Local Life in IN KUCHING, Sarawak, Borneo | Malaysia 🇲🇾
Hey guys,
Today we're living like locals in Kuching, Sarawak - Malaysian Borneo.
1st on the agenda was renting a scooter for a couple of days because we really weren't keen on having a repeat of the Siniawan night market experience (getting stuck in the middle of nowhere - Video in our Malaysia Playlist).
Then it was time for coffee... we walked around for about 30 minutes trying to find somewhere with decent coffee, We finally found somewhere & had a chat with a lovely Kuching local man.
After that, we went to the Malaysia China Friendship Park.
Finish off by eating some Sarawak food - Traditional Kolo Mee, which is basically dry noodles.
Come for a ride around the local side of Kuching with us.

The clear soup is sup kosong, literally empty soup. Historically, people didn't drink as many beverages as Western people, and soup was a way to wash things down. You can usually get free sup kosong with many foods if you ask. My grandparents often didnt order any drink, just use the sup kosong. My father will order a coffee but still asks for the sup kosong with everything. Also, you should really get the "merah" kolo mee. Merah means red, and it has more flavor; the noodles have a slightly red color because they use the same sauce they flavor the char siew (BBQ pork) with. Also the noodles are not maggie, good shops use locally made. They should be more springy and have better texture than factory made maggi mee.

Alrighty. We really appreciate the insight into the foods and the processes of eating them from you. Thanks a bunch 🙏
Borneo looking very clean place by watching your vlog. The roads are very clean and wide and the house are nicely placed on the street. Its always comparison between country's you visit and see how they differ. That's a good business that guy has renting out the bikes and cars, and it's cheap for the day, and you are not resisted to your journey when you have your own transport. Your chop stick skills are 100% better than mine .I get frustrated using chop stick and have to have a fork and spoon to have my food😢. Very nice place overall and it makes a change when you meet nice people and they like to interact with you.👌👏👍👍🙏🙏
Can always request for fork n spoon if u uncomfortable with chopsticks. If u don’t want yr drinks less sugar or no sugar just info them. Enjoy yr trip in Kuching. Hope u still around for Gawai festival(1/6)
Glad to know you enjoyed Kuching food, kolo mee usually serve with slices of fresh chilies add some brown vinegar sauce. Should have try dip the chicken meat and noodle with it, let's be food adventurous. Kolo means Mix, Mee is Noodle, so it is 'Mix Noodle'. There are dry version and wet version too. Dry type comes together with a small bowl of plain soup, and the wet version is the noodle bowl filled with chicken soup. Red colour kolo mee is the sweet savory version, dark brown colour kolo mee is tasty soy sauce version, and the common type is the original noodle colour.
You have made the right decision to rent a motorbike to see downtown Kuching because Kuching is huge

Yes definitely, we loved seeing the more local side of Kuching! It’s a wonderful place! 🥰
If the food is too dry, you can always pour some amount of soup on it to make them less "sticky" to each other...Always try to mix your food/drinks, you don't really eat them as they are...they usually need to be mix with some sauces ....and you don't need to mix ALL the sauce (chill/sambal paste..etc), like "nasi lemak", nor eat ALL of them...Most foreigners just chow down everything that are given on their plate/bowl...Not compulsory in Msia. Friendly advise on taking pictures inside cultural worship places/idols....ask permission(although not in this content). Regardless where/what country...always be aware of your surrounding, stay safe especially night travels. Enjoy you trips.

Thank you for the top tips!!
The chili with clear sauce is chili with white vinegar. Kolok mee have 2 types, white and red one. White one are usually mixed with pork lard and the Red kolok mee are mixed with charsiew oil

I’m having an Ice Chocolate - good morning - Glad you can ride 🏍️ around there with no traffic hassles - the food variety in Malaysia looks good . Interesting that Franc said “ soup had no flavour “ - all the Pho that I’ve had has been very bland 🤣👍👋🙏🤩✌️- Thanks have a great day

Thanks any! Enjoy your ice choccy! Yeah Malaysia felt like one of the safest places to ride around (at least Kuching). There is a lot of variety in the food there due to so many different cultures being there… some is good, some not so good haha. Interesting that the pho you’ve had has been bland, lots of people absolutely froth on pho. We will have to try it when we go to Vietnam. Thanks a bunch & you too. 😊😊🤩
Hope that you guys had enjoyed your time with your exploration in the city and the street food in Kuching.

@@francandsarah Wonderful. 😀
15:30 The "tasteless" soup is normal. Some have more flavour, others not so. My other half joked that the only hint of contribution by any animal in the making of the soup is probably the fart of a gnat. We also call it mosquito soup. 😂 And, no... food seller did not make different soup for different people (different for foreigners, different for locals... every customer gets the same soup accompanying their food).

Oh okay! That’s good to know. I wasn’t sure as I know in Thailand they can alter dishes without request just because they’re being served to Farang. Didn’t quite catch the fart scent, but maybe on a second taste I’ll be able to decipher that unique flavour 😂 Thank you for the information! Appreciate the insight 🙏🙏
Nice tour - motorbike definately the way to go

For sure, we had a great time with the motorbike! Nice to see some more local areas & food!
Here's a friendly tip, the next time you have kolo mee, you gotta "toss" the kolo mee and its ingredients around to mix in all the flavors. And some may prefer to order kolo mee in red aka with lard, it may taste better than the normal ones. :)

Kuching City is huge. Things are happening some where away from the CBD where the water front is located. Take a ride away from the CBD and there's where the hustle bustle are after work.

Thank you! We loved Kuching city, it was great to explore on the motorbike a bit. ❤️🙌🏽
you should try red kolo mee. The good ones are at Siang Siang coffee shop Ah Ping Kolo Mee just across the street where you guys had. Try the famous Sarawak Laksa approved by Anthony Bourdain at Choon Hui Cafe. Need to be there early as they are closed before lunch time. The the Chicken Rice too. Happy holidays.

I like Kuching too. Very nice city with good neighborhood area. local food is at everywhere you go with so many choices. 😋 i think the bland soup is also for you to pour a little bit to the noodles so it will not too dry when u eat it. Some people like their noodles a little bit soupy.

We adore Kuching. It’s got such a good small town vibe & we love all the street art. The local food is awesome & so many friendly people there. Definitely, good point about the soup. We didn’t really think about pouring it on then noodles hahaha. 😂😂
that soup is just a addition to the dry food,so its not flavorful.usually on nasi ayam, mee kolok or any other main food. for the stew or main soup maybe try order something like "sup daging(beef) /sup ayam(ayam)/sup campur(mix)" which is another separate dish that eat with rice.

The white man is making the same mistake all over again. Please mix the kolo mee properly. Use the chopsticks to bring the noodles on the base of bowl to the top. By doing so the noodles is well mixed with the lard which gives flavour to the noodles.
