Just found this. I'm hoping to do Istanbul to UK next year for my 60th birthday. Thank you so much for lots of great ideas. Your route planning sounds great building from ever friendly and easy rides in the Netherlands ending with the lesser known Greece & Turkey. However I just really like the idea of doing the annoying flight and transport at the start, cycling home, putting the bikes in the garage and turning on the kettle.

I have loved watching all of the episodes of your ride from London to Istanbul. My husband and I are planning on riding the Eurovelo 6 next year, beginning of June to the end of August, giving ourselves 3 months to complete it, with plenty of time to explore the villages, towns and cities on the way. I had been worried about accommodation on the Eastern side, but after watching your videos, I now have confidence that all will be good. Our first cycling tour was down the Rhine from Frankfurt to Amsterdam in 2015, the year after we rode from Paris airport to Amsterdam and this year we rode the 4 rivers cycle path in Sth. Korea. We never book accommodation, we just wing it and hope to find a hotel, next year will be different as we have purchased a tent :-) Look forward to watching more of your adventures on Monte and Komodo.

Hi Carolyn!! Thank you so much for the lovely message! We just woke up and read it together before work and it made us so happy :) Eurovelo 6 plans!!! So exciting! How far are you planning on going? We'd love to follow your trip, would you be posting photos or blog somewhere? We went from the source to Drobetu Severin in Romania then met the eurovelo 13 and went south. Would be interested to know how that last section through Romania to the black sea was. The whike eurovelo 6 though up until Romania was pretty well marked throughout and accommodation was easily found in campsites until Bratislava and then super cheap and easy in hotels mostly from there with the odd campsite. We just used booking.com for those. I'm very intrigued by the South Korea cycle!! I'll google it! We work in travel and have just started selling it, I'll mention it to the team! Thanks again for your lovely words and if you need any help or advide for the route just shout! Under every video I wrote where we stayed too which should help :)

On the note of new videos, as it's been just over a year since we got home we plan on making a video on a little day ride this weekend about how we feel one year on, and probably do a review of the bikes and tyres etc and also what filming kit we used (all very basic on the go stuff, no laptop etc!)

@@MatHall Hi Matt, My husband and I are planning on riding the entire Eurovelo 6 from Nantes to Constanza. I actually want to start right at the Atlantic and dip my wheels in the ocean and dip them in the Black Sea at the end :-) I will be posting on FB. In regards to the 4 Rivers ride in Sth Korea, it was fabulous, the signage is brilliant and easy to follow, plenty of places to stay, most of the hotels we stayed in allowed us to take our bikes in the rooms. The path is mainly shared between cyclists and pedestrians, not a lot of riding on the road and when we did the drivers were very good. We even encountered a man in a van driving along the road next to the path, he was handing out cards for accommodation. We were probably 3 kms from the town and he appears driving slowly next to us, he stayed with us and took us right to the hotel. There are camp sites everywhere. It's not a long ride 633kms from Seoul to Busan, we took 9 days, some people have done it in 4, we liked to stop mid arvo and have a look around. Food was delicious, except for the offal, we didn't know what we were ordering. As for the Sth Korean people, so, so helpful and ready to offer help, a very safe country to ride in.

A bit of a coincidence this popping up because at this minute in time I am planning our cycle trip down the Danube for September 2020 our first ever such journey. We had been planning to avail of one of those companies that does everything for you - transfer of luggage between stops etc but having viewed your epic journey numerous times we decided that "winging it" would be much more of an adventure. We have been reading Harriet's blog which is both informative and humorous as a guide along with your vlogs. So in ending all the very best for the big day and hopefully in the near future we can sit back in the comfort of our favourite chair and watch as you both take on another exciting bike adventure

So you are going to cycle the Danube next September? What part are you planning? We saw various group cycle or assisted tours and they still looked so fun but yes I think the adventure of winging it.. you won't regret it! It's so easy to pack panniers and find accommodation. And go at your own pace. It's the best thing we've ever done

  • @MatHall

Hi Ross thanks for watching! London to Athens would be unbelievable. 6 weeks would be pretty rapid but certainly doable if you go some. We stopped for at least 1 day off per week in a point of interest, usually a main city and had a hostel night or cheap hotel later on. Was the best idea as it gives your body a rest and builds the excitement back up to get cycling again. I'd really recommend that! I guess a few things we bought en route would help.. we didnt think about it before we left. We bought a tarpaulin, which was really good as a quick to put up addition to our tent, giving us shelter from hot sun and a dry area to cook in when it rained. This was great! You'll see it in the Danube videos eurovelo 6 and 13. Buy some amazing wax earplugs! I got some half way and it helped me so so much, I didnt get much sleep until Austria!

Bike kit, we just went rear panniers and bar bag. This is fine if 2 people cycle to share the load but you will defo need 2 from panniers too unless you go super light. It was a great idea to have waterproof trekking trainers instead of cycle cleats. We spent some of our best times walking off the bike. Invest in the best camping mat you can too... sleep is so important! Learn some basics for cycle repair but honestly that's all you need, even in remote Europe you can find someone to help you. We chose to take nothing but spare inner tubes, and we didnt even get 1 puncture with a combine 10,000km ... get good tyres! Marathon Plus

I don't know how much cycle touring you have done on a loaded touring bike, but cycling London to Athens in 6 weeks is a pretty tall order. What sort of mileage were you thinking of riding each day? Indeed how much long distance cycling you have done in general and how far and frequently you normally cycle? How good are you at climbing hills and mountains? What route are you going to take as you could save a shed load of cycling by riding down to Brindisi on the heel of Italy on the east coast then get a boat to Greece either Igoumenitsa or Patras?

Hi Patryk, very exciting plan you have!! Will you head north to join the eurovelo 6? The first 4 or 5 days we had sore knees and a sore bum but no saddle sores. You may already know wearing padded cycle shorts only, is the best way to avoid sores. So no underwear! And keep them clean, so we washed them every few days and dried at the campsite. The brooks saddles were only approx 100km used before we left, so yes they were still hard! But after another few weeks riding average 70km a day they became very comfortable and we had no problems at all. I hope that helps!!! Will you document your trip with photos or video?

Hey Marek, we both had entry level touring bikes. Me Fuji Touring 2017, and Harriet Dawes Karakum. Did a great job. Still no punctures in 8000km.... ! Tyres Schwalbe marathon :)
