Local charter boat captain believes Piney Point to blame for this year's red tide

Charter boat captain Mike Goodwine says normally bad red tide doesn't come past the Skyway into Tampa Bay, and he believes what happened at Piney Point a few months ago has everything to do with it.

@Captain Blacktooth this is why we are taught biology in school. The piney point released contaminated water containing nitrogen and phosphorus. In excess these nutrients can lead to the overgrowth of algae, which can block sunlight from penetrating the water and reach beneficial plants; plants that normally take up nutrients and send it on up the food chain as you hopefully know. Toxic algae blooms and fish kills result from this nutrient dump, that our governor let happen and said would be safe. The opposite has happened is just fueling the destruction of the beautiful Floridian gulf coast, as well ass the entire gulf of mexico. You are right about red tide occuring on it's own but we cannot fuel it, or be ignorant of science for your own comfort.

This red tide is affecting the inner areas of the bay where it normally doesn’t reach and where our young gamefish are trying to grow. Piney point dumped so much nutrient pollution into the bay that it severely worsened the red tide.

How long can fish populations survive these yearly disasters? And while Piney Point has made this year’s die off worse, how is this proven? And who do you sue, if the phosphate mining company that created the pond no longer exists? I don’t know the answers. But I want answers.

When tourism and the recreational fishing & boating industry collapses in Florida it might get someone’s attention. This, coupled by the loss of property tax revenue from abandoned coastline residences will be the implosion point. Good luck. After five generations of living in Florida, we are out.

The sad thing is. This has been going on for decades. Piney Point is a drop in the bucket compared to what Cargill is doing in the Alafia river. Politicians mostly turn and look the other way, both parties, because the fix isn't easy and no one wants to put thier names on it if the fix doesn't work. Phosphate industries helped central Florida grow from nothing to where we are now, but it's time for them to relocate the refineries and stuff out to the middle of the state away from environmentally sensitive areas.

"The Department of Environmental Protection released 200 million gallons of nitrogen rich water into Tampa Bay..." This is where our tax dollars are going? What is going on? Plant and harvest beneficial seaweed, make reefs for fish, stop polluting, grow mussels! That's what I say. People are shocked when things like this happen, but we need to put in work if we want nature to help us out. It's only fair. Imagine what Florida could be with more reefs, fish and nice water.

I always thought something was pretty silly about that whole deal. Maybe I'm wrong but it seems to me that they had built to containment pond to prevent all the junk that they created by making fertilizer so it wouldn't get into the bay. Am I wrong about that? I mean I think they had all kinds of liners and protective material to prevent leakage into Tampa bay. Correct? And then when there's a potential breach of the wall of that containment pond, they said oh I know we'll just pump the water into Tampa bay. I live in Manatee county, and I think it was very strange what they did...
