The wood and molding is too dark, thick and bulky everywhere, it’s almost depressing. You would almost never see this in Europe. The exterior looks more like a high school for rich students or a bording school, more than a mansion, even though it was built with expensive materials.

One year later... I completely agree. Like the chef’s kitchen seems like a waste. It would have been nicer if they just completely restored the place to it’s original glory. There’s so very few historical masterpieces in America, modernizing it with so many unnecessary prices is a waste.

Wonderful house....but....even if I could afford to live there I wouldn't. I think of the enormous cost of paying for and maintaining so much that is non-essential when there are people who need help with medical bills and insurance premiums and paying the rent and for whom transportation is a problem; I couldn't in good conscience live in this house. I'm not saying everyone should live with the bare minimum; nothing wrong with a nice house and having and enjoying nice things. This house , fine as it is, would be too much for me.

I is simply too big, from the outside it looks like an apartment building. I really like Gilded Age mansions, and my dream mansion would be similar to a gilded age one, and i even drew up floor plans, and i got like 13-15,000 sqf. This thing is 50,000.Who the hell needs that many bedrooms and ublic rooms?i can see having 3-4 public rooms and 4-5 beds but thats the most i see practical even for the wealthiest buyer.Anything past that is waste of space

Andrew Brendan .. I totally agree with you. You would have to have a staff of at least 50 people with Cooks, Maids, gardeners, people to take care of your automobiles, pool men, grocery shoppers, party organisers, hiring a Majordomo, etc. Can you imagine all of the drama that would be created within the staff? Did you ever watch Downton Abbey on PBS? It would be the same type of thing here. There will always be someone running around and you would never get any privacy if you just wanted to be alone. It is a great house though for $48M.

@@TheLusianPopa The mansion is not that attractive for a mansion, it looks more like a wealthy school or apartment building, and the interior is dreadfully depressing with all that to dark, thick, and bulky wood everywhere. And while the mansion has a slight resemblance to large manor house in Europe they were usually more refined and elegant more of a classical influence and a lovely European influence, rather than an Americanized architecture of an English manor house that in this case, seemed to been designed not from a man with class, elegance, and good taste, but from a robber barron or robber baron wannabe, who built this huge thing, to show off his wealth to himself and maybe his guests, the enormous wealth made off of untold thousands of workers, who probably lived in cramped apartments or shacks.

@@MySensualWorld that is the way the Gilded Age elite used to decorate, they would buy up entire rooms from European chateaux in France, Italian Palazzos and English Manor houses..those buildings had huge cavernous dark rooms, very formal and intimidating... and yes it is scaled up to an American ideal/vision of country house. Even the wealthiest ppl in the world find this intimidating and off puting, not because of the square footage but because of the very formal and cavernous rooms..they are not inviting, they are just too over the top...some like it this still but darn few
