Lizzo and the Big Girls: A History of Fatphobia in The Music Industry - The popularity of Lizzo in mainstream music has led to discussions about how plus-sized artists are treated in the music industry. To understand why Lizzo's rise to fame is important, we need to look at how plus-sized artists, especially women, have been treated over the past few decades. This video is not meant to cover all instances of fatphobia in mainstream music but rather focus on the historical treatment of plus-sized artists and the different types of discrimination they've faced.

Lisa Fischer deserves all the flowers. I had the privilege of seeing her live, center, 4th row. Her voice is not of this universe!

It’s funny cause people say “we need more Black Pop Artists” but they don’t want Lizzo to thrive in that lane because they’re not able to sexualized and commodify her like a Beyonce or Rihanna because of their fatphobia. Great Video. Keep up the good work. ❤ Was wondering if you could do a video on Homophobia within the music Industry and how its effects queer artists like Lil Nas X or Saucy Santana and Sam Smith. So many many gay and or bisexual artists like Luther Vanddrose and Whiteney Huston had to hide or be ambiguous, or gender neutral in their music for them to be palatable to the mainstream. 😏

Do they really want more Black Pop Artist? I think they don’t even know what it takes to be a Black Pop artist and the day they learn that it’s to cater to a mainstream Audience (Aka None-Black), then they might stop saying it. And they need to learn that it’s not always gonna be like Beyoncé level. But they ain’t ready for that. I love Lizzo so much! She’s so iconic!

@@bmwjourdandunngoddess6024 exactly to me Lizzo is like the black version of a Katy Perry you know, a pop artist who makes very self empowerment main stream radio friendly music. But it’s almost like because she’s fat and black. She supposed to be singing slowed down R&B songs about how these niggas and shit. And that’s just not the land that she wants to be in. She wants to be a popstar and she has every right to be that 🤗

I don’t necessarily believe ghost singing was on the rise in the 80s. It was always a part of Hollywood. Marni Nixon is one example, she was the ghost singer for Natalie Wood and Audrey Hepburn in the 50s and 60s. I know that’s not the point of the video but I just wanted to point that out.

let's talk about how if they lose weight we ask if they can still sing... as if ther talent is because of their sizee and not something they worked to cultivate

Growing up in the U.K. they always broadcast old TOTPs from the 70s and 80s and I would watch with my parents and bond with them over music from their youth. I remember thinking how ordinary looking the performers were…you didn’t have to look like the height of desirability and that surprised me - that and some of the stage costumes 😂 Growing up my favourite music videos were by Missy Elliott. If she was dropping a new music video I wanted to be at home in front of the TV to see it! I think her size helped her think outside the box and create some of the most creative and entertaining music videos of the 00s decade. Her size wasn’t a hindrance at all.

I will NEVER understand how Britney Spears was EVER called fat. It's quite sad that we have NORMALIZED eating disorders. Even Whitney Huston said "Oh well when I'm upset I DON'T eat." Umm eating your feelings or NOT eating due to sadness are BOTH BAD. We need to have a HEALTHY relationship with food. Not too much and not too little. That being said it's someone's personal choice. It's the shaming that bothers me. Brit was fat in that performance? WHERE? She had a flat belly. Am I crazy!? Most women would KILL to look like that! WOW. Shows just how SICK the music industry is. I don't give a eff about appearance. This is MUSIC, sound people. Why they gotta LOOK a certain way!? By the way this focused on women they did it with men too. But anyways. Anytime I see a pretty face I ASSUME she/he can't sing. Bring back people who can sing. I don't care about looks!!!!

Ghost singing is a clever way of saying someone is using another person’s vocals without sounding like their actual selves lmao.

When it comes to Lizzo, it has less to do with "Fatphobia" and more do to do with her attitude and personality overall. Especially with the recent allegations against her by former backup dancers who are claiming "she" was being Fatphobic against them

"Fatphobia", if its even a thing, is a reasonable phobia then...its the natural rejection of something nobody wants and needs and thats obesity. NOTHING about it is any good and Lizzo would get like 50% less jokes made about her, if she wouldnt be so obnoxious with her overcompensating attitude and insisting shes perfect, while also crying about all kinds of stuff. Her issues are oozing from her but yeah....shes "the beauty standard" as she claims. Delusion is strong with this one.
