Vasyl Lomachenko and Mikey Garcia, who should be on a collision course to stage the most compelling boxing match under 147 pounds in the near future, met each other for the first time Thursday.
They were in separate rooms at ESPN offices in Los Angeles until Garcia, the unbeaten World Boxing Council lightweight champion, walked down the hallway to greet Lomachenko, the World Boxing Organization super-featherweight champion.
After Garcia’s victory by unanimous decision over former four-division world champion Adrien Broner on Saturday on Showtime, both fighters are members of the top-five pound-for-pound list.
Garcia extended his right hand and said, “How you doing, champ? Best of luck to you.” Lomachenko defends his belt against Miguel Marriaga on Saturday night at 7 on ESPN.
As the pair posed for photos, Lomachenko manager Egis Klimas noted that a potential showdown between the fighters would be “perfect sizing.”
“I’m a former featherweight,” Garcia reminded. “I moved up for Broner [at 140 pounds], but I’m not that big. I’m small for 140. I want to come down to lightweight.
“And he’s got to move up to lightweight [135 pounds] and then we have a fight. That’s what the fans are asking for. Let’s give them that.”
Lomachenko agreed. “Boxing needs this fight.”
Klimas asked if it should be on pay-per-view, part of a strategy he has to have Lomachenko fight a 135-pound debut bout later this year to set up a date next summer with Garcia (37-0, 30 knockouts), who also has interest in fighting the Jorge Linares-Luke Campbell winner following their Sept. 23 lightweight title bout at the Forum.
“This fight could be on pay-per-view because all the fans have been asking about it,” Garcia said, later expressing openness to fighting on whatever network offers the best financial package. “We’re the main names. No other names can generate that kind of attention. Whenever they’re ready … .”

Garcia said he appreciates Lomachenko as “a tremendous fighter,” and may attend his Saturday bout.
But Lomachenko paused at lavish praise for Garcia, saying he thought the three-division champion from Riverside looked “very slow, sorry Mikey … you wanted the knockout.”
Garcia said the focus was to show punching strength, then box.
They both said they can feel the momentum building for their own bout.
“This is the fight to be made. No other fight creates as much attention and buzz. I’m more than happy to work at it,” Garcia said.
Said Lomachenko: “I’ve waited for the top fighters, and this is Mikey. It will be a great fight.”

The Mysterious.. I agree with you on that one. But the fact is there has been dishonesty by the part of Loma's side. His promoter stated Mikey is not a big enough name and we know Mikey has been around for a while and is as big a name as Marriaga. Why not just say they will eventually face him, but they want to develop Loma some more.
I'll buy that pay-per-view .

SHOOREEK FOOKS Salido staggered Loma with a hard uppercut. He kept the pressure on Loma with a hundred body punches. Loma had no answer. Mikey got dropped but he got up and won by KO. Mikey stepped to Lomas face and called him out. Now it's up to Loma to accept. If he's confident than he needs to make the fight and stop making excuses

Sorry Oscar but I just went over Garcia vs Bronner and just watched Lomachenko shut down Rigo (4th fighter in a row that quit). Nobody is in the same league as Loma. It's like betting against Roy Jones in the 90's. No Mas!

In an interview earlier Mikey said he was gonna be in the same studio as Loma and that they would probably run into each other. Not entirely a surprise, but probably not staged either.

Christopher... Not set up. Mikey interrupted Loma's press conference. This did nothing for Loma and he had nothing to gain by setting this up. Loma was discussing with the press other fight he was getting ready for and Mikey tried to make a fight happen with him... Sadly, Loma's promoter already backed out of this challenge. This fight will never happen when Bob Aarum is Lomachenko's promoter.

True warrior.. Bob is just talking but his actions are the opposite. Should have signed already. We know Mikey is his own boss, and here's what he had to say. "If he wants to move up to 35, we can definitely do that,” Garcia said. “I know Bob won’t say anything positive about that. I don’t even know if [Lomachenko] is actually interested in facing me. The way I know Top Rank works, they’ll have somebody else in line for him to win a title at 35 or maybe even at 40. Most likely, he’s not gonna wanna face me because Bob won’t allow it.”
Mikey looks bigger for sure, but let's see it. Loma needs to silence the haters by taking on a top ten fighter

what's funny is, when the hell is the last time in boxing you saw someone as small as lomachenko take on someone with garcias size difference, he looks literally twice the size, look at their heads lol. I think loma wins it, but the size difference is massive regardless of the weight on the scales. All this dehydrating nonsense hopefully one day will be gone

