Lockdown in New Zealand | Russell Howard Stands Up to the World | Avalon Comedy

Комедия

In January 2021, when Britain was in the depths of it's third lockdown, Russell Howard went to explore what living with COVID was like on the other side of the world in New Zealand.

The very name strikes horror into my soul. On a ski trip many years ago ago with the kids; they were allowed one bag of lollies of choice for the trip down from Auckland. My 6 yr old boy saved his until the last minute and gobbled the lot as we reached the motel. We were sharing a bed. During the night, he reared up, burped, and puked up the whole lot on my head. Since then, I've had to avert my gaze when I pass them in the supermarket.

I was advised to shield last year - 3.5 months alone in a one-bed flat with no garden access and no family nearby. Weirdly I coped ok, mentally, at the time (as tough as it was). It’s now that I feel like I’m struggling, as I try to make sense of the fact that some people view having to wear a mask for a 20-minute bus journey as being an affront to their human rights. People suck. A fortnight in a hotel - with the ability to get out for 40-mins a day - would’ve been much preferred to my experience last year. On the plus side, though, I haven’t had covid and my friends and family are healthy so I’ve lots to celebrate. Not everyone is as fortunate. This pandemic has really shown people’s true colours. That’s another blessing, in a way.

Coping with isolation is a bit of an art form. I’ve had a chronic illness for 18 years. I was so bored when I first stopped working. Now I can kill time like a master 😂😂😂 Really the only difference in my life from the pandemic is that I stopped going to my doctor fortnightly and had calls instead. I go to him again now but less often. I still go to my chiro. It averages out to leaving the house once every 4 weeks. I’m fine with that. The part of it that I’m not fine with is the inner ugliness of people being displayed proudly. You are absolutely correct. People suck.
