Cycling the North Sea Coast - Amsterdam to Dunkirk Family Bike Tour - Episode 20
Between July 23rd and 28th, 2023, our family cycled from Amsterdam in the Netherlands to Dunkirk, France. This leg of our bike tour began in Amsterdam, went through Haarlem to the North Sea coast, through Bruges, Belgium, and on to Dunkirk, France to catch a ferry across the English Channel to Dover. We went through North Holland, South Holland, and Zeeland in the Netherlands, through Flanders, Belgium, and ending in the department of Nord, France.
This was part of a 5-month long family bicycle tour of Europe we did on sabbatical. See a playlist of all of the videos in order here • European Family Bike Tour

By taking a car to Dunkirk you would have missed all those beautiful sceneries. Thanks for taking us along for the ride.

@@pedalpowerfamily your routing along the North Sea helped us figure out how to get up that way coming from Bruges. Also, how are you able to pull off the repeated cycling vacation, do you live abroad?

It was one 5-month trip while on sabbatical. The kids finished their school year from the road.
You captured some amazing Dutch skies ⛅️🌤️☀️⛈️🌩️💨

Agreed! Haringvlietdam was my favorite 8:46
I was cycling the other way round from Ostend to Breskens that week thinking how glad I was with the wind in my back

I'm glad we were relatively fit by then. We were able to power through it after 4 1/2 months of cycling.
Wind in the Netherlands is usually coming from the southwest so you were up for a challenge!

Yes, it actually wasn't quite as bad as we feared. I'm sure it can be worse than what we experienced.
Lovely cycling along this coast. I've ridden in both directions many times - and it never disappoints. If you ever ride it again I'd ride down the river from Hoek van Holland to get the ferry between Maasluis and Rozenburg - that way you miss most of the more industrial Rotterdam Port area on the south bank of the estuary.

Good tip! It was neat to see the container ships, but seems like your way is easier if we go back.
Amazing

Thanks so much! Are you headed the same direction as us or will you have the benefit of a tailwind?
Born nearby Vlissingen and living nearby Rockanje …I saw you enjoyed our cycle patch in The Netherlands. Next year the other side of our country? Greetings from the Netherlands

Thanks! We biked this section in the end of July 2023.
Good job! At the Haringvlietdam there's a yearly bike contest called 'tegen de wind in fietsen' - riding against the wind.

With mountains you always get a nice descent but not with a headwind!

We rode on many great bike paths all over Europe but the Netherlands definitely has the most extensive network.

Flaanders is catching up but still decades behind like every country in the world ;) and its not even arrogant but the hard truth.
Not the easiest weather conditions but hope you liked it. Ask for some specific trails in advance and we can help you.
Nice trip! I recognize a lot of bike paths. 6:30 interesting to see you took this ferry, most local people take the ferry from Maassluis, that one is 7 times cheaper

Good to know. I overlooked that one when planning the route. That would also explain why there were so few people on our ferry. But it was pretty cool to see the container ships being loaded and unloaded.
Cycling in Holland is easy, flat ... but it's allways windy, putting Chicago to shame :)

Yes, our first thought was that we'd cover lots of distance each day compared to our time in the Alps, but the flat, smooth bike paths were definitely offset by the headwinds. Luckily we knew about the winds beforehand and planned accordingly.

@@pedalpowerfamily ok. I was already thinking you went the wrong direction, because usually in NL there is southwestern winds ..☺
Why helmets ??

We were often on bike paths away from cars on this leg of our journey but that wasn't always the case. My wife and I have both been saved by helmets in the past.

They weren't commuting from home to work, but on a long journey with a lot of bagage. Always keep safety in mind. Especially when cycling in Belgium with far lessers cycle infrastructure.
