our choir sang this for a festival and our judge just so happened to have a recently departed husband and he was scottish and this was his favorite song and we also just so happened to sing this song for her completely unaware that he had just recently departed and she had us sing it again for her and she gave us the highest score and the entire time we were singing it she was sobbing and i felt so bad but also she wanted us to and i love her

This was our baritone song for our spring chorus concert. While it’s not a lot of people in my choir’s favorite song, I think it is beautiful and brings me to tears every time I hear it

when i sang this song in choir we did it way slower than this so it didn't sound like a happy song because it really isn't. it's about death and lack of freedom and loss of love. we kept it very slow and somber, so im not sure how i feel about hearing it being done so fast like this.

It is a matter of perspective. The tempo here is a bit "brisk" but it probably well suited the atmosphere of this concert setting. It seems that MANY choirs have now performed this particular interpretation of the original folk song. Post a link to your choir performing to get feedback on your director's interpretation.

Aidan Kearns when my choir performed this, we split the solos between a bunch of people (one sings a verse, another person takes over, on and on). I’m Welsh-American, and I’ve been raised with Celtic music and culture, so I figured I’d slip in a little bit of the accent for my solo. My director was thrilled (even though it wasn’t too good), simply because nobody else thought to sing that way. Also, the soloist here is doing a good many vocal slides which certainly were not in the sheet music I saw. Though the dynamics and tempo of this performance are absolutely lovely.

@@maew4172 its boring because there is little musicality. no accent at all sounds horrible, there is little movement it just sounds like notes being played on a piano, no energy, this song is something you would sing when your drunk with your mates

@@maew4172 why the fuck would another performance effect how boring this performance is. I sang this song in my schools concert choir and I love it. That's also similar to how my director described it. I didnt describe what I meant by "notes on a piano" well. by notes on a piano im basically saying they are just hitting their note and doing nothing with it. Its like when a factory assembly worker takes one part and puts it on and then moves onto the next part.

@@Novafan super old comment but hi there’s an American accent because it’s sung by an American choir :) I actually think their vocals are incredible! the dynamic contrast sure makes up for where they fall flat, and their blend is absolutely gorgeous! the basses and altos had WONDERFUL tone and I think this arrangement in general is just lovely
