LNER HST Farewell | 20th December 2019

This Video is Property of MT Productions!
2160p 4K HD!
Hello everyone, MT here with the usual trainspotting action. Now that the Intercity 125 High Speed Trains have fully withdrawn from passenger service on the East Coast Mainline, LNER and UK Railtours put together a special one-off rail tour with an HST repainted in classic Blue and Grey British Railways livery from 18th to 21st December. Each day was a different leg for the tour with the first from Edinburgh to Inverness via Aberdeen under the ‘Northern Lights’ route name, the second leg from Inverness back to Edinburgh as ‘The Highland Chieftain’, the third as ‘The Northumbrian’ from Edinburgh to Leeds via York and lastly, ‘The West Riding Limited’ from Leeds to London King’s Cross.
I arrived at York to have a full look at it as it was doing ‘The Northumbrian’ leg of the tour and it arrived and departed in spectacular style as the driver was continuously beeping the power car’s horn when he was arriving and departing from both stations and properly been doing at every station they’ve been at.
It is really sad to see these go from the ECML but if you folks are still HST lovers, you still opportunities of riding on one on the CrossCountry route, Midland Mainline and in Scotland with companies like CrossCountry and Scotrail still operate them on long distance journeys. Hope you all enjoy this and have fun.

Why am I getting all emotional again? I’m a 50 year old bloke and this is what started my fascination into everything railways. My first train set was the IC125 HST as clean and beautiful as this one so a lot of fond memories. It’s not RIP HST, they’ll live on in all our hearts forever. I gotta stop blubbering over a train for gods sake. Brilliant video, thanks for sharing.

James Hardy Pacer train 142 001 and sister have just been preserved in Shildon’s Locomotion National Railway Museum on Wednesday or Thursday of this week (week commencing 16/12/2019). So if they’ll preserve a crappy Pacer then I think it’s a dead cert that this fine beast (the worlds fastest railway Diesel engine) will definitely be preserved. Must say tho that if one was to ever visit the North Yorkshire Moors railway from Grosmont to Pickering then that would be an unbelievably awesome sight.

The Azumas are nice looking but the carriage interior (in standard class anyway) is awful imo. Seats a uncomfortable and I’m definitely NOT a fan of the LED lighting. The 125 group, who restored the prototype power car, are getting 2 HST power cars donated to them from Porterbrook in 2020. Although these were built in 1976 and then entered service in 1978. They have done really well and I think that its impressive that they have had a good career of 43 years of service including 41 years of public service on the ECML. I hope that Hornby will do a limited edition model of this train in their 2020 range. Now here we are all weeping over a 125. A true icon. I lived by the ECML for many years and can't quite believe i will never see one again in normal service. Did love the Valenta. Lets hope several are preserved. Would love to see this set on a joint tour with Deltic 9 or 19 with the restored Mk 2 aircons. Imagine them side by side on the buffers in the Cross. Rick M

On Fridays, would be the return to my family in Ickenham, via GWR IC125 Service. In all of the trains I have ridden all over the world (side benefit from being stationed wherever the USN sent you), these were my very favorite. Fair Thee Well Class 43’s - the UK’s vast railways have seen yet another brilliant example of what works, fade into history. I just hope some of these sets will find a home as a historical train set in due time. Cheers from Virginia Beach, VA.

Great video, but quite saddening. Certainly brought a tear to my eye! I hated them when they displaced my beloved Deltics, but I came to admire them over years since then. The IC125’s have certainly earned their place in Britains rich railway history, just like the Deltic’s, 40’s, A4’s, and A3’s before them. But just how sad and ironic is it that they have been replaced by Japanese designed units, which certainly wont last 40+ years. Such is progress, I guess. I must say that the paint job on this looks absolutely superb - a real credit to the team that did the work. We can only hope that this complete unit is preserved (The 125 Group?) or kept on the main line (Locomotive Services maybe?)

Pleasant journey overall, had no complaints considering I managed to upgrade to First Class for 52 pence more! I can see it might be difficult for people with limited mobility to get on & off due to the height of carriage doors above the platforms though.

Azuma trains parts were manufactured on Japan (based on shinkansen technology) are built here in the UK... At Newton Abbott. They are longer with a lot of seats. Some table, some airline seats. Windows are decent size with pull down shades with coat hangers. Seats are spacious. But because of new fire safety regulation the seats are not as comfortable. They are not horrible to sit on, but they are not big comfy bucket seats. Overall, The trains are really good. But yes, I will miss the HST a lot.

R S They are built in Newton Aycliffe bear Darlington in North East England too. I think (and please correct me if I’m wrong) but Azuma’s are built in Newton Aycliffe. The name Azuma is Japanese for East. The GWR ones are built in Newton Abbott and quite possibly other operators versions too.

@@smogmonster1876 yes you are probably right. They are definitely built and maintained here in the UK, at multiple locations. Only the parts are manufactured in Japan. Azuma is Japanese for east. But they are also known as Nova 1 and IEP. And I must say they are very good trains. @Bradley McMullan. They definitely are not "utter junk".

R S Thanks for the reply RS. I couldn’t remember what the others were called. Nova and IEP. Thanks for that. Yes they are good trains and anything new in Northern England is very welcome as the North is years behind the rest of Britain in terms of investment. I’m just not keen on the interior of the standard class carriages. Other than that they are superb machines and look stunning in their LNER, Nova and GWR liveries.

Peter Swift did us proud. I know him personally as a retired member of the HST Design Team responsible for the original of what this unit depicts as it probably still features the modernised interior and of course the Paxman Valentas have been replaced. Wonderful even if first the Great Western then this makes me feel 50 for the first time! At least Abelio on the London S P to Derby / Nottingham and Sheffield have a dispensation order on their units which have a couple more years of life to go before replacement in 2022.

@@markjones4704 When built these trains were powered by Valenta diesel engines built by Paxman of Colchester. Its funny how I can remember these whizzing along at over 1oo mph when I was growing up as a kid in the 80's but they still look like modern trains. Its also funny in that although the Virgin Pendolino trains can do 140 mph there still restricted to 125 mph due to the track so technology hasn't really advanced much.
