I had no idea others were as affected by this movie as much as me. I'm a film NUT and this is one of only three films I've ever seen that I've rated 10 out of 10, and neither of the other two had such a profound influence on how I see life. Bill, if you're reading this, I cannot thank you enough.

I finally after 39 years got to Pennan to relive some of the scenes of one of my favourite films of all time Local Hero I wasn’t disappointed but sadly couldn’t bring my lovely girlfriend with me who tragically passed away just above 2 years ago 😢I brought her photo with me though and put it on the post box at the side of the famous Red telephone ☎️ box and took some photos.I felt her spirit with me ❤️

Love this film. Went to see it with my boyfriend, now husband, in ‘83 then went camping in all the locations. 33 years later and we watched it yesterday with our daughter and her partner. Stands the test of time. Thanks Bill Forsyth special memories.

My husband and I saw Local Hero at the pictures when it first came out, we fell in love with it. We went to Scotland in 1990 and did a Local Hero trip stating in Pennan and using the real phone box. All through the 90s my husband and I would ring the phone box from Australia! There wouldn’t be a week go by where we don’t quite something from that movie! 10 out of 10! Equal with To Kill A Mockingbird!

This is my favorite film of all time. It hasn't aged at all in 34 years. It is the sweetest adult film I have ever seen and if you have a heart and a conscience this is for you. It is such a clever, inventive, humorous, sad/sweet script. I have often wondered why in the world film makers have gone down the loud, violent, crash type of films (that, let's face it - have inspired a lot of awful crimes), when this type of story is just so wonderfully resounding in its simplicity. Wonderful.

I'm probably stating what people already know, but in addition to the village scenes in Pennan the beach scenes were filmed on the west coast of Scotland around Morar and Arisaig. All stunning locations, but I'll always remember camping close to the beach, with the setting sun behind the isle of Rhum and the sea calm and smooth....

In 1982 a few friends and I drove across the hills from Aboyne, Aberdeenshire to Banff. When we drew up into the car park there was a telephone box chained to a pick up truck !!! ?. We were told that Burt Lancaster and the film team were staying in the hotel and that the telephone box featured somehow in their new movie. They brought it home every night after shooting.

Yes, a tribute was in order, and thanks to this obvious "Local Hero" fan for arranging such a fun tribute. The film is one of my all-time favorites as well--a gorgeous, funny, quirky, deeply human, socially conscious film that remains just as relevant and moving today. The soundtrack by Mark Knopfler is also exceptional--fantastic music that blends well with scenes in the film but also stands on its own as one of the best soundtracks ever. (So get the album, if you don't have it already.)

Scotland and Pennan, tug at the heart strings, I watched this film when it came out and loved it then, I must have watched it 50 plus times and I will never get bored of it. One day, I will visit, on my motorbike, however, I won't be blasting through the village :-) Because of this film, I can now play the Local Hero, Going Home theme on guitar :-)

A beautiful movie. It creates its own world, somewhere between reality and a dream. Light as a feather and warm and gentle, and yet almost heartbreaking for some reason I can never really articulate. I first saw this film in a theatre in London. I was a university student at the time, and I saw it while on a date with the girl I was seeing, the girl who was my first true love. As Bill says in this video, I've tried to watch it since, in screenings, online, on DVD. I have yet to make it to the end again. I just find myself awash in those feelings, those memories, and I can't believe how long ago that was, how old I have gotten, how much I miss those carefree days, as well as that girl. I have a genuinely happy life, don't misunderstand, but there is something in this movie that is magical. Any artist whose work can evoke in viewers the same sweet sadness more than three decades later is truly a master. Thanks so much for this video.

Thank you for posting this it was magical to watch. Firstly Mark Kermode is a fan. Secondly how I would have loved to attended that function to watch the film in Pennan with Bill Forsyth present, wow! After a 35yr wait I finally visited Pennan for the first time last month. What a special experience as I wandered around with the soundtrack playing on my iPod. I went into the hotel for a pint and along with the film poster on display they have the actual gramophone used in the film and a somewhat faded framed local newspaper article about the shoot on display. Local Hero is my favourite film it deserves a sequel. I would love to see Mac get a call in Houston to say Gordon has left the Hotel to him and for him to return and see the Happer institute.

Great great film. Of course that which was evoked on screen was an amalgam of Pennan and a location (or two) on the west coast. So to get the full LH experience, esp the stunning half-light 'gloaming' beach scenes, you'd need to visit both places.

Top man Kermode for organising this.......but a greater accolade to Bill Forsyth, who, without fanfare and manic OTT advertising, directed a British masterpiece, a film that lingers in the mind long after 'epics' have died away.Bill imbued his film with that much-sort after quality most director can't achieve; a whimsical, simple atmosphere and charm....every scene has it, the music by Knopfler has, the lighting has it.....and Bill Forsyth has it!

Adore this movie. It reasonates with me so much because I had a year-out as a student living and working in a West Wales seaside village not unlike "Ferness" (Pennan). I didn't want to leave. The Scottish filmed scenes and narrative are of course at the core of this film, but the US scenes, especially Lancaster's psychotic therapist are brilliant. A film, not to watch, but to immerse yourself in. Thank's for the upload Llangyfelach!

Arguably the most beautiful, most profund, and most eternal film in modern cinema history. And very funny as well. Today, on June 6 2023 there is an amazing article about this film on BBC, as to how it is the first movie that speaks on the environment entirely, and centrally. I have also seen it a hundred times, and it is likely I may see it many dozens more. It also has one of the most beautiful endings in cinema history.

Fans of Local Hero should watch Rockets Galore from 1956 free on youtube. You will recognize that it is a source film for Local Hero. Similar theme and several shots are hat tips to Rockets Galore including the helecopter on the beach. Beautifully filmed in the Outer Hebrides. Rockets Galore has many of the same actors as Whisky Galore a seminal post WWII Scottish B&W film from 1948. Rockets Galore also influenced Dr. Strangelove in the character of Dr. Hamburger, the Nazi paperclip rocket scientist now working for British military. All are masterpieces.
