The Music of King’s: Choral Favourites From Cambridge is a celebration of choral music throughout the ages and around the world. Its track list spans more than 400 years of composition, with compositions from countries including Germany, France, Great Britain, Italy, Norway, America and China.
For this latest album on the Choir’s own label, Stephen Cleobury has chosen to present a selection psalms, folksongs and other exceptional works that have stood the test of time alongside some of the Choir’s contemporary favourites. Highlights include Ola Gjeilo’s setting of Ubi caritas, Antonio Lotti’s Crucifixus and James Erb’s arrangement of the much-loved American Folksong Shenandoah.

To be sure...you are a fortunate soul to have had that opportunity. There are many fine arrangements over the years from simple eloquence with a duet culling from the Americana heritage to this zenith of the British choral tradition. The Erb arrangement, to my ears and heart, has been the most touching and compelling of all.

'Tis seven long years since last I've seen you And hear your rolling river 'Tis seven long years since last I've seen you way, we're bound away Across the wide Missouri. Chorales, Hymns, Classical Music, etc are all about frequency & resonance. This sort of music (within a certain range of frequency) actually resonates within our own genetic makeup ie our DNA. This is why we are so moved by these pieces of music. The early church knew all about this & used it to their advantage when designing the first Catholic basilica’s. This is why ppl “feel” “god” when they’re listening to a choir in a cathedral. I often times laugh & cry at the same time (Ode to Joy gets me every time lol) so I’m well aware of how powerful this phenomena is. The Buddhist Om, The Gregorian chants, Hebrew, Aramaic/Arabic, Native Peoples chants/prayers etc, all have the same effect. It’s hardwired into us at the genetic level. I’m a “Yankee” but I love this song as I’m an amateur Civil War historian. Lorena is a beautiful song that came from that war too; both Billy Yank & Johnny Reb adored it.
