THE BASICS:
Year: 2020
Make: Toyota
Model: Corolla
Trim: LE (7 models this year, with the LE being the second to lowest trim level)
Color: Black Sand Pearl and All Black Fabric interior
Type: compact car
Starting MSRP: at $20,050
HISTORY/BACKGROUND
+ Introduced in 1966.
+ One fo the best selling cars of all time.
+ This is the twelfth generation of the Corolla.
+ Corola is Latin for small crown.
UNDER THE HOOD:
Engine: 1.8 Liter 4-cylinder engine
Transmission: Continuously Variable Transmission "with intelligence and shift mode"
Horsepower: 139 @ 6,100 rpms
MPG City: 30
MPG Highway: 38
Combined MPG: 34
Fuel Tank Capacity: 13.2 gallons
Cost for a full tank: $2.95 gallon x 13.2 gallons = $38.94
HANDLING:
Fantastic. I do drive a Toyota as my daily driver, so this car felt familiar to me. But still, it feels solid around corners at high speeds and it's super responsive at lower speeds. Parking this thing was a pleasure (especially compared to some of the larger SUVs I've been driving lately.
ACCELERATION:
Not great. For a stop, it takes the Corolla a long time to build up speed. And you never get the sensation of the car pulling you forward. It's just a slow and steady increase in speed.
But I didn't have any issues passing cars on the interstate at higher speeds and over all the car performed fine. It's not "fun" to drive.
FINAL THOUGHTS:
Great car for the price. Super reliable. Decent technology. But horrible acceleration.

The 2020s are here! I gotta say, I was super relieved to get this one. The rental car places by me don't have a ton of cars to choose from and I've pretty much rented them all at this point. So I'm happy that there's finally some new vehicles to check out. Let me know if there's a specific car you'd like me to review. I can't promise I'll get it right way. But I will try! Anyway, you're having a great day. Cheers!

Hi, I'm a little bit confused now. I got 2020 SE and I'm 5.84 feet. When I push back the driver seat to its limit, my knees touch the seat from the back seats. Do seats on the SE trim go more back than the LE? I know that the new corolla generation legroom is 17 cm less the the previous generation, that's what make me more confused about your video!

One thing you need to know about the 2020 Corolla or Toyota of that year is they have no Android Auto, but Apple CarPlay only. So keep that in mind, but if you don’t care about the GPS ad that’s the main thing you missing then it’s fine. The android phone will work on everything else, including Bluetooth, music and answering calls but other than that, that’s to be expected whereas with Apple CarPlay you can do all that while having access to Google maps or Waze.

For the same money you can get a Honda Civic, which is bigger and faster. For $4,000 less after dealer discounts ($16,500) you can get a Hyundai Elantra that gets better gas mileage and is bigger as well, with more power. The Hyundai will not have the smooth ride, however, because of the torsion beam rear axle. I would get the Civic.

Im sure I’ll get some flak for this, but you should be more critical on your reviews. Criticality is something missing from almost all reviews, because so many viewers are looking for validation of their purchase decisions and not a real review. You also have the advantage that you’re renting and not beholden to the manufacturer. I travelled a ton last year, many rental cars and most were compacts. The Corolla was the most uninspiring, boring, featureless and characterless car I rented. Given that the MSRP is close to actual advertised cost on these, you wind up paying around 3-4k more than competing Kia/Hyundai/VW in this size category. If MPG isn’t your main motivator, even cars like Dodge charger and Chrysler 300, Ford Fusion and so on come into competition. I mean really, a VW Jetta SE in my area is the same price as base Corolla and is so much more car with a 6yr/72k warranty. Can get a fusion SEL that is way nicer than a base Corolla for only ~1k more in my area. The Corolla just doesn’t compare to its competition.

The SRT writings under the video blocks my view. I can't really see what the man pointed at the front tyre. KZread need to do something about this their new upgrade. It's not helping some of we the viewers. I can hear and understand what the man is saying clearly in the video, so why are you guys still writing it under the video? It makes watching videos on KZread nowadays annoying.

I was about to buy that corolla but I went with the Camry instead. Got a 2019 Camry LE. My biggest reasons were that the Camry is a little bit higher of the ground, it’s got an automatic transmission (not ready for a cvt yet), and it’s a little bit more spacious while being relatively fuel efficient. Thought, being honest, when I get my next car probably within the next 10 years, I’ll probably go with a hybrid for sure. Hoping that the battery technology gets better and the transmissions get more reliable.

I heard the 8 speed auto in the Camry hesitates and isn't fun to drive, how has your experience been so far?

Better hope that Camry don't end up with the CVT like the Corlla did.Face it. CVT is headed your way.

Thanks! The Mitsubishi Triton, huh. I would LOVE to, but I have to honest with you, it might be a challenge. My local Mitsubishi dealer won't rent out their vehicles and none of the major rental car places have Tritons. I also can't find one on Turo by me. I'll keep looking, but right now I don't think I'm going to be able to come through for you.

Good review. Question, what does the "B" at the bottom of the transmission shift selector do.

  • @100RentalCars

    @100RentalCars

Thanks! The "B" is for engine braking. It's designed to be used on long declines to prevent your brakes from being worn out. To be honest, I've never used it.

The fact that Toyota are depowered could be a big reason why they last 400,000 miles just saying. Performance cars were out faster.
