Bill Forsyth, the director is a great Scottish filmmaker. I’m 54 now and had seen his other two films, That Sinking Feeling and Gregory’s Girl when they were released in America. The latter was a profound movie for me in my early teens in the early 80s. It truly captures the innocence and awkwardness of adolescence. And much like that film, Local Hero captures the desire to belong and be accepted for who you are as an adult. Bill Forsyth is a master of capturing the human condition. Thanks for reviewing!

So, you drive west from Fort William on the winding road to Mallaig. You stop at any point along the stretch of Camusdarach beach. There's Mac, Burt and the mermaid (you forgot to mention that metaphor). Thank you. As a now 62 year old who saw this in the theatre on release, I completely agree with your sentiments. I also live / work in the city. My city is a 4 hour drive from Camusdarach. Lucky me.

Thank you for reminding me of this lovely movie. I saw it a couple of times when it first came out, and I loved it, but haven't seen it again since then. I really enjoyed your thoughtful commentary on the film and your connecting it to your life.
