Here’s little about me!
My name is Meghan Arriola and I live in Texas with my husband Jaime, where I dedicate my time to taking care of exotic and domesticated animals on my farm. We run a rescue and sanctuary for animals like alpacas, birds and reptiles. I do animal education presentations for groups and schools. Our alpacas also do events where we are able to teach people about these unique animals. I have used service dogs for medical needs for over 10 years and I am an advocate for assistance animals and mental health awareness.
I am an animal educator that brings science related ideas to an audience from around the world by presenting fun and interesting topics in a family friendly way. Animals touch our lives in unique ways everyday as simply being our pets and companions, but how can we make their lives equally as special now that they live in captivity? My KZread channel and blog explore ways to meet this goal by tackling things like animal behavior, human-animal relationships and veterinary medicine. Animal science is a great way to teach people of all ages that education is fun and nerdy is cool.
My previous animal related work experience includes working in veterinary clinics, private zoos, training horses and volunteer work in wildlife rehabilitation, rescue/foster/adoption programs and therapeutic horsemanship for children with disabilities.
When I am not working with animals, I am working at the health care clinic owned by my husband Jaime and I, where we provide services to low income, minority neighborhoods. We have been on the frontlines fighting covid19. I also have a passion for art and I am an award winning painter and photographer and published author. I am naturally very introverted but I am extroverted about sharing my passions and doing my part to make the world a better place!

I know it's probably a lot of work on top of the space needed, money, etc. But man, owning llamas seems like the dream. Maybe when I retire haha.

I watched a documentary featuring guanacos, wild relatives of llamas, and they’re pretty damn formidable. This one guanaco REFUSED to let a cougar kill it constantly bucking it off its back! My uncle used to have a llama to guard his livestock. He did a very good job I heard keeping cougars and dogs at bay.

@@jacquelineconquest6218 I'm not a llama owner but I would imagine they could at least scare off bobcats. And a decently big llama would probably be a match for a cougar.

Well they are cheaper and give you money back when compared to a pyrenees basque shepherd dog, and cheaper too! That being said if you want a dog the Basque pyrenees is the best by far

What fencing is not enough for llamas ?
Would 1 llama and 3 male alpacas work ? And should all 4 males be gelded?
I'm interested in getting a Llama but I have black walnut trees and an oak tree in my yard, is this cause for concern?
Do you know stuff about degus ?
My husband and I are looking to homestead but we live in Northern Minnesota... Our predators are more like wolves, coyotes, foxes and sometimes even mountain lions. Obviously guard animals can only do so much but would you still recommend a llama in this situation? I've also looked into donkeys as guardians, and I'm just trying to figure out which is better for larger predators.

If I were you I would have llamas and dogs. I made a video for pros and cons of all three, donkeys I don't really like because they can't be in the same pasture as the livestock.

Hi Meghan, Ok, so I got confused. I thought that because llamas and Alpacas are in the same family -- they were both guard animals for cattle. Clearly llamas are different in this case. So to clarify -- llamas can be mixed with Longhorn -- but alpacas cannot. Is that correct? Also, what roaming space do llamas require vs alpaca? Sorry for the confusion.

One more time :). I am about to buy 3 llama from a breeder. I was wondering if its safe to buy 2 x gelded males and mix with 1 female?

Are lamas all domesticated, no wild lamas.
do alpacas work as companions for llamas or does it have to specifically be another llama?

the Spanish word "llamas" and the word for the animal I don't think are related I remember this very vividly from high school since I thought Como te llamas was pronounced with the L instead of the Y. lol

Minor note on pronunciation: The double "ll" sound was originaly a palatalized "l" (meaning, close to how it is pronounced in the U.S. today), and over time, after the Conquest, migrated to the modern pronunciation (in Mexico, at least) of "y". (For the curious, this wasn't the only sound shift - "x" as in "Mexico" is pronounced today like "meh-HEE-ko", but was originally "meh-SHEE-ko".)
That 4 people sheering looks horrible. Besides that I loved the video.

"Llama" isn't a Spanish word, it is from Quechua, so there's no reason to think it should be pronunced "Yama"... since Quechua is not Spanish.
