LOL...Logs are not going away. Sitting in Calculus right now reviewing Logs. I just love math....the Logs are the Exponents. Just love how it builds on itself. You did a great job teaching this...thank you very much. Back to the Chain Rule I go! With confidence :).

This is a great video except the solution at the end should be log base 3 (160) and not simply 160:)

Teacher, I have a question. Why do logarithms exist?
@mrcausey

Logarithms were developed during a time when there were no calculators and using logarithms made working with large calculations easier.

Exponent that make 2 equals 8 is 3 Log 2 to become 8 is 3
There is a mistake in the last example. It should read: log 160 with base 3 not 160

Yes, I included that in the pinned comment.

Which rules do you think should be added? Thanks for watching.
But what is the point of logarithms? We understand now how to solve logarithms but how does it apply in real life problems? Why are they named logarithm? When do we choose to solve a problem via logarithms?
@mrcausey

Thank you for watching my video and such a thoughtful question. Logarithms have many uses in science, economics, and mathematics, especially base 10 and base e. If you have ever used the pH scale you have used logs. The pH scale is defined as -logbase10 [H+]. Logarithms also made calculations easier with a slide rule. You might say the slide was the original calculator.
