DUde, I am totally convinced that a secret cabal of snooty musicians have been actively making music theory more complicated than it is, because i watch a 3 minute explanation of a concept by LoG, and, ohhh, its not that difficult. THanks for these videos, i will absolutely be joining yr patreon.

Thanks for bringing that up and giving me an excuse to talk about it! I can't speak on behalf of every teacher/teaching method, but I can speak on behalf of the standard approach to music theory a general university has, as that is what I have experienced. There are two main issues that routinely bring confusion: 1.) Teaching concepts while not discussing their origin. For example, many people learn augmented triads when they learn their "triads" (maj, min, aug, dim). Most people never use that sound because it is innately not as palatable as major or minor. However, once you know where it naturally exists (inside of a Dominant 7 chord that moves to minor, aka the "5 of 6"), not only do they sound great but they are also incredibly easy to use as you now have a purpose. This was literally never mentioned in the 4 years of college I went to, or in guitar lessons I had growing up. Instead it was "This is augmented, learn it. You can move it up or back major 3rds, pretty neat huh? See you next time!". The same can be said about melodic minor, harmonic minor (a complete waste of time btw), diminished 7, the list goes on. People often teach these sounds as though they just manifested out of thin air, where instead they were a natural evolution of already established sounds and have become what they are after centuries of use. I had a class where we discussed modes in college and it went like this, "Mixolydian is major with b7, Dorian is minor with natural 6" etc. And after the class I had to tell my peers "just so you know, modes are just the same notes of a key but rearranged to match a certain chord. Mixolydian is the sound of the 5 chord, Dorian the sound of the 2 chord, etc". Their response was "Ohh, really? That makes so much sense". I had to do this because this WASN'T DISCUSSED IN THE COLLEGE LEVEL MUSIC THEORY CLASS. 2.) Terminology. Musicians (especially college educated ones) are often obsessed with music terms. So much so that I've had interactions with people that say what I'm doing is "wrong" because I don't use the same terms, even though I'm executing the concept exactly. What people often don't realize is terminology is WORTHLESS when it comes to being the best possible independent musician you can be. Especially when the terminology over complicates things, like many of the terms in the music world. But if that's how you're taught and these terms are drilled into your head and made as gospel, it's very difficult to look at it a different way. I can safely say this, I have met people who know allllllll the terms and the theory while simultaneously sounding terrible, and I've met people who have no idea what they are doing who sound incredible. Teaching music in most (not all) institutions is not done in a way to create strong musicians. It is done in a way so people learn information to pass a test. They don't care if you know how to use the stuff and sound great with it, they just want you to be able to rattle off information. There are people that graduated the school I went to that were fine musicians, but there were also people that graduated who were legit bad. As in couldn't identify a major or a minor chord by ear (I know because I tutored them). In the end, the goal should always be explain things in the most thorough, useful, and practical way possible, while making it easy to understand. Anything that prevents those aspects needs to be tossed.

This might be 1 of the most important lessons in all of music!!! Building Tension, Intensity, gives Movement and Momentum in, into, and through Progressions, Changes, Vamps, Themes, etc. Then, RESOLVING it, gives the listener a satisfying feeling, which is what makes music so powerful, meaningful, and fulfilling!!! IMO, this series is crucial for all musicians, especially performers, songwriters, and composers!!! Well done, Low G!!!

The part about knowing the roots is so important!! I honestly do not know why guitarists don't spend the time actually learning where each note is throughout the fretboard. It gives so much freedom to your thought process that the whole fretboard becomes transparent and you can just play anything you hear in your head. On classical instruments like violin that is pretty much the only way you go. I guess the shape based structure of the guitar sort of contributes to the laziness of guitar players. Great lesson LoG!

Your advice about singing the notes is so simple yet so effective to helping produce natural sounding phrases. Shawn Lane, one of the best ever used to do this. You are a great teacher, as well as a great player, I hope this channel gets huge, you deserve it.

That is a terrific lesson. I had to go back to part I first to get a refresher, because up till now it's just been something you learn once and never use. So thank you very much for giving us a context for practical application! 🤘

Sounds great. For sure, these types of sounds can seem unusable if you don't have the proper context. However once you know how and when to use them, they are very valuable!

My guitar Teacher forced me to learn all the notes on the fretboard, yeah it was boring as f*ck but in the long run it's the most usefull. my strategy is learning only one note for 1 week, i did not learn all the sharps and flats because they are next to each main note like C next to it is C# and so on

I realized that your speed is from your picking and more on your finger picking. I have to go to 75% to folo your speed and get it almost all clean. Teach me how to speed up man!!!
