Living With a New 2020 Toyota Corolla | The Good & Bad

After spending a week with the 2020 Corolla...these are my Likes and dislikes! Overall, I like the car and think it’s a nice improvement over the last generation Corolla sedan but still think Toyota cheaper out on a few things and made it a little less practical. The 2020 Toyota Corolla is still worth a look for an efficient but nice driving compact car!

It should be noted that the hatch and sedan offer different options as well, which is semi frustrating if you ask me. My 2019 Corolla hatch has dual zone climate control, which I love, but the sunroof which you can get on the sedan, is not even available on the hatch.. A real frustration for me. My hatch is built in Japan and has no rattles whatsoever. Might be a difference. Love this new generation overall!

I saw that the European Corolla also has rear-seat vents, a hybrid in the hatchback, and of course an available wagon. Another odd thing about the US Corolla is that parts of TSS 2.0 are only available with the CVT. Lane Tracing Assist comes to mind. This review is the first one I've heard talking about squeaks and rattles. I'll have to keep an eye out for that on my manual SE...though, like @Craig Chevaller, mine is made in Japan. I specifically looked for one that had a VIN starting with 'J'.

I have the Corolla sedan, CVT 2.0 engine for about a month now, and I agreed with almost every negative and positive you mentioned. The interior storage is quite poor, I can only manage to have a small facial tissue box in the central arm rest compartment and nothing else. There is no place for coins and other small items. I haven't experienced with any rattles or squeak yet, mine was built in Japan. I also think the lighting for the tachometer is not bright enough at night even as highest setting, mine is an entry level so it doesn't have 7 inches cluster like yours. Mine is also noisy when driven on poor unsealed surface road but I hope that is because the OEM cheap bridgestone ecpia ep150 tyres for the Australian market. I hope it will improve when I change the different tyres brand later on. I like your review, it's honest and well detailed as an everyday driver 's perspective. Thank you.

Funny thing about the storage. On the base model Corolla that wireless charging pad with the heated seat controls isn't there and is actually a pretty large and deep cubby that works really well for putting random stuff in. Also, for the B-pillar rattle, I'm almost 90% sure it's the mechanism that lets you move the seatbelt up and down. Last long road trip I took I balled up some paper from a fast food straw, shoved it below the button and that seemed to work as a temporary fix.

I like the wheels (but not low profile tires). I HATE the huge gaping grille. I agree that heated seats should be a stand alone option on all trims. However, I think they can be added on by simply buying the heaters and dash switch and getting them installed for about the same price as they would have cost as a stand alone option. Comfort is a definite concern. That said, I would want something with more cargo space like a small SUV but I don't want AWD. As for road noise and the comparison to Elantra and Mazda 3, I have to wonder what brand tires they each had. Most road noise is attributable to the tires more than the actual vehicle in my opinion.

I think the best part of the Corolla that I liked was the stereo that comes with a sub! You don't want to know how many cars I've had to add a sub. But after having seen a review of the 2019 Camry XLE last night (have you reviewed that one yet?), I must admit It was very impressive! For $34,000 you get a pano roof & 19 inch wheels. I think for the resale value alone the Camry would be my preference along with the more powerful 203HP engine & it being longer & wider no doubt translate into superior handling & comfort!

Toyota has no ‘old school’ designers, engineers, or other people, any more. They must been disrespected by the Gen-Xers who think they know more. Dare we say ‘age’ discrimination? But occurs as “we don’t need your services anymore.” And look at the stupid use of low profile tires. That’s why it’s so bumpy and noisy in the interior. Stupidity in favor of ugly looks. Especially those horrible Whale Mouth front grill designs Toyota seems to be favoring. Down right Stupid looking, as well. If it’s designed in California, one of the most over-priced, and taxed states in America. California based companies have to overcharge for their products, or else the workers will have to live on the street with the epidemic of homeless people. But what do us poor and destitute old people know. “...We don’t need your opinion...”

