I'm sure you don't remember me it's Julie from Australia. You are looking great as always, Finally after 14 mths in council my new house has been approved. OMG all the hurdles I had to jump through, made decorating it actually something I had to put off. You see, I started to believe it wasn't going to happen, but I still soldiered on with my DA...... I'm in a beautiful village backing onto the National Park so I had to have many specialised professionals provide their input. Like we had to hire bushfire experts, flora, koala and separately microbat specialists 😮. The microbat guy turned up looking and dressed exactly like Steve Irwin LOL...the approval process was very tiresome and worrying. But indeed we travelled to Greece Egypt (so exciting) Japan and Thailand so it was an exciting time late 2023 - have to look at the bright side 😊. SO ITS it's all systems Go!!! I'm glad to be back, I've been back watching you and catching up on all the episodes I missed. YAY!!!! it's all happening. Do you offer remote interior design and if so where should I look.

Hi, Garrett! At point 17.02, is that a lucite coffee table over the square ottoman? What a great idea. I love upholstered ottomans (ottomen?) for the warmth they add, and here the lucite adds a nice flat surface for a cup, a vase or whatever. Now my own little lucite coffee table seems 'way too small for my living room. I love this look so, of course, a square upholstered ottoman is definitely in my future -- and I have you to thank! xxoo

Thank you! I have no problem with people having rugs or carpeting. Personally, I prefer hardwood floors, marble or travertine with beautiful rug accents. The only thing I really don’t like is rugs over carpeting because as I’ve said many times before it can present trip hazards and I believe in safety first, and there are much more elevated and aesthetically pleasing ways to bring interest into a space other than putting a rug over a carpet which I’ve discussed and given examples of in previous videos as well.

My comment about rugs is that almost every designer focuses on neutral, kind of monochromatic (to me boring) rugs. I have handmade wool persian tribal and pakistani rugs which encorporate quite a few colours (a couple do have a dominant colour but not all). I love them and my style is transitional, eclectic however, it is a headache to decorate around them in order to tone them down and create a calm, harmonious environment. Could we have some pro input on that? How can we make a traditional, legacy rug work with different design styles?

😂 I love your videos and that side eye was the best!! 😂😂 I have a question…Firstly, I have the matchy matchy set, one because, I need a table next to me and the loveseat sets under the front window because my little dogs sit on the back (on a blanket) so they can see outside. My ottoman is off center because I have dog stairs for my poor guy who has arthritis 😢. Now that I’ve confessed my designing sins, 😮 what makes a sectional ok but a matching sofa and a love seat not ok? I hope this came out ok because I love you ❤️… I just wondered. 😊

  • @GarrettLeChic

    @GarrettLeChic

    2 ай бұрын

Thanks so much! I consider a sectional one piece of furniture in several parts that fit together vs a sofa and love seat for example which are two distinct pieces of furniture. I’m not necessarily against a sofa and love seat matching if everything else isn’t matchy matchy in a space. It’s just that I prefer to create and curate spaces with different pieces instead of sets of furniture which are common especially since that’s what typical furniture stores generally sell. At the end of the day, these are my opinions, but one should do what makes them happy in their home, and is safe and functional for the space. 😊

I haven’t had one in 20 years because my living room space just wouldn’t allow for one despite it being a large room, I had a pole “beam” literally in the middle of my living room, it was awful that was in my last apartment in the states since then I live in my own home pole free and can once again enjoy having a coffee table so your advice comes at the perfect time 😊

It doesn’t look bad, but now that I know, it bothers me a bit. I can’t replace it. Uff. So my coffee table is round marble I can’t change for a long one, but it looks fine.

Great advice, Garrett! Thank you! Maybe for an upcoming topic: what's the best color for appliances. Example: with medium oak (can't change it) cabinets is it slate? black? stainless? white? Now I see white with fancy gold handles, 4-section dry-erase, smooth finishes, etc. So many choices; and changing over is a big, costly decision.

Hi Garrett! It’s Lois, despite my new handle. Sage advice, as usual, thank you. I agree with you on every point, particularly the necessity of having a table near every chair. My living room is rectangular, and quite wide, with 10’ ceilings. There is a large fireplace with overmantel centred on one wall, a curved sofa opposite, a large, deep bay window at one end, and the dining room at the other. The opening from the living room to the dining room is narrowed by partial walls on either side, and an antique loveseat is centred in the opening with its finished back toward the living room. My grand piano sits in the bay window. While the shape and size of the living room invite symmetrical furniture placement (which is my taste), with a coffee table in front of the chenille sofa, matching end tables and lamps on either side, two velvet tub chairs across with nesting tables in between, and a straight-backed, upholstered chair with small side table backing onto the antique loveseat (upholstered in a linen toile), the keyboard of the grand juts into this seating area, so I cannot use a rug wide enough to allow all the legs of my end tables to sit on it. Such a dilemma! So, I chose one the same width of my sofa: 8’ x 10’. The rug is long and wide enough that my tub chairs and their nesting tables can sit on it entirely. While the end tables sit on the floor, so, too, does the piano, its bench, my music rack, the straight-backed chair and its table, and the two consoles, each flanking the fireplace. The tub chairs sit in front of the fireplace, and are placed far enough forward that the rug continues behind them, but it does not impede the path. With so much bare floor under furniture around the perimeter of the living room, the rug has created a cozy sitting and conversation space despite the generous proportions of the room - which, by the way, is blue! It must be comfortable, because nobody ever wants to leave it! Take care❤️

Thank you for giving the okay on the rug not having to be completely under all of your couch haha. My couch has to be against a wall and while I have the 8x10 completely under the couch, I have been feeling like I’d like to space out my tv and coffee table a little more and feel like it might help to pull the rug out a bit more and potentially make it feel more open? Would love to see a video on bedrooms next! I just recently bought these gorgeous Donghia zig zag side tables for my bedroom. The ones I bought are round with more of a mahogany finish, but you can see similar pieces on places like Chairish. They were such a great find and were a little out of my comfort zone, but I really liked the unique shape to them and have been trying to find ways to incorporate more of this postmodern vibe with the traditional silhouette that I love. Thanks for another great and informative video!

It's been a minute since you've done a home tour, may we have one? Your "snark" is funny A/F because we all know you value inclusivity. You're a Gem!

If I have nice wood floors, must I have a rug? how about a rug just beneath the coffee table?

Every situation is different. I can’t give a specific and intelligent answer to your particular situation unless I see the space and discuss your aesthetic and decorating objectives. I offer virtual consultations that can be booked at intro.co/garrettlechic

I put a small round rug on my wall to wall carpet because we sat on the sectional for hours and I was protecting the wall to wall from excessive wear.

I understand. It’s just still not something I recommend from an aesthetic perspective or especially a safety point because rugs over carpet often present a trip hazard.

I am guilty of not having a coffee table but I have a sectional and the place in front of it is a traffic area because the room is a small, long rectangle and I need to get to the window. I'm in a constant battle with myself about getting one or not... I wish there was a video on how to arrange/style truly small spaces. 😔 But a very helpful video as always! Can't wait for the next one.

I'm unsure about the effective use of art lights. I have a lot of art. Would I just do the biggest pieces? What about a gallery wall? 🤔

It really depends on the space and what you are trying to accomplish. Every situation is different. In videos, I’ve discussed my love of art, general opinions on lighting and how to hang art. For questions about specific situations like yours, I’d have to see the space, the art and discuss your objectives to give my opinions which I’m glad to do. If you would like please feel free to book a virtual consultation with me at intro.co/garrettlechic
