Living RENT FREE in NYC - The Van Dwellings of New York City

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

In todays video we visit with Rob as he walks us through Van Alley in Brooklyn New York. The high rent prices in New York City have been forcing many to move into self converted DIY camper vans. There are many that come and go as they find alternative living spaces other than their van dwellings. This rent free living can also be difficult as the winter months come.

I always thought he was courageous, mind you we were young and had no commitments. It takes a special person to live this life in NYC and am so glad these guys now have a community that is supportive. BTW, my friend saved lots of money by not being a slave to insane rent in the city and having worked in a lucrative industry post-9/11, invited me after the crash of 2008 to housesit his sailboat. He eventually moved to a warmer climate. Great video!

Hello I live in a different part of Brooklyn, in a skoolie, and I will say that if you are on the right street, people will just walk by and leave you alone. Once I opened my eyes to the fact of living in a home on wheels, I began to notice all the old and new RV's parked all over the city, that people are living in. Why pay $1300.00, for a room in Brooklyn, and have to share kitchen and bathroom with strangers. And I too have a cheap chinese diesel heater, and they are great.

Vandwelling can be done here in NYC. There are 2 in my neighborhood far uptown, they are quiet, discreet, clean, no problems. There is parking, but you will have to move more often, sorry to see van alley going away. For my research so far, most people that seem to make van life work are retired and not usually full-time. If you are entrepreneurial or skilled professional, if you have passive income or inherited a decent chunk, you can make it. If you are wise and don't wear out your welcome, friends and family can give you a break occasionally. A great possibility for this lifestyle is pairing it with university study- for the cost of one class per semester you have access to a cafeteria, a gym, sometimes a pool, bathrooms, a library and employment opportunities, and with a parking permit, now you don't have to move the van as often. Another possibility with van life is the potential to make it on a part-time income.

Finding parking to be undisturbed will increasingly become difficult. Even in national forest and BLM land, they're adding more restrictions. Walmarts more and more are banning overnights. Rest stops are putting up time limits for some amount of hours. A lot of used vans will probably hit the market over the next year, and it will be people who can afford rent but thought they'd save money, and realize there are too many headaches and legislation efforts to make it harder. The people who will make it work will be those who decide those headaches aren't as painful as giving away most of what they make at their job to rent: a van is depreciating, but rent is zero equity.

This is New York City. Damn near every street is restrictive to a degree. Give it time. The establishment is looking for ways to lock this down.

What you guys need to do ( if you haven't already) is to connect nationally and/or continentally with other RVers by providing an informative map on locations such as yours to help each other.

You know what?! I just retired from teaching special Ed, I can’t imagine living in a van, BUT this video made up my mind of getting rid of “shit” . We just build in the Laurentians , Quebec, Canada. So I need to get rid of stuff ….so much stuff….and why do I need the headache?? Live simply!! Thanks guys for the share. Happy Holidays and be safe!

I bought an rv camper van last year and was on the road all year during the pandemic. I keep an apt in Manhattan, barely at this point but I’m still here living rent free. I had no idea this community exists and I’m super impressed you guys can do this full time. The nypd doesn’t ever give these guys a hard time ? Given this city I’m amazed.