Also, low profile tires can't handle potholes! I live in Ohio, which gets full of potholes during the winter, some of which are deep, rim-destroying craters. If it's raining or at night, you can't see the potholes. I would never buy a car with low profile tires. I wouldn't want to be stranded on the side of the road in the freezing cold because a pothole destroyed the rims.

hamsterama ... YEP... good point! I don’t mean to be Biased necessarily, against the Gen-Xers, but why are Car manufactures placating the youth with so-called ‘features’ which are not only UGLY, but BAD from an ENGINEERING standpoint, exactly to your low-profile tires incompatibility with ‘potholes’ comment??? What’s worse, look at the new Toyota Supra!! (Now granted, most ‘normally financed’ people will never even think about buying a Supra or any other car that expensive). But why take any Toyota vehicle, with the Toyota name which has come to mean ‘quality’ and verified-by-near-Court-of-Law-level evidence to be, over decades, the cheapest vehicle to own, in terms of maintainability in the United States and other countries; BUT THEN turn around and stick a BMW engine under the hood, when BWW is provably at the complete opposite side of the list and is Dead Last as the Most Expensive vehicle to maintain in the U.S. over a surveyed Ten Year period???!!!! (same survey referenced above...) What an outright INSULT to the years and years of Legacy Toyota Owners!!! Is this the slow and purposed dismantling of the Quality Reputation of the BRAND Toyota, by misguided youth who do not have their heads screwed on straight??

@@F14Defense I personally don't think of the Supra as a "ding" to Toyota's reputation. I couldn't afford it anyway (its $50,000 cost is about equal to a year's worth of my take-home pay). But, I can see why Toyota left most of the development to a different company. Sports cars were big in the 90's, but not now. Now, customers are big into SUV's and CUV's. It wouldn't make sense for Toyota to dump big development dollars into a halo car like the Supra, when they can sell zillions of RAV4's and get more bang for their development buck. But yeah, it's too bad Toyota teamed up with BMW. I'm sure there's a perfectly good Lexus engine Toyota could have used instead.

Car & Driver has a good written article comparing 5 manual transmission hatchbacks. The Corolla got 5th place, however it might be the most reliable. The Civic was first but had some negatives. The Mazda 3 was second, with the most comfort and best looks, but it sucked more for fast driving. A Volkswagen was fourth and a Hyundai Elantra third. The turbo Hyundai was the fastest and came with the stickiest tires, and has the longest warranty.

I had a 2020 Corolla rental car for a few days while on vacation. I drove it in a variety of conditions. City, interstate, and rural mountainous highways. Overall, it's a pleasant driving car. However, it doesn't hold a candle to my 2018 Elantra that I owned at the time. In comparison, the Corolla interior design is not thought out well at all. The armrest storage is small by comparison and there was no good place for me to lay my phone. The dish behind the shifter was too small and awkward to reach. The USB port to connect my phone was inside the armrest storage, which was dumb. My Elantra had a larger storage compartment in the same location, but it was larger, much deeper, easier to reach, and contained the USB port, It also had a lid to close and hide it away when not in use. In the Corolla, I disliked how all of the dash buttons were so tiny with a small font that was harder to read compared to large, well-labeled buttons in the Elantra. The driving dynamics in comparson to my Elantra were also very numb and disconnected. It's definitely not a car for people who enjoy driving and being engaged behind the wheel. The ride was super floaty and weird. I also wasn't impressed with the overall build quality. Things fit together tightly, but everything just looks and felt a class below my Elantra inside. The doors sounded cheap and hollow shutting them, for example. The hype just didn't live up to my expectations as an Elantra owner. When we got back from our trim and into the Elantra, I felt like I was getting into a more premium car.

Mario Ulmer thanks for writing in! The thing with dual zone...the hatchback offers it which is puzzling and every other vehicle in class seems to as well. Storage is objectively less that competitors too. I take decibel ratings with each press car at same speeds over same road surfaces and this registered louder in every test which disappointed me. Overall though I like the car and still think it’ll be a rock solid car like old Corollas! I hope you enjoy your SE, thanks for stopping by!

Not sure how in the US, but in Europe Corolla offers RCTA (rear traffic alert system) in higher trims or in the package, same with interior mirror auto dimming. Also we have dual automatic A/C for all trims for hybrid vehicles as a standard and heated seats are as standard for two upper trims, while they are optional for lower two trims.

I drive a 19 corolla hatchback. The phone dock area is more of a cupped area that holds meal prep dish for snacks perfectly. But the center console area is small, really small. I have trouble with the auto ac/heat only working with feet if the car is in gear when changes are made. I dont like the smaller hatch (used to second generation matrix). Is there not a way to listen to radio without engaging the engine? I noticed in the first few hundred miles it would nearly stall at stops. Seems to have gone away. Wonder if that was part of the ecu learning how much fuel to provide. I really like the seats, huge improvement over 2012 matrix. Same with sound. I dont use the safety features but I can see them being super useful if I pass this on to a kid. My mpg has been higher than listed. At 60ish mph I can get 52mph.
