Thank you. Very honest and humble; these are impressive qualities in pastors. I believe the trend toward rock-pop singing, with guitars, drums, lead singers etc. is responsible for much worldliness. Too many egos and secret ambitions. Returning to simple chanting of psalms , in my experience, greatly helps scriptural learning and deepens worship. Less likely to be a crowd pleaser though.

How to describe what the church should be? I would start with Col 3:16. “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.” ‭‭then, take them to Ephesians 4. Then explain we are to love, learn, then disciple, and help others…..

Red flag “we’re just trying to keep people from leaving it and dividing...” That is the wrong goal and you’re the wrong person for that goal. It is Christ who keeps and preserves His bride. The only focus of the church should be to faithfully preach the Word and deliver the sacraments all in a worthy manner in humility and reverence to the truth that The Lord is sovereign over all things like budget and numbers and people showing up and marriages saying together, etc.

In context, he is saying that we are currently far from where God wants us to be as the Church, and he lists some of the things we are just managing to do-not goals, but a low bar of things that we are settling for. I don't think he would disagree with any of the things you mention.

Logos, I love your software, but sometimes I despise your discernment on biblically solid pastors. Chan has too many red flags within his theology. Get better teachers like Steve Lawson or Andrew Rappaport. Your followers and customers deserve better.
