Join me aboard one of the very few survivors of London’s pioneer batch of 8ft wide buses, the RTW class, based on the Leyland Titan PD2, but with pre-select gearbox. RT/RTL buses were to 7ft 6ins width, this class being a trial to prove that 8ft wide buses could operate perfectly well in London, as we all know now.
Enjoy a short ride on immaculate RTW467 (LLU 957) to Ilford, this bus having been the very last of its class of 500 in London service.
Most were exported to Ceylon after just 15 or so years of service, to die a slow and arduous death in intolerable heat and humidity combined with appalling neglect by the Ceylon Transport Board.
