    Years after leaving school, I have been relearning mathematics for 3D animation including physics simulations. This week, I was learning logarithm which I had long forgotten. Now I am looking for challenging logarithm problems or puzzles to solve.

    Heck, I was born in 1962 and I didn't have an electronic calculator until I was sixteen so in my mathematical education logarithms were vital for doing calculations. Even often I got my first calculator (with a square root function!) They were not allowed in exams but you got a collection of log tables.

    This would be clearer if you plotted it in a two axis plane. In a log chart the slope represents rate of change so a constant growth is a straight line. In a linear chart a constant growth rate is parabolic.

    If logarithms are exponents then why not just use the exponential equivalent equation to solve the problem? Not sure if this explains why logarithms are useful. I recommend checking KZread video by “Tarek Said”

    I've been trying to understand what a logarithm is and why it's useful. I was lost around 2'15". To me, a statement such as "logarithms 'undo' exponential functions so that we can solve for x" is incomprehensible, because I don't know what "exponential functions" are.

  • @yourface07

    @yourface07

    2 жыл бұрын

    Simply put, an exponential function is a function with an exponent in it. Exponents refer to the things that float above a letter or number. Think of x squared, the number ‘2’ would float above the top right corner of ‘x’ (I wish I could type it on my phone). Another way of saying x squared would be to say ‘x to the power of 2’. Now let’s swap it around. Let’s say ‘2 to the power of x’ instead. Here, 2 would have a floating ‘x’ above it, therefore ‘x’ could be referred to as the exponent. In the video, she said ‘logarithms ‘undo’ exponential functions where ‘x’ is the exponent. This is because, taking the logarithm of an exponential function essentially leaves you with an expression that equals ‘ = ‘ the exponent. So if ‘x’ was the exponent, the expression would equal ‘ = ‘ x, allowing you to solve for ‘x’. This is what she meant by ‘undoing’ and exponential function, simply figuring out what ‘x’ was if it was used as an exponent / power.

Some people are amazing teachers, who will explain it much better than I. Some other videos work better for other people. Try Eddie Woo ‘intro to logarithms’, I like his methods.

    Both can be true. The square root 'undoes' a square, so the square root is not the inverse of all exponents, only the square.

    They only tell us what to learn but never say why we should learn. Teachers do not want students to ask questions. If students ask questions teachers think students are testing them so they get angry.

    I would definitely consider math and invention and not a discovery. Math is just a way for humans to connect the world around them and to understand it better. It's not something you can teach to another animal because it don't actually exist. If an animal sees 2 humans it don't know that there's two. Mainly because other animals don't connect the world around them the same way that we humans do.