Lomachenko was a few days away from having to weigh in for a fight at 130, Garcia said he was 146 for the fight on Saturday and has probably gained a little since then even. I'm sure Mikey is probably bigger naturally but of course it's gonna be more exaggerated here, he's not really that much bigger

Loma already has 4 official ranked top10 fighters from 126-130 on his resume .
Garcia: "you need to move up to lightweight" Loma: " no problem". These guys clearly want each other. That's fantastic. Loma: "this is great fight for boxing." Great business move for both. Loma has more to lose IMO bc he has that shitty SD loss to salido. Mikey can rebound from a loss. All in all this is great news.

nelq06 mikey is a bit slow but his timing makes up for that. it would be a great fight. mikey is like the tim duncan of boxing. nothing fancy but very fundamentally sound. i can see a trilogy between them and even becoming great friends after like gatti/ward

lostit Right on point. I will still favor Loma but I am I wonder if Loma recognizes Mikey's excellent timing and power. Loma is way faster than Mikey but it doesn't make Mikey a slow fighter. He is more patient than slow. As we saw Mikey's timing, power and patience topped Broner's skills and speed. It should be a great match up. Loma is honest which is a good thing but I hope he doesn't underestimate Mikey. Mikey has the best fundamentals I have seen in a long time and I have watched boxing since the late 80s. Great match up. It should be an exciting fight.

To be fair he was talking about tactics, not actual speed. Early slow was his words, meaning the beginning of the fight, Lomachenko was questioning tactics.

Well, if Loma says Mickey was too slow, then even better for his favor to fight Mickey right? But then again, why is Loma fighting can tomatoes with no reputation and is not willing to fight Mickey then? If Mickey is too slow then Lomachenko should take the fight and make easy money. I can tell you Mickey sparred with Manny Pacquiao in the past when he was under Bob Arum, and Manny never beat Mickey. Even Bob Arum knew that. This was the reason Manny and Mickey never fought. Even when Manny was going to fight Mayweather, they called Mickey for sparring sessions and Mickey gave Manny problems. Loma makes this fight happen bitch stop avoiding elite fighters.
What I love is that if Loma says it's going to be a great fight, he genuinely thinks it will be a good fight. When asked about how he thought the Rigo fight, he said what he felt-that it was not going to be a good fight, and sure enough... however, he is honest about who he feels will be a good competitor

These 2 are of my favourite fighters,Id love to see them fight in the next year or 18 months,both are willing to fight each other so hopefully when Loma has had a couple of fights at 135 they make it happen.I reckon Loma has more skills but Mikey is a very clever fighter also and he is a bit bigger than Loma and has better power,for me a 50/50 fight right now and like they were saying one of the best possible fights out there at the moment.

This video basically guarantees this fight is gonna happen. Mikey recognizes that lomachenko is rocketing in popularity and made a smart decision. Win or lose he will make great money off this and 1 loss won't kill his career. If he loses. I'm favoring lomachenko bc he's absolutely brilliant in the ring but you can't knock Mikey's power or his fundamentals. I just feel he's a little basic in style and slow in comparison to lomachenko. This is a defining fight for both of these guys.

I said it when this video came out. Rigo first, then Mickey. He just beat Rigo now Loma needs to move up to 135lb and fight Mickey and catch Gervonte Davis up there as well. This guy's future looks great. To think he still has a good 6 years left before he starts going downhill makes me believe we're about to see a lot of great fights out of Lomachenko

These 2 and Spence. Top 3 p4p. So good to see 2 great and respectful fighters ready to fight each other. This is the real deal. I hope we get to see these 2 fight each other a few times. Will be very close. I can’t call it, but if I had to, Loma very close split decision in the first fight. Only because I think it would take at least 6 rounds for Mikey to adjust to Loma’s speed and timing, and by then it would be to much to pull the rounds back.

Eli Harris Yeah l cant disagree with that. I completely forgot about Crawford. He has the weight advantage on both Mikey and Loma so would probably win against both. But only just. Big shame Terrance doesn’t have a better promoter, he should be a superstar really. But it just goes to show (considering the belts he has) how widely unheard of he is by the casual fan. I think this is a better ‘fight’ in my opinion than watching Crawford marginally win a points decision over one of these 2. Crawford should fight Linares. That would be a great way to see how he would cope with someone slick in the Lightweight division. I still don’t believe he has faced anyone truely world class yet.

grapedrank666 - Rigo hasn't done anything in 4 years. If he wants to fight the big boys, maybe he should put himself in position. Instead he'll continue fighting 50th ranked 122 pounders once a year.

no, mikey have alot of respect for lomas skills loma will dodge all his punches and after few rounds loma will start toying with mikey
