London to Amsterdam | Bikes for £90 | Cycling 500km in 4 days |

Here is our short story, we bought two cheap bikes. We rode them from London Paddington to Amsterdam and around the Netherlands. It was the first such trip for us. We had amazing time. Definitely recommend to everyone. Best Regards ‪@BARN2ROAD‬

Yeah most people stop for bicycles on roundabouts but it's normal for bike riders to put out a hand to direct where they are going. So cars will not be unnecessary waiting

So much fun! And thanks so much for showing us that reusing/recycling, giving life to older bikes is perfectly ok. It’s too easy to get caught up in the “buy all the new gear” vibe when you start a new hobby. Old is good!!! Thank you for sharing your adventures. You have a new subscriber ❤

Older bikes dont look out of place at all in the Netherlands. Many people have older racing bikes from the 90s, 80s, some 70s bikes even! I proudly ride around on a bike I inherited from my grandfather. Those old steel frames dont rust and they are very sturdy. You'd break a bone before you break anything else hahaha

As a french who fixes old bikes like those, your video proves that those entry level bikes made from steel in the 70's / 80's are just eternal. Alongside with Motobecane, Peugeot was making really sturdy bikes and quite light too on these "carbolite 103" you seems to have bought. Really nice video

I inherited a bike made in the early 90s from my grandfather. Hardest frame Ive ever seen. Koga Miyata Randonneur. Fixed it up with my dad with new Shimano parts for a couple hundred euro, and have been using it for years. It doesnt rust, doesnt bend. Solid steel. If I go on a bike packing vacation I get compliments about it from other bikers too. They really dont make them like that anymore. Its my most prized possession.

@@sylvaingarel4753 i rode over a pothole once on a bike trip and the frame was so hard that the bolt holding my saddle in place snapped clean through. Had to walk it to a shop in the town up ahead to get a new bolt. Frame was completely fine. I dont mean the saddle pen but the bolt that attaches the saddle itself to the pen. It was at least 1.5cm thick steel. It was so ridiculous to realize how hard that frame must be to transfer the entire impact to that one bolt. It has great traction too, if I ride on another bike now it annoys me how the frame wobbles when turning.

As for classic cars, there are a lot of them, maybe not as much as England, but we have a lot of fan clubs for old Beetles, 2CVs, VW vans, etc. As well as the classic Dutch car brands like Spijker and DAF. You just have to get lucky and be out when those fan clubs are on tour. Theres a better chance of seeing them when the weather is nice in the summers.

The roundabouts, you can see the triangles painted on the road. They indicate that people have to give way to traffic on the roundabout. If youre on one, other cars and cyclists have to give you right of way and wait for a time to enter the roundabout. Do stick out your hand to indicate turns so people know where you are going! And wave or give a thumbs up to cars that stop for you. Its a common courtesy.

Well made video. Normal speed for cyclists in the Netherlands is between 15 and 25 kmh. Going faster between other cyclist is not appreciated that much. That's why the men in lycra ride in groups on the regular roads, not on the bike pads and lanes. Next time just slow down a little and enjoy the view, just go with the flow ..

@@IwanDierckx Yeh, true. But they don't do that and the rest of the cyclists are happy for that. They don't want them on the bike path. Like the mopeds and the fat bikes. Riding 35 on your bike between other cyclist, like these guys do, is not the way to do it. In the UK speed and bravoury is the way to survive on the public road for cyclists, in the Netherlands it is not.

Think it depends a little on the road you're driving. In the city's where it s busy you slow down (like they did) if you are alone on a wide cycling path you can go faster. Especially when you are with only two I think its totally ok to cycle faster. But always be respectful of the other road users obviously! In my old village we have a lot of cyclist that go on the narrow 80km/u road, while there is a beautiful broad quiet cycling path through the fields. It is preferred by the inhabitants that you take the cycling path there even if you cycle quite fast. And then just be mindfull of others.

  • @TheSuperappelflap

    @TheSuperappelflap

I usually dont go above 25 but even at 30 or a bit above its fine as long as you dont bother other cyclists and slow down a bit for them. If you want to ride here on a racing bike, it is nice to get a bell on your bike. The extra 100-200 grams the bell weighs wont slow you down much and if you ring it people know youre coming up behind them. Its a courtesy. Alternatively you can just yell "HEY" very loudly like the local racing bike enthusiasts do. Its more annoying so I do recommend a bell. But you dont have to use the car roads in any case. And if you are passing any pedestrians, give them a wide berth, its not nice to have people on bikes passing 10cm to your side.

Cheap bikes are safe anywhere. If you use a frame lock or a cheap U-lock you will be fine with a cheap bike. There are plenty of other more expensive bikes for people to steal. Its recommended to use a secondary chain lock to lock your bike to a bike staple or lightpost if you have a more expensive model, or you really want to make sure it doesnt disappear. But its generally not a problem. Even though bike theft is a big problem, with millions of bikes around, the odds its yours that gets taken are quite low.

The ferry is definitely the most expensive parts. Hotels can be quite expensive. If you want to go for a week or so in the summer i definitely recommend researching campsites. There are lots of them, often in really nice areas in nature outside urban areas, and they can be about 10 to 15 euro p.p. It is wise to make reservations beforehand because they are often full in the summer season. We have specialized nature campsites that are for hikers and bikers, they do allow cars to park at a parking outside but on the terrain its just tents and caravans. They usually only have a bathroom, showers and a place to do your dishes, very few facilities, but they attract a lot of likeminded nature enjoyers.

Most bike lanes are either asphalt, paved stone, gravel roads, or worst case cobblestone. You can ride a racing bike anywhere, although the cobblestone might be a bit uncomfortable on narrow tyres, but you will live.

Hi. Cycling outside bike paths isn't that fun. But luckily there weren't many of them. In the Netherlands, cycling is pure pleasure. We definitely recommend everyone who loves cycling 🚴‍♂️ Thank you for comment 👌👌Regards

  • @TheSuperappelflap

The 60km red/grey/red road design is only used on low traffic roads outside urban areas, where it is safe. The bikes have priority on the bike lanes. Cars arent allowed to overtake each other when there are bikes. This type of roads is specifically designed so that they are barely wide enough for 2 cars to pass, but not when there are any cyclists. So they have to slow down if there are any bikes when they want to pass. Its based on decades of research showing this is the safest option when having seperate bike lanes isnt economically viable and the amount of car traffic doesnt make it necessary. And almost every driver is very considerate of cyclists. People who drive cars, also cycle themselves almost dayly and bring their kids to school on bikes. So they will give you a wide berth. The only place you may have to watch out is intersections without lights.

Stopping for red lights when there are no pedestrians or vehicles around is just stupid. Only people watching on videos care about those things. The people that it matters to are those on the roads and they don't seem bothered about it. Do you want jay-cycling rules to be introduced in the UK and Netherlands, just like jay-walking in the USA?

Great video,it just shows how backward the U.K is when it comes to having a proper cycling structure. The government wants to cut down on high traffic yet doesn’t invest in proper nationwide cycling schemes . Many people too feel scared to go on the roads on a bike , and cyclists in this country are vilified by the media at every opportunity, when cycling really should be seen as something to be admired and encouraged way of travelling.

Keep up. Once the car people realize, that every bike means one less car stuck in traffic in front of them, they will turn around. Its a mindset. You can get there. It took 50 years in the Netherlands to change the mindset and build all this infrastructure. Rome isnt built in a day. Call your local representatives and tell them how much money and commute time you can save. The streets in London shown in the video wouldnt need much to be bike safe. Some raised barriers, color coded bike lanes, or just as little as a few stripes on the side that give cyclists priority would suffice.
