The ancient port of Alexandria - the biggest port of its time and the most important trading hub of the ancient world. And a destination for hundreds of thousands of seafarers, traders and travellers from all over the world. The huge seaport was almost four kilometres long and covered an area totalling eleven square kilometres. Experts believe up to five hundred ships could anchor here at the same time - an absolute record. The port's landmark and one of the seven ancient wonders of the world is the lighthouse of Pharos. State-of-the-art technology enabled its light to be seen from a distance of fifty kilometres. Thanks to its gigantic harbour, Egypt became the leading trading power of the ancient world.
But what happens when this legend takes on a modern-day icon? The ancient port of Alexandria faces the Port of Rotterdam - the largest port in Europe. Covering an area totalling one hundred and twenty-seven thousand square kilometres - the Port of Rotterdam is twice the size of Manhattan. One hundred and fifty thousand ships and four hundred and seventy million tons of cargo handled per year. A logistical masterpiece - possible only by using state-of-the-art technology and fully automated systems.
A contest of superlatives - The ancient port of Alexandria versus the port of Rotterdam! Two opponents. Three categories. And lots of surprises. Which port revolutionises maritime trade? Which of the contenders enables the most handling of cargo? And which port features the most state-of-the-art technology?
In LEGENDS VS MODERN ICONS, the world’s latest engineering achievements, high-tech vehicles and superlative constructions compete against their legendary equivalents that are world famous and milestones in their own field. Can a modern luxury cruise ship outperform the famous Titanic? Is Wembley Stadium superior to the Colosseum? Each episode showcases one battle between a legend and its iconic modern equivalent.

In order for the lighthouse in Alexandria to be seen 50 km's away it would need to be nearly 1,000 feet tall. The lighthouse of Alexandria was about 350 feet tall. It could be seen only 35 km's away. That's pretty good considering the year it was built.

If there was the right type of atmospheric inversion, the light might be seen much further away. Just like a desert oasis can be. Or the lights of a nighttime city can be reflected far out to sea if the conditions are right. These usual incidents would be much talked about, and the lighthouse would get a reputation even if this only happened a few times a year.

There was an ancient coin found with an engraved rendering of the ancient light house. It is the only picture of the lighthouse from the time when It was still standing. It shows a slightly different structure than images that were made hundreds of years after it was destroyed.

There is no way ancient Alexandria will be able to compete against Rotterdam or any other modern ports. Rotterdam is winning this contest simply because of technology. Come on.
