The men and women of the WSL World Tour bounce back Down Under, this time to West Oz and the meaty waves of Margaret River and The Box. STAB’s Ashton Goggans trys his hand at a unruly slab with Western Australia’s favorite surfing son, Taj Burrow. Then Ashton’s off to a world-class winery with Red Bull Airborne star Jay Davies. Turns out the world’s best pro surfers have a solid dose of culture flowing in their veins. Study up on all the good times, right here on Ep. 4 of No Contest. Next stop is Rio!

@@RedBullSurfing Thanks for replying! Love seeing the culture of the area hosting the comp plus the before/after heat behind the scene stuff is great too. Looking forward to the next one!
Very cool to know more about this part of western Australia that I knew only from the waves I saw in Taj Burrow movies, when I was still a child / teenager. Undoubtedly, the most important surfer for future generations, and how to surf today. Who lost was the wct, not knowing how to judge their maneuvers at that time. The only thing that could add to this doc. it is a little more resourceful in relation to the aboriginal cultural wealth in the west of Australia, already very well publicized in his paintings, in his music and in anthropology books. Remember that language is only "strange", to outsiders.
Sick series

seeing this makes me want to get back in the water..... i'm 46 now and haven't surfed for years.... i truly believe that if i'd kept surfing i wouldn't have ruined my life... take note kids: Don't ever give up surfing. No matter what. Is there a video anyone can point me to with the best Jakes Point surfing? (My best memories of surfing were from there)

@@thomasvinsen1410 thanks Thomas - I'll make an effort this summer - I'll start with some snorklin' mebbe spear-fishing. I still have a board... just the locals SUCk these days near me (Kallaroo) - something killed all the surf spots since i was away in QLD.... I'd have to go down to margarates or up north to find real waves...

5:35 tune epic...
What is the name of this epic tune at 4:47 ?
Yeewwwww!!!
what’s the theme song in the beginning of every no contest video
“Men in gray suits” that’s the sharks house! Watching these guys drop on that slab, yeaaa I don’t even surf lol they make it look too easy.
The ‘up’ in West Oz town/place names refers to being close to water. It comes from the language of the Noongar people who are the traditional inhabitants of Western Australia. I grew up in the suburb of Karrinyup, right next to Gwelup.... which is a long way from Gidgegannup-fair dinkum!
@DaveWhoa

no, the -up suffix means "place of" ... there's a misconception about "near water" because so many towns are close to water, but this is explained here: The suffix originated in a dialect of Noongar, an Indigenous Australian language, in which "-up" means "place of". The suffix "-in" or "-ing" has a similar meaning in a related dialect of Noongar. Places tended to be named after their distinctive features, whereby the place names could be used to create a "mental map" allowing Indigenous Australians to determine where water, food and other raw materials could be found. These sites were often located near sources of fresh water, leading to the common misconception that "up" and "in" mean "near water".

here's some examples showing why "near water" doesn't work: Boyanup - place of quartz Boyup - place of smoke Cookernup - place of swamp hen Cooloongup - place of children Dwellingup - place of nearby water Gidgegannup - place where spears are mad (Gidgie is the word for spear) Jandabup - place of little eagle Joondalup - place of whiteness or glistening Kuringup - place of wattle gum
