When I was still an apprentice it was great fun finding out after I dumped the pins the 1st time I tried to rekey one of these that it has its own type of pins and springs individual to that series. That made for a fun day since I didn't happen to have any with me. As luck would have it I had an old lock that somebody had discarded so I had to basically pirate the old cylinder parts to put in theirs. #Lockboss

Great Video PJ. I remember taking the first one of those of a lever and was like what the F!*$? Couple dumped bibles and broken caps and I would definitely recommend anyone that is a #LockBoss pick up some extra springs, top pins and caps for these.

Thanks for the video, PJ. I had a friend in the locksport community create a follower for the F-series locks and it works well. I have yet, however, to find a follower that does well for the F-series LEVER cores. The tailpiece on those, as you know, is oval and longer than the standard F-series. I've reached out to Schlage with no joy, so if the follower in this video would work for those, I'd be an even BETTER #lockboss with one in my toolbox! Thanks!

#Lockboss I had to deal with the top pins falling out of the Bible that was such a mess to have to rebuild I have since used the shim method and it has not had any more issues now that I know the lab makes a f series follower I will make sure to order it thanks for everything enjoy your videos as always keep them coming.

Im glad you mentioned the shim , I use it on other locks especially in the morning when i have too much coffee. Also i carry a piece of pex (plastic type plumbing pipe with me to make an emergency follower. I am self taught so I learned the hard way about the f cylinders. #lockboss

Hey PJ I have 6 of those because in the area that I’m at has those everywhere. I agree they’re just a joy rekeying these, and just delightful when you have to remove the master pins out of the plug to rekey them or to remaster key them again. They need to make a follower to remove these masters pins with having to rebuild them every single time. Specially when you have to remaster key 30+ of these little 💩’s!!! I won this week and it would seem greedy! So I won’t 😂

I think you should show how to remove the cartridge circlip

Hate those caps. Love the lab follower. #lockboss

Using a shim for the f series was the best tip I've ever gotten from anyone. The f series was the first lock I had to put the top pins back in because I dumped them. I just bought some of the f series caps from clk supplies a couple weeks back and thank you PJ and clk supplies for the birthday gifts as well. #LockBoss

ProTip - - Careful using a 'Pickgun' on the F-series, it can blow the spring cap off and leave the customer with a rattling lever and you a call back for warranty work. Tip #2 After gaining entry to a home or business, have the customer try their key if the lock is in question to save you coming back, if there's an issue you can address it right then and there.

Hi pj when i started locksmithing I didn't have a problem with the follower but i did have a problem with the springs as i tried to fit regular springs into a f series lock when one must use compressible springs and thats how i found clk supplies.#lockboss

@@clksupplies yes alot of newbies may not know about the compressed springs most locksmith courses really won't mention this fact and most common locksmith suppliers don't sell these springs as you do.

Using one of those Lab followers works great on the F series locks. I've had to rekey them quite a few times. #LOCKBOSS

I learned that the hard way. I also need a shim because I was playing with making pins and they would get stuck in the grove for the c clip

Finally someone developed one, I've been doing the 90° and solid follower for years, luckily I've never had one puke the top pins out at me #Lockboss

I just did 5 of these Saturday. The hpc followers seem to work fine. The cap on the Bible on these will not tolerate much bumping or snap gun manipulation so one should be careful on that.

Yeah rekeying F series cylinder with T pins after you accidentally dump the Bible is a fun way to spend a evening hiding from your family jeez thanks CLK supplies for your assistance #Lockboss

In the beginning, when I first started, I used the metal from security tags for this and shimming cylinders open. Of course now I have the proper follower and real shims. But I didn't know about the first trick, you showed. If I'm ever in a situation , where for some reason I don't have the specific follower and shims, this knowledge will come in handy. As you said, and I’m sure any #Lockboss will agree, the F Series is a “joy” to work on! I have only run across them occasionally, and usually use the shim method on any lock for safety, however I really like the look of that LAB follower!!!

Unfortunately the F series lock I just bought (didn't know!) has a slightly different tailpiece. No flat on either end of the oval, and the peak of the oval starts out upright in line with the bible, not 90-degrees. Can't turn the key 180, so I'll have to try shimming in-line with the bible. I'm not expecting great results. Thanks for the video!!

How do I know the type of lock I have? is there a some marking that tell me? On my door I have a schlage, lever type lock, the key is 6 pins (SC4). is not working well. I went to home depot and I purchased a lever type schage brand lock. When I opened the package I notice the keys have 5 pins, labeled with a C. I want to get a lock just like the existing one, but I don't know how to know my existing type of lock.

"Absolute joy" for describing the Schlage compressible cylinders is way to kind a description for the abomination that they are, especially when you consider Schlage previously invented a cylinder that so many other manufacturers copied because it was a good design. Nobody will ever copy the compressible cylinders :} Love your very clear and simple locksmith training, it's really a good resource for the industry. #lockboss

As of yet I've not had the enjoyment of working on SCHLAGE locks. But I now have knowledge as to correctly do them. Thanks for making all of who enjoys learning a better #LOCKBOSS. O BTW got my CLK SUPPLIES Pining Mat and the plug follower ( same as you used here ) and my #LOCKBOSS sticker ( OH, it's on my favorite COFFEE CUP) It all makes me feel like a #LOCKBOSS.
