When I remove a few old pine trees on my 1 acre, I can't believe how fast the new tree grows. I guess when the sun hits the ground, the pinecones starts to germinate.

There are small seeds inside the pine cone that sort of look like maple seeds. They disperse when the fins on the pine cone open. A lot of the time they have dispersed from the cone while it is still on the tree. They fly through the air and hit the ground. Pine seeds really need the sunlight and direct contact with the soil to germinate and grow. They thrive in old fields that are allowed to grow up.

We did the same thing as you. The land behind us was being logged, so I took a walk back to check property lines and met with the logger. He took the time to walk our land and count the useful trees. There were over 65 trees, maple, oak, hemlock, etc. that he took, and after he was done, the deer, fox, turkey, bear, and other animals repopulated the area as if nothing had happened. I did notice that the coyotes seem to have moved on to other areas, which was a good thing imho.

Wow! That was quite the enterprise. I think selective logging will ultimately be better for forest health. Also you have a perimeter around the house so you don't have a danger of something falling on it. I'm glad you got what you needed to complete some needed work on the house. Eclipse: in my location we did not get really dark. It just got dim. The temperature dropped and the wind picked up. I had to put on a fleece then it warmed up again after the sun came back out. A little town in northern Cape Breton, Meat Cove, got the full meal deal.🙂👍👍🇨🇦

Awesome video!!! Enjoyed the ride in the skidder with Ritchie! Organize a work-party day this summer and ask those (who know what they’re doing) to bring their chainsaws, chain oil and premix gas cans, chains, etc. Rich will be busy driving the Kubota front end loader with cut logs. Couple folks could be working a log splitter! Too much for you to tackle this alone! God bless, gg

I think that went very well. I’ve seen much worse messes left behind by some loggers. Make a plan to clean up the selected areas that will give you the highest quality firewood first. That way it won’t begin to rot while you are working somewhere else. Rich is correct in saying to make piles in the woods as you go. Don’t even bother to cover them. When you gather the various piles in the fall and bring it home it can be covered. I love to work in the woods. Good luck and be safe! Thanks for sharing your experience.

We just went out into our forest yesterday to cut up some of the windfall trees (lots) after last weeks big windstorm. The trails are pretty open now except for a few very large trees that still need to be cut up and removed. We are using our new electric chainsaw (18") which does a surprisingly good job, and is far less trouble than my gas-powered saw.I'm looking into getting a chipper now to clear out all the cuttings and limbs along the trails.

We bought 10ac that was select cut for black cherry and a dozer was brought in to clean up the roads. All this was 9months before I bought it. Ritchie the best thing I ever bought for cleaning up brush was a grapple for the front of my tractor. Such a difference that in one year only working a weekend a month I was able to clean up all the tops and burn them. You could also bring in someone to cut the firewood that's down alreaty.

Interesting technique, I thought this kind of logging is only done by harvesters these days. I've done some small-scale manual logging myself, when I needed poles for pastures. Large forrest management companies are happy to let individals in for a "selection stage" in a young wood, since machines can't get there at that stage, its too dense for them. Great the logging covered some of your build costs, hope it helps to fijish your house soon! 👏

Logging in the Winter also avoids disrupting nesting birds. Which is mandatory per the Migratory Species Protections Act. The trash left behind becomes nutrient for organisms. Many of which become food for birds..... The Circle of Life Goes Round and Round......😊

Thank you for another great vid. Here in Oregon, there is such resistance to any kind of logging... was wondering if you had any permit issues or county / neighbor issues etc. Not against logging at all but we once owned 20acres of raw 110yr old growth on a mountain in Oregon right in the 'Spotted Owl area' and finally was able to sell and get out from under the government / political issues that make logging impossible - and is why I'm curious.

We don’t need permits here unless we’re clear cutting a large area (more than 25 acres).
