silly reason are transparent plastic - that say "Please wait for the gate to open". (And in true slow fashion, they have only done it at one station so far.)

I lived in London when Oystercards were introduced, and I don't remember this ever being much of a problem. Even now I only occasionally see a gate out of service and usually it gets fixed very quickly. A related thing I would say is that I can often tell who the tourists are in the tube stations because they wait until the gates have fully closed after the person in front has gone through before they put their oystercard on the reader, but you don't have to do that. The little light on the gate turns yellow/orange when the person in front of you taps and goes through, and then turns green before the gate closes. As soon as the light turns green the gate is ready to accept the next oystercard/contactless card/ticket, so if you time it well the gate just stays open and you can go straight through.

no need to worry about this. There are plenty of gates and if something happens to a gate (which is not a regularly thing) there are multiples gates to use:)

ok the one thing i fail to understand is how to tell what line a tube is running on, some platforms have two lines running on the same track, how do i tell if im getting on the line im supposed to be on or a different one? are the trains different, are their signs on the train? lmk

The displays will say - the trains have destination on the front + its announced over speaker what line it is. Once you get on, theres another announcement inside the train (this is a district line train to xxx). If its the wrong one you can still get off before doors close.

And it`s good to know that it`s better to get an oyster card. However, I`lll be there for a week and I plan to go visit Cambridge. What zones is Cambridge in and would I still be able to use the Oyster Card? Oh! And i am flying to Glasgow from Gatwick, I can still use the Oyster Card for that too, right? BTW, on average, how much do you think I Would spend on traveling expenses (oyster card) in London for a week?

im really confused. Oyster works within London. Neither Gatwick nor Cambridge or Glasgow are near London.. so no, Oyster obviously does not work there!!!! If you get a 1-2 travelcard for Oyster in London its about 27 quid.

If you want a true London experience, you have to take a night bus at some point during your time here. Yes it's horrific, it smells and it's loud, and there's a chance you may get embroiled in some indecorous misadventure, but if you yourself are as drunk as everybody else (this is essential, do NOT take a night bus sober) and are happy to become part of the atmosphere, it can seem like the very epicentre of humanity and joyousness.

What about if you live in Basildon or pitsea or Gray's and you are going to London they are cheaper than getting a retern to upminster and then pay for a oyster card I'm right

But some contactless cards charge for the transaction, I would recommend just getting an Oyster card

there aren't many branches central really. only northern line. you know which one to take because obviously each branch only serves certain stations so if your station is on branch A, obviously you take branch A. all the branches have different end destinations so theres no way to take a wrong train.

The touchless system sounds like it relies on RDIF. What if you do have a debit card capable of the touchless system, but want to have an Oyster card for the budget options you mentioned? Do you have to go and get one of these RDIF shield wallets or card covers? (And yes, I know, there are people out there who will scream "You need to get one anyways!", so please, you don't need to remind me again.) Or is it *very* short-range?

Yes, you can use either, but can't keep them in the same wallet. In fact, every now and again you'll hear taped warnings as you're walking through a station to "please beware of card clash", which is what I think you're alluding to. Yes, it can confuse the machine or you can even be charged twice, once on each card, so you need to tap only the one card. An effective shield for your contactless card would be useful. However, if you have a contactless card the Oystercard may not be cheaper - it depends (obviously if your bank charges fees, then using an Oystercard is the way to go, of course). The pay as you go capping system calculates your cumulative journeys every day and, on a weekly basis, every Sunday, so if you arrive in London on a Monday and are leaving the following weekend, and use the same contactless card all week, the system will refund you money on your contactless card if, during that time, you would have spent more than a weekly travelcard costs. It's a bit complicated. Getting an Oystercard is probably the best option for most people, though - with that, you can get a weekly travelcard that starts on any day of the week as well as using all the other options. Also, a major benefit of the Oystercard if you're spending any prolonged time in London is that you can set up an online account and register your card. If you then lose it or it gets stolen, you simply get yourself a new oystercard and then transfer your travelcard and/or cash balance from your previous oystercard onto the new one. I think it's a really good system, but if you are using pay as you go, you must make sure to touch in and out; if you don't touch out at the station where you leave the network, you will automatically be charged the day travelcard rate, even if you've only made one single journey all day.

The Northern line is actually pretty simple if you avoid it. Also don't ever do contactless as a foreigner as the fees can be pretty high. Just buy an Oyster.

Also now, using a contactless credit/debit card, Apple Pay etc. You still get fare capped, so theres really no reason to get an Oyster Card, or to get an Oyster card for the fare capping.

