So two of these houses were where the idea for The Great Gatspy came from? I'm starting to think these scripts aren't proofread.

Such unimaginable wealth can only last a lifetime. But I can imagine our Intelligent Creator asking him why wasn't he more charitable with all that money he had. Time streaks by like lightning. Seems like yesterday I remember my mother pushing me in a baby carriage. Today, I'm 95. So, I know how fast the accounting will come.

The Modern Versailles is this and much more. It is breathtaking, and imagine yourself living in this chateau, you realize the great size. You need a staff to run this home. Yep, from cooking to a carriage ride, all is at hand. The chess set is nothing to boast about until you learn it was Napoleon Bonaparte’s. Every square inch is lovingly cared for by the staff. Well worth a visit, but allow a few say’s to cover it all. It took nearly half an hour once you enter the estates grounds to the house.

Arden house is owned by a Chinese man who lives in and is a citizen of China. He has Arden house listed as a non-profit so he pays no taxes on it! Why is this country allowing non-citizens of the US to own such lavish properties and pay no taxes?! If we did what other countries do and tax non-citizens to the max we wouldn't have this issue. We should also not allow non-citizens to have a non-profit here. That would end the problem. They can't apply for a non-profit here but they can buy them from a US citizen who has already established a non-profit and that's how they get around it. The US should also not allow that. Can you imagine the taxes on Arden house? Yet, he pays nothing in taxes and I bet that place sits empty until he wants to use it. I don't believe for one minute that it's used as either a conservation center or conference center unless the man who owns it is in the country using it. Then he can say that he's conferencing there.

The "Modern Versailles" house is a hideous, tacky monstrosity that looks like it was designed by a junior high student with a cad program (some of the interiors shown aren't even from that house). It's also on a ridiculously small lot (for such a large house). Biltmore Estate was not the Vanderbilt "family" home, but the home of George Washington Vanderbilt, his only child (daughter Cornelia), and her descendant (the Cecils). It was never the family home of the rest of the Vanderbilt family.

And Biltmore is still IN the family unlike their homes in Newport and elsewhere. The estate was built to be self-sufficient from the git-go, and they have adjusted to changing times successfully. It's an amazing house to tour, and their wine is pretty tasty!

@@oldtop4682 I've been there quite a few times. Unfortunately, I think their commercial success has had some negative impacts. Last time I was there they had a bunch of big tents set up int he Italian garden for some event. And the wine tasting room used to be in the old milking barn, and you could see the original stencilled roof trusses, but that has all been reconfigured now so you can't recognize the original dairy structures anymore. Also, the horse stables next to the house were originally left in tact, but now they have all been converted into shops.
