Loft Bed Build DIY, 120 Dollars, Queen Size

Комедия

UPDATE: I added diagonal 1x3's a s cross bracing to the front and back and now the loft is crazy rigid and stable. No swaying side to side even if I try.
In this video tutorial I will show you how to build a solid queen size loft bed for under 150 bucks. This thing is cheap, sturdy, and easy to build. With a bed like this in your apartment, the ladies will come flocking.
This beginner tutorial will show you how to build a loft bed using 2x4s and 2x6 lumber from Lowes. The total wood cost will be about 100 bucks and the other materials such as screws and bolts will be about 20 - 30 dollars. This thing is easy and fast to build, it only took me about 5 hours by myself and I was recording the whole thing and making the video at the same time. This project should take you less than a day from start to finish.

UPDATE: On both ends of the bed I added diagonal 1x3's as cross bracing going from the top of one leg to the bottom of the opposite leg, and now the bed is crazy rigid and stable, NO ROCKING what so ever. The difference is day and night.

I am dealing with lack of rigidity with my loft bed.. not sure if I should go with diagonal cross braces or horizontal... I have 2"x6" bed mattress frame, followed halfway down with a 2" x 3", and then the same at the base, on 3 sides. all the 2" x 3" boards are connected to the 2" x 4" legs with 3 screws, triangular pattern, and the 2" x 6" with 4 or 5 screws... but still there is some wobble... which is better, diagonal or horizontal?

It's has been almost a year and my husband and I are SO happy we came across this video! This bed is so customizable as well. For instance ,we added some hooks to the side of the bed for hanging things. I would like to add more customization though like screen handles on to pull ourselves up on the bed instead of holding on the sides. I would also like to add shelf/pocket on the top side to put our phones, maybe add a small table (foldable) at the bottom for studying.

That had way to much wobble for me and adding the extra screws will definitely help with the finished product but you shouldn't rely on the wall for support. If it's something you will be sleeping on and potentially more, you want it to be completely stable and free standing. I had a loft in my room as a teenager. I had a queen size bed on it but we built it to fit a king so I had enough room to walk around and keep my alarm clock and fan. It also made it far easier to make my bed. We built it like a deck and instead of using 2x6s we used 4x4s and didn't require the additional lumber across the bottom or diagonally. Since I always had sleep overs for me and a room full of young children for my niece we did the upper railing as rope netting mounted to the ceiling so no one could fall off. There was absolutely no movement even with a bunch of teenagers climbing up and down and kids bouncing around. When I moved out my mom shortened the legs to replace the deck off the side door and even 25 years after building it, it's still as strong as ever never shifting or moving.

Built this today. First solo diy build & besides converting everything to metric (aus 😩) was easy to follow along with the video. Not as high and threw in some extra bracing to keep the folks happy but still love it. Thanks!

This bed wouldn't fit a 60" x 80" queen-size mattress. The 2x6 legs go into that space. You would have to make the 60" 2x6 be 63" because of the 1.5" on either side of the legs.

Great work!!

2x4 90 degree corner posts would be more sturdy, wouldn’t have to notch the luon. It’s needs more bracing , I would’ve angled cut the ladder and screwed into the frame. Also, drill bits are awesome. This is great dimensions and gives me a baseline for my build.

Make it sturdy or go home. You figured out one wobble but not the other, but you must be tired from all that building, hope you figured out how to make it better without relying on damaging the walls. Doesn’t work great yet, but it’s getting there. Thank you for sharing :)

Would benefit from better joinery (like dados for the ladder rungs, half laps for the rectangular mattress frame) and beefier legs, but as long as it works for you, nicely done.

I'm going to attempt this. I just wanted to know if you thought it would be a good idea to add a 2x4 to make a L shape on every 2x6 leg for a little more support in addition to the cross beams. I saw it on another diy thought it could help. Any thoughts? I'm doing Queen Also. Great video btw. Thanks alot!!

no, with how he overlapped the pieces, one side was going to be true to size and one side would have to be made bigger. if you draw it out you’ll see.

You got the bed built but you need a lot more education in building and design. Over building in some places and a lot of under support in others. The money you spent on over building would gone for finishing the deck and stairs properly and making them safer. you are luck that the whole thing did not come down with you. I would not climb on that structure!

The corners need more support. Drilling screws from the face of one 2x6 into the butt of the other 2x6 is counting on the shear strength of the screws and the weak end grain of the wood to hold. Better would be half laps into the legs, but the legs need to be meatier (perhaps 3 2x4 laminated together). This way, the weight of the bed is onto the wood rather than bolts. The ladder man be strong enough, but dados for each rung would hold it so much better. 1x1 glued along the perimeter of the inside of frame (between 2x4s, and at head and foot board locations), and using 3/4 particle board rather than whatever he had would be extremely strong and help keep bed square. For the 2x4s under the mattress, 7 seems like overbuild but I don’t recall what grade sheet material he used. Looks thin though.
