Llangollen Canal Fishing At Chain Bridge

If you like this and my other videos, please consider subscribing.
I've had to change video editor at short notice and am coming to terms with this new one, so apologies for any odd bits within the footage ie, jumping....................................Just after first light on Sunday 27th August '17, I decided to try and fish for the first time, this section of the Llangollen Canal, at its source and for the first half mile or so.
Because it is fed by the River Dee near the village of Llantysilio, it flows and must be treated as a slow moving river or stream. That water movement means the main fish species in the first 10 miles of the 46 mile long canal are Dace, the species I catch most whenever visiting this canal to fish.
However, on this occasion, I caught only Roach and for this stretch of water, a single quality Perch.

I fished this spot on the day of Charles + Di's wedding when it was lovely and quiet. Only caught eels that day but over the years I have caught roach, perch, pike, bream, ruffe, minnows, dace, gudgeon, grayling and trout in the wonderful clear waters of this stretch of canal.

There are some quite large trout in the canal and grayling. There is a grill to stop canal fish entering the Dee and vice versa, but it doesn't stop eyed ova coming into the canal. Once in, they grow up well if they survive the first year or so. In this vid' where I hook the perch, a couple of years ago while walking past, I spotted a brown trout there just swimming casually upstream, just sub-surface. It was easily 5Ib. A regular I know of fishing by Sun Trevor hooked a small grayling last year in 2017...............................Cheers :)

Thanks for the kind comment. There are some huge pike circa 20-25Ib in the canal despite its shallowness. :) Hope to do a piking vid or two this coming winter.

I walked that hill area a couple of years ago. Started in Carrog, over the top. Walked the Bryneglwys side of the hills then cut over to by the pub in Rhewl, then to Llantysilio Church and along the canal. A good 10 miler. Yes, not tried that part of the canal before, but the fish were there - strangely, no Dace. The Perch was the largest I've ever caught in the canal between source and Trevor Basin, though earlier this year, I saw two huge ones, easily 3Ib each within a massive shoal of Dace and Roach, by the Marina. :)

The hotel has had a fair bit of work done on it over the last couple of years and the Chain Bridge over the river is now re-opened. :)

Hi. Thanks for posting. I tend the fish the last 6 miles of the canal from its source described here in the vid' down to Trevor Basin by the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct. It is free fishing. I tend within that stretch to fish mostly in and around Llangollen itself. The last two miles from the marina in Llangollen to the source is closed to motorised boats though in the late spring to late Autumn, horse drawn boats use this stretch. The water here is shallow - as little as 2ft to patches of 3.5 ft or so, but a lot of useful weed growth. Further downstream (and the canal flows) from the marina, there is little weed growth due to concrete bottom and many boats. The boats however do not disrupt the quality of fishing and in Summer, anyone can net 20Ib of dace and roach. There are a few small bream, ruffe, perch (odd ones to 3Ib), eels and odd chub. In the weedy section I mention, there are pike to 10Ib and a few 20Ibers knocking about in and around the marina. When the boat traffic reduces in winter, the pike spread out and can be found almost anywhere, so too larger perch. Sweetcorn will pick up some stuff but I find worm best, though everyone has their preferences and maggot will pull fish and light feeding with caster. I'm a livebait fan when I dabble for pike. The fish are nearly always clean and scale perfect. I've yet to land anything with parasites attached. Give it a go mate. But beware. The towpath gets busy at weekends and you'll be pestered by people asking what you've caught! You know the type! ;) Tight lines.