I use my con tactless debit card when visiting london - so simple, but foreigners do not have these and cannot use them

I don't know about the last one, but here is my attempt at answering the rest of your questions. Zones are a series of roughly ring shaped areas, with 1 being circular and including most of central London. Zone 2 is the next one out, and they make their way out until zone 9, which is mostly outside the Greater London area. Fees are mostly calculated by which zones you pass through, rather than which one you're in. For example, say staying in zone 1 cost £2 and staying in zone 2 cost £1. (It doesn't but for the sake of this it can.) Starting in zone 1 and ending in zone 2 would cost £3.

Or you could walk though to Waterloo East, get a SouthEastern train to London Bridge, change onto Southern trains at London Bridge and goto New Cross.

you dont need to know all the stops. Just know the one you get off, the one before so you can get ready and the destination of the train (The final stop) so you can find the correct platform. You said there was nobody. I assume you need staff. Just ask somebody. Anybody. People are usually kind:)

Yes there are hundreds of night buses well about two thousand in service during the night at weekends you only have to waite a couple of mins for a bus even at three oclock in the morning and they also get very packet people going all over the city and very cheap to ride you will have a grate time

Central and Victoria lines will have Night Tube services from 19 August 2016, then the Northern, Jubilee and Piccadilly lines will from Autumn/Fall

No idea really, I thought u can have one card for all, just like France where u can have one card and the amount of circulatiuon depends on the amount of money u charge on the card...example in Marseille u can have a one-week circulation for around 13.67 euros!

+wanderlust wernweh I see. In london you choose between pay as you go or travelcards. With travelcards you have to know beforehand with zones you want to travel through. A one week travelcard for zones 1-4 for example is about 46 pounds.. about 60 euros.

wanderlust wernweh with Oyster a single trip is usually around 2.40 pounds when you go through zone 1. a short trip is cheaper or if you avoid zone 1.

you were not clear explaining this. is there no such thing as an unlimited ride card for a zone at least? we have unlimited cards here in new york city and you can use the entire system as we don't have zones. the cards also work on buses (unlimited rides anywhere in new york and the boroughs).

Jen Dre in nyc, you pay $116 for a monthly unlimited card. you can ride any bus or train in any part of nyc or its boroughs as much as you want for 30 days.

+guest well you can't in London as there are zones so you have to buy the right travelcard. eg if you only want to travel central a zones 1-2 card. if you travel further you need to pay on top. there are all sorts of combinations of zones possible. 4-5 or 2-4 or 1-5 etc. all cost different amountsm

+guest no if you have a travelcard you don't pay per ride that's the point of having a travelcard. you just have to stay within the zones you chose.

+techfan42 well I mentioned FCC (now thameslink) which is national rail!

Adelaide, Australia has a simpler system. It's exactly the same as the London system, but without zones and you only have to tap when you get on the train/tram. The issue is though, that we don't have frequent rail services (15 - 60 mins between, 5 - 15 for trams)

Omar Alanjjar The Northern Line is Probably the most complicated line on the underground system as there are so many branches off it for example the line splits at Camden town on the south bound trains one line is Morden via Bank and the other is Kennington via Charring Cross this indicates one train is going via the City and the other is going via the west end

Night buses are a nightmare? Seriously? That's one of the best time of the day to take a bus as they travel very fast because there is no traffic at all.

I used to ride a night bus almost every night for months so it wasn't isolated

For people, who don't intent to return to London too soon, it still makes sense the purchase a travelcard in form of a paper ticket. An Oyster Card is actually only the second-best option for them.

£12.00 are not that expensive compared to £11.70 or even £10.90 for a zone 1-6 and 1-5 daily cap. And if one takes the deposit for an Oyster Card into account, which very few people reclaim afterwards, it is even cheaper to buy a paper ticket.

Flierfy I don't see why any tourist would want to travel to zone 6? That's why I don't get it. The Oyster deposit is refundable (I think there is special visitor Oyster Cards too that are 3 quid) and worth it after just a day or two of travelling. I have forgotten my Oyster at home once or twice and I spent loads more getting paper tickets, they're almost twice as expensive than Oyster fares. With contact-less and apple pay (and others) now implemented there is no need for the paper tickets anymore anyway. Looking on the TFL website now it seems they don't even sell paper-tickets for zones 1-2 anymore. Which is the only zones 95% of tourists will need. +Jen Dre Tourists don't necessarily travel to zone 6 but rather from there. The busiest airport of the region is in zone 6 after all and for car travellers it is highly recommendable to drive no further in than zone 5. Neither are contact-less payment systems as widely spread as that one could cease paper tickets entirely.

Flierfy It's good paper tickets exist and all. I just don't think they should be the #1 option for tourists. Most people stay in London for a week and an Oyster card is definitely worth it after like 2 or 3 days of travelling if you don't constantly travel out of zone 2, which I don't think people do. I fly from Heathrow all the time on Oyster and I think it charges me like 3 quid on PAYG. As Oyster is never more expensive than another form of travelling I don't see why people shouldn't use it. It's the most convenient way of getting around and can be used on cable cars, buses, riverboat, overground etc.
